Ellen Kushner,
Thomas the Rhymer
(Tor, 1990)
Ellen Kushner chose her narrators for the four sections of Thomas the Rhymer well. The book, based on a well-known Scottish ballad and a little bit of known history, begins from the perspective of Gavin, an old crofter who, with his wife, hosts the wandering harper Thomas in hard times. As the years pass, the Rhymer's fame as a harper grows in noble circles, but he still makes time to visit and live with the doting couple, who treat him like a far-roving son. Despite his various courtly flirtations and encounters with high-born ladies, Thomas pays suit to Elspeth, a young girl from the rural countryside who, orphaned and living with her brother, has also latched onto Gavin and his wife Meg as surrogate parents. The Rhymer's future seems secure, both in matters of his occupation and his heart, until one day he walks into the hills and doesn't return. It is here the book's perspective changes, and for the first time we see the story unfolding through the Rhymer's own eyes. Swept away by passion upon meeting the Queen of Elfland, Thomas agrees to sell seven years of his life to be her consort and minstrel. The price is his voice; while he may sing in any company, he may speak only to the queen or his freedom is forever forfeit. Thomas describes his years of captivity in tones of awe and frustration. His happiness in Elfland is never complete, his misery is never overwhelming. Instead, he exists in a sort of half-life, at times consumed by his desire to stay with his Queen and lover, while at other times he yearns for the life and people he left behind him. Through Kushner's evocative and highly detailed storytelling, we are able to fill in the gaps of the old ballad as Thomas is introduced to the wonders and weirdness of his otherworldly home. We feel his frustrations, we empathize with his fixations.

It's a melancholy trend, although perhaps inevitable, that something that should be as fresh and inventive as fantasy literature so easily becomes formulaic, to the degree that there are subcategories with many examples, all easily identifiable and few really standing out. Parked happily outside the throng is Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint , the newest edition of which also contains three related short stories, "The Swordsman Whose Name Was Not Death," "Red-Cloak" and "The Death of the Duke." Swordspoint is that most unusual fantasy, one without mages, wizards or sorcerers, no spectral visions, no medieval jousts or merry bands of thieves, no dire prophecies, goblins or dark spiritual presences. It is billed as "A Melodrama of Manners," and it is that, and more. The story is really a simple one, although there are several plot lines, all involving to one degree or another the swordsman Richard St. Vier, a true artiste of the blade with an arrogance to match, and his lover, the scholar Alec, he of the mysterious past, aristocratic bearing and uncertain sanity. The action takes place in the city (we are never given a name), in the slums of Riverside, the haunt of thieves, prostitutes, pickpockets and worse, and the high-rent district, the Hill, where the nobles live they are not really much better than those in Riverside, only more polished and, sometimes, more subtle. The story itself is engaging enough to keep us reading there are political intrigue

Who discommends:
This was a re-read. I was pleased to see that this book had been added to the list, but since I last read it over 10 years ago felt that a re-read was necessary so that I could comment meaningfully... Oh, and alright I just wanted to. First published in 1987, this was I think one of the first of the new wave of urban fantasies that are commonly labelled "Fantasy of Manners". It made a great impression on me when I first read it and I was curious to see if I would still feel the same way.
The setting is a divided city where the rich folk live on the hill and the poor live down by the river. The modes and manners are reminiscent of Georgian England but with some differences; one of the most obvious for the purpose of the story being that the aristocracy settle points of honour, not in personal duelling but via the use of surrogate swordsmen.
The narrative focusses on the career of one such swordsman, Richard St Vier, commonly reckoned the best of his age and his relationship with the mysterious ex-scholar, Alex. The story is a brightly faceted one; turning on points of honour; awash in decadance and betrayal. Questions also touch on the relationship of the central couple, giving little relief until the entirely satisfactory ending.
Re-reading I was struck afresh by Kushner's cleverness. I've read a number of SF novels which focus on a same-sex relationship, commonly the affect is alienating for the heterosexual reader. The reverse is true here; the relationship is described in terms of love, comfort and romance, not lust. I cried again when I reached the end; so happy that it had all worked out.Catie (27 Oct 99)

Welcoming Children Into The World
(RCD 10460)
First aired in 1996, Welcoming Children Into The World has become a perennial favorite among listeners and one of Ellen's most popular and requested programs. Bearing "music for and about our youngest children" that describes the universal stresses and joys of an infant, the CD reflects the radio playlist, featuring artists and songs from the program. The tracks run from Sweet Honey and Woody Guthrie to Serbo-Croatian and Nepalese lullabies, a song about adoption, a Baka nursery rhyme, a medieval Sephardic song about going through labor, a Navajo chant, and several African genres touching on various baby-related topics. 78. Ellen Kushner - Thomas Le Rimeur - Les Chroniques De La Salle 101

http://www.salle101.org/pages/chroniques-ecrites/thomaslerimeur.html

The Fall of the Kings

A book review by Elisabeth Carey
Fifteen years ago, Ellen Kushner's Swordspoint delighted appreciative readers with complex, interesting characters, a richly textured setting, and a fantasy novel with no magic at all. The Fall of the Kings admits magic into the picture, but the characters are as interesting, and the setting at least as textured and lived-in. It's sixty years later, and Alec Campion, now remembered as the Mad Duke, has been dead for twenty years. Before he died, though, he brought back from his travels a wife, Sophia, who gave birth to a son a few months after the Mad Duke's death. That posthumous son, Theron, is heir to his cousin Katherine, the Duchess Tremontaine. Theron and his mother live, not in Tremontaine House, but in Riverside House, the great house Alec built where the little house he once lived in with Richard St. Vier had stood. The Riverside neighborhood has ha d some of the edge taken off of it by the effects of the presence of a great household, and the civilizing influence of Sophia. (Sophia, not long after arriving in the city, successfully badged the University into letting her study medicine, and operates a clinic for the residents of Riverside.) It's still a rough and dangerous place, though, and naturally Theron likes it better than the Hill, where all proper young noblemen belong. He likes the University even better, especially after he meets Basil St. Cloud, a magister who teaches, and studies, ancient historythe early history of the Kings who came down from the north and ruled with wizards by their sides. Everyone knows that the wizards were charlatans and the kings were dupes and puppets. Basil wonders if everyone is right, and persists in his academically unfashionable practice of reading contemporary documents rather than just the official and unofficial histories, until he find a very dangerous book.
