Kyd, Thomas
Elizabethan playwright whose Spanish Tragedy was apparently the most popular dramatic work of its time. It is a perfect example of that beloved Elizabethan form, the "revenge tragedy," which exerted a considerable influence on Gothic narrative and on the portrayals of Gothic villains. Its inclusion of a ghost doesn't hurt, either.

Early life
Thomas Kyd was the son of Francis and Anna Kyd and was baptized in the church of St Mary Woolnoth, Lombard Street, London on November 6 . The baptismal register carries the entry: "Thomas, son of Francis Kidd, Citizen and Writer of the Courte Letter of London". Francis Kyd was a scrivener and in 1580 was warden of the Scriveners' Company In October Kyd was enrolled in the newly-founded Merchant Taylors' School , whose headmaster was Richard Mulcaster . Fellow students included Edmund Spenser and Thomas Lodge . Here, Kyd received a well-rounded education, thanks to Mulcaster's progressive ideas. Apart from Latin and Greek, the curriculum included music, drama, physical education, and "good manners". There is no evidence that Kyd went on to either of the universities. He may have followed for a time his father's profession; two letters written by him are extant and his handwriting suggests the training of a scrivener.

Thomas Kyd
Created by Timothy Harris (AKA Hyde Harris) THOMAS KYD
is a Los Angeles P.I. of "high principles and low assets" who appeared in two very good private eye novels in the seventies. He's a Vietnam vet and young widower, a fallen liberal, and a guy just trying to hold on, and he does it all in a fashion that may seem familiar: At one point, Harris, who made no secret of his ambitions to follow in Chandler's footsteps, was being bandied about in the same breath as contemporaries like Greenleaf and Estleman. His second novel, Goodnight and Good-bye , is particularly recommended. But he seems to have got lost somewhere down the line, and instead went into film. He also wrote novelizations of films such as Steelyard Blues American Gigalo and Heat Wave Heat Wave 's of particular interest, because it's a pretty decent P.I. story itself, although it doesn't really have a P.I. in it. The original screenplay was by Herschel Weingrod, who became a screenwriting collaborator with Harris. Their joint efforts have produced Cheaper To Keep Her , a P.I. flick starring Mac Davis as

From the edition of 1615. Reproduced in Shakespeare's England One of the most popular plays of the whole period covered by Shakespeare's career was The Spanish Tragedy, probably by Thomas Kyd* . Kyd startles with spectacular stage devices adopted from Senecan drama:
  • There is a ghost which urges on the figure of Revenge, in a manner roughly similar to the beginning of Seneca's Thyestes, where the ghost of Tantalus and a Fury exclaim upon the horrific doom which is about to destroy Tantalus' family. . .
  • Senecan Irony?
  • There is tragic irony in abundance, particularly in the final scene where the King of Spain and the Viceroy of Portugal witness a play-within-the-play ( The Spanish Tragedy was written before A Midsummer Night's Dream or Hamlet ); the onlookers think that the acting of their nephew and son is particularly good in their deaths, but discover that the stabbings are in earnest.
  • More horrors
  • There are other Senecan horrors, the only real difference being that in Kyd's play they take place on stage rather than being reported by the nuntius ("messenger").

An introduction and list of his (2!) plays. Thomas Kyd Born in 1558, Thomas Kyd was educated at the Merchant Taylors School in London. Although the details of Kyd's life are obscure, it is known that he shared a room with another playwright, Christopher Marlowe . Not as poetic as Marlowe, Kyd's brilliance came from his understanding of the requirements of the stage and his instinctive grasp of the tragic form. Ben Jonson called him the "sporting Kyd," and it is believed that by 1589 he had written a lost Hamlet sometimes referred to as the Ur-Hamlet which was probably the model for Shakespeare's tragedy. Kyd's best known play, The Spanish Tragedy (1589), was nothing less than the most popular and influential tragedy of Elizabethan times. Inspired by the tragedies of Seneca , it tells the story of Horatio, the only son of the marshal of Spain, who falls in love with the beautiful Belimperia but is murdered by the Prince of Portugal and by Belimperia's brother Lorenzo who wants her to marry the Prince. Before she is whisked away by her brother, Belimperia manages to send Horatio's grief-stricken father a letter using her own blood for ink, and the old man soon sets out to avenge his son's death, feigning madnesslike Hamletto avoid suspicion. In its day, The Spanish Tragedy was even more popular than Shakespeare's plays, and it continued to be performed throughout the Elizabethan period.

Thomas Kyd and The Spanish Tragedy Biography Early Life . As is true in the case of Shakespeare, we do not know the exact day on which Thomas Kyd was born, but we do know that he was baptized in the Church of St. Mary Woolnoth, London, on November 6, 1558. This was eleven days before Queen Elizabeth came to the throne and some six years before the births of Christopher Marlowe and William Shakespeare, both of whom were born in 1564 (Freeman 1). Kyd’s father, Francis Kyd, was a successful scrivener. J.R. Mulryne says that he "achieved some distinction as a scrivener, serving as Warden of the Company of Scriveners in 1580" (xi). A scrivener had the duty of copying documents, especially legal documents and therefore occupied a prominent position in the legal world and was usually a person with a good education. Arthur Freeman says that scriveners "considered themselves a distinguished guild" and "maintained high educational standards among themselves" (3). Thus it is not surprising that Francis also sought to provide a good education for Thomas and in 1565, shortly before Thomas turned seven years old, enrolled him in the Merchant Taylors’ School. Education Nothing is known about Kyd specifically during his years as a student, but a great deal is known about the school he attended, and it is almost certain that he had the same type of curriculum that the school provided to its other students. It was a new school, three years younger than Thomas Kyd, but it had high admission standards, requiring that its students know the catechism in either English or Latin and that they were able to read and write before they would be admitted (Freeman 6).

THOMAS KYD This biography was originally published in Elizabethan and Stuart Plays . Ed. Charles Read Baskerville. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1934. pp. 421-422. Purchase Plays by Thomas Kyd Thomas Kyd was born in London in 1558, the son of Francis Kyd, a scrivener. He was
educated at the Merchant Tailors' School, of which Richard Mulcaster, was head master. Probably he followed his father's calling for a while, but little or nothing more is known of him until he reached his thirties. He seems to have had some acquaintance with French, Italian, Spanish, and Latin, and to have done hack work in translating and in pamphleteering. Certainly with his Spanish Tragedy at least, he had a part in the outburst of popular tragedy around 1590. It has been supposed that he afterward capitalized on the popularity of this play by writing what might be called a first part, though the extant First Part of Jeronimo (printed in 1605) is probably by another hand.
