I listen. I am always listening, Kunitz writes. The poems of Stanley Kunitz span worlds now disappeared. He is, perhaps, the only poet still writing who remembers vividly the start of World War I and World War II, not to mention Greenwich Village in its many heydays, the twenties, the thirties, the fifties, the sixties. Through all that time Kunitz has lived a life based on the precept that poetry is the truest artifact of a civilization.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Poet Stanley Kunitz to Read at Smith College NORTHAMPTON, Mass.-The Poetry Center at Smith College will present poet Stanley Kunitz at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 16, in Wright Hall Auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.
Called by many "a living legend," Kunitz has published 12 books of poetry in the last 70 years. He served as poet laureate of the United States for 2000 and 2001 and at the age of 96 is considered one of America's most important and lasting voices.
Founder of both the Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and Poets House in New York City, Kunitz' myriad honors include the Pulitzer Prize in 1959 for "Selected Poems: 1928-1958," the Bollingen Prize in 1987, the National Medal of Arts in 1993 and the National Book Award in 1995 for "Passing Through: Later Poems, New and Selected."
Born in 1905 in Worcester, Mass., Kunitz graduated summa cum laude from Harvard University in 1926 and received his master's degree from Harvard in 1927. His first book, "Intellectual Things," was published by Doubleday in 1930; his second book, "Passport to the War," came out more than a decade later in 1944. Besides his many books of poetry, he has written essays, edited reference books for H.W.Wilson and translated writers Voznesensky, Akhmatova and others.

STANLEY KUNITZ — OUR NEW POET LAUREATE Last October 12 a new U. S. poet laureate took over from Robert Pinsky. He is Stanley Kunitz, winner of a Pulitzer, a National Book Award, the Bollingen Prize, and on and on. His awards are impressive, as are his carefully crafted, unique and personal poems, but equally impressive is Kunitz' age. . .he was 95 last July. Alas for Thomas Hardy, who took quiet pride in being the oldest poet to be published in English, for Kunitz has a new book, Collected Poems, out this year. Alas for Wordsworth, too, who wrote: We poets in our youth begin in gladness;
But thereof comes in the end despondency and madness.
Stanley Kunitz has plenty of gladness still, for his Provincetown garden, for his wife (#3) of 42 years, for his daughter, and for each poem, which he says "comes in the form of a blessing, like rapture breaking on the mind." Kunitz was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, where his father was a dress manufacturer (The Persian Wrapper Co.) who was left bankrupt when an associate misappropriated some funds; he committed suicide before Stanley was born. The tragedy lives on in one of Kunitz' best known poems, "The Portrait:" My mother never forgave my father
for killing himself

Bold Type 's Poetry Editor Ernest Hilbert writes on Stanley Kunitz: "He published his first poem seventy years ago, the year that T.S. Eliot published 'Ash Wednesday', and he continues to compose today. In the course of the past seven decades, he has reaped the many awards and prizes of the American literary establishment." Stanley Kunitz and Friends Stanley Kunitz , recently chosen as Poet Laureate of the United States, served as advisor to The Human Experience , a Quaker-inspired collection of poetry and fiction by Soviet and American writers that was jointly edited and published in the United States and the Soviet Union in 1989. In May, 1987, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Kunitz gave a benefit poetry reading on behalf of the project, where he observed: "One of the discoveries that I've made in the course of my life is that there is a deep and touching solidarity and friendship among all writers and artists on this planet. Poets, in particular, constitute an international community of souls. I know that wherever I travel, whenever I'm among poets, I will be in the company of friends. This gies me hope because they are the ones who are instruments for fashioning greater harmony among peoples." Kunitz has translated into English such major poets as Anna Akhmatova, Yevgeni Yevtushenko, and Andrei Voznesensky. From "The Human Experience : A Literary Bridge for Peace" by Anthony Manousos

Stanley Kunitz U ranoj fazi svog pjesnistva Stanley Kunitz smatran je jednim od najznacajnijih americkih metafizickih pjesnika. Njegove Sabrane pjesme 1928 1958 priskrbile su mu Pulitzerovu nagradu. Pocetkom sedamdesetih njegovo pjesnistvo postaje osobnije, a moralna i emocionalna energija sto izvire iz njegove poezije jos se vise intenzivira stovanjem i uporabom forme. Stanley Kunitz rodjen je 1905.
Umjetnik
(The Artist)

80. Night Letter By Stanley Kunitz
Night Letter by stanley kunitz. The urgent letter that I try to write. Night after night to you to whom I turn,. The staunchless word, my language of the wound,.
http://www.provincetowngov.org/special/remember/Kunitz Poem.htm
Night Letter by Stanley Kunitz The urgent letter that I try to write Night after night to you to whom I turn, The staunchless word, my language of the wound, Begins to stain the page. Here in my room With my unkenneled need, the Faustian dog That chews my penitential bones, I hope And do not hope, I pray and mock my prayer, Twisting my coils, this dangling life of mine, Now twelve years come of age, and me unpleased With all my ways, my very littlest ones, My part, my lines, unless you hold them dear. Where is your ministry? I thought I heard A piece of laughter break upon the stair Like glass, but when I wheeled around I saw Keeping his rabbit-madness crouched inside, Sit at my desk and scramble all the news. The strangest things are happening. Christ! The dead, Pushing the membrane from their face, salute The dead and scribble slogans on our walls; Phantoms and phobias mobilize, thronging Are lying down, great crowds with fractured wills
