the Poet and the Poem,
at Library of Congress GC: The name of the program is the Poet and the Poem from the Library of Congress. I'm Grace Cavalieri . Our guest is the tenth Poet Laureate of the United States, Stanley Kunitz, just inaugurated. He'll say hello with an opening poem. SK: Hello, I'm Stanley Kunitz. I'm going to start the interview here with the reading of a very early poem. This poem is entitled ?Vitnawova?. It's a poem of dedication. I wrote it at the age of 23 and it's the concluding poem in my first book of poems published in 1930, a long time ago. Vita Nuova I abdicate my daily self that bled,
As others breathe, for porridge it might sup.
Henceforth apocalypse will get my bread
For me. I bit my tongue and gnawed my lip,
But now the visor of my name is up.
So I will peel that vision from my brain
Of numbers wrangling in a common place

Earth was my home, but even there I was a stranger. This mineral crust. I walk like a swimmer. What titanic bombardments in those old astral wars ! I know what I know : I shall never escape from strangeness or complete my journey. Think of me as nostalgic, afraid, exalted. I am your man on the moon, a speck of megalomania, restless for the leap toward island universes pulsing beyond where the constellations set. Infinite space overwhelms the human heart, but in the middle of nowhere life inexorably calls to life. Forward my mail to Mars. What news from the Great Spiral Nebula in Andromeda and the Magellanic Clouds ? I was a stranger on earth.
Stepping on the moon, I begin

    Jerusalems

    Heat. Cold. Craters of silence.
    The Sea of Tranquillity

    And, beyond,
the intelligence of the stars. Stanley Kunitz, 1969

September 04, 2003 stanley kunitz and lucie brock-broido Last week I wrote about Louise Glück's appointment as the new poet laureate , and today in the New Yorker I found this great profile of Stanley Kunitz , her teacher and mentor. I loved this anecdote in the piece from another one of his students, Lucie Brock-Broido (who was in turn The Boy 's teacher a few years ago): Lucie Brock-Broido, another of his students and now the director of poetry at Columbia’s School of the Arts, says that “much of my adult life had to do with magical direction from Stanley from afar.” Then, ten years ago, when she applied for the position at Columbia, she was asked to compare herself to her mentor. “I was in front of a very formidable committee—the dean, and the chairs of all the divisions of the School of the Arts, the real heavy hitters. The very last question of the interview was ‘What could you possibly offer here at Columbia that, say, Stanley Kunitz could not?’ I took a moment and I said, ‘More hair.’” (Granted, Kunitz has more hair than most men in their 90s, but she's got a horse's mane!) Slate's published three Brock-Broido poems so far this year

Another poet for poetry month, another 3 poems. Stanley Kunitz is another older American poet. Born in 1905, he’s still kicking, still writing poetry. In his 99 years, he’s served as our Poet Laureate and has a wealth of honors. Not bad for a Harvard alum who was flatly told to his face he wouldn’t be back to teach there because he was Jewish. Stanley splits his time between Provincetown and NYC, where he helped found Poet’s House . It’s easy to find Kunitz books in libraries – he has a wonderful collected book of poetry. Although part of me just wants to stick with the poems themselves, I have to stay that Stanley is just one of the few beautiful human beings I have had the privilege to meet. To know him is to love him. He’s one of our most important poets – one of the few mystic poets our country has produced. The ones I’ve chosen for today aren’t so much in the mystic vein. “The Testing-Tree” might violate my “lucidity” rule somewhat. It’s “about” his imagination and experiences as a boy, but contains dreamlike sequences which might throw some readers. I love the little Rousseau-like bargain with the stones and the tree, and the last 9 lines still cut me when I read them. They’re worth the price of admission.

But on Oct. 12, the Library's new 95-year-old poet laureate, Stanley Kunitz (right), at times seemed to be doing just that. He opened the reading by announcing that he was worried about the young man who wrote the poem he was about to read. The poem was called "Vita Nova" and he wrote it when he was 23. He had reread it the night before, he said, with a "bit of surprise and some dismay." "I began to worry about the young man who wrote it," he said. "He seemed so alone and vulnerable, yet so proud and enthralled with the conviction of his destiny. I think he needs an older friend, a mentor, to show him the way. I'd like to volunteer, but I guess it is too late." The poem could be described as "Shakespearean." The poet vows to step out of daily life and henceforth dedicate himself to eternity. It is the kind of vow only a young person would make. The last stanza:
