Kunitz Touches Me
I’ve been reading Stanley Kunitz’s poetry almost as long as I’ve been reading poetry, yet his poems always seem fresh to me. Every time I come back to them I find something new that allows me to feel life more vividly. It’s hard to ask much more than that from a poet. Although he seemed old when I first heard him read his poems in the early ‘60’s (perhaps because I was only twenty and he was in his fifties), he seems much younger when I read him now. Time has a funny way of doing that to us, doesn’t it? His poetry has changed since then, perhaps losing a little of the passion of the earlier poems, but, then, I’m afraid I've lost some of that passion in my own life. The first time I read Kunitz, my favorite poem was “She Wept, She Railed” but for years my favorite poem has been “The Testing Tree,” whose lines “In a murderous time/ the heart breaks and breaks/ and lives by breaking./ It is necessary to go/ through dark and deeper dark/ and not to turn” come as close to summarizing my personal philosophy as anything I’ve read. These two poems alone more than justify buying and reading his Collected Poems, or at least checking it out at your local library. His Collected Poems ends with: TOUCH ME
Summer is late, my heart.

Stanley Kunitz's "The Layers"
Stanley Kunitz, an American poet, born in Worcester, Massachusetts, in 1905, named Poet Laureate in 2000, speaks of age, observant of its changes. His poem, “The Layers” offers his observations of the steps and turns in a life lived thoughtfully, engaging in its twists, a life not left willingly at any age. “The Layers” speaks to the mature reader. Some observations: The Layers
I have walked through many lives,
some of them my own,
and I am not who I was,
though some principle of being
abides, from which I struggle
not to stray.
Who among us with a few years behind us is not aware of her own existence and the sharing of it with those we have created and with those we have chosen to live with. My children, parents, ancestors, husband, and friends have molded me and yet a core of me is unique, my own self, present at my creation to which I cling, “from which I struggle not to stray,” demanding recognition for me. Egocentric? Good. When I look behind

The Testing-Tree
On my way home from school
up tribal Providence Hill
past the Academy ballpark
where I could never hope to play
I scuffed in the drainage ditch
among the sodden seethe of leaves
hunting for perfect stones
rolled out of glacial time
into my pitcher's hand;
then sprinted lickety- split on my magic Keds from a crouching start, scarcely touching the ground with my flying skin as I poured it on for the prize of the mastery over that stretch of road

CONVERSATION
October 26, 2000
U.S. Poet Laureate Stanley Kunitz speaks with Elizabeth Farnsworth. JIM LEHRER: Finally tonight, a lifetime in poetry. Elizabeth Farnsworth reports. ( Applause ) ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Stanley Kunitz took up his duties as poet laureate October 12 with a reading of his poems at the Library of Congress. STANLEY KUNITZ: "Lamplighter." 1914. "What I remember most was not the incident at Sarajevo but the first flying steam kettle puffing round the bend." ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: Kunitz was nine years old when World War I broke out. He was already working, lighting gas lamps on the roads around Worcester, Massachusetts. STANLEY KUNITZ: "I stood on the rim of the buggy wheel and raised my enchanted wand with its tip of orange flame." ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: That flame seemed a metaphor for the light Kunitz has cast ever since in poems which span the century. On this evening he read deeply personal works, including one about his father's suicide. STANELY KUNITZ: "My mother never forgave my father for killing himself, especially at such an awkward time, and in a public park, that spring, when I was waiting to be born."

Poems by Stanley Kunitz
End of Summer

An agitation of the air,
A perturbation of the light
Admonished me the unloved year
Would turn on its hinge that night.
I stood in the disenchanted field
Amid the stubble and the stones,
Amazed, while a small worm lisped to me
The song of my marrow-bones.
Blue poured into summer blue, A hawk broke from his cloudless tower, the roof of the silo blazed, and I knew that part of my life was over. Already the iron door of the north Clangs open: birds, leaves, snows Order their population forth, And a cruel wind blows. Passing Through Nobody in the widow's household ever celebrated anniversaries. In the secrecy of my room I would not admit I cared that my friends were given parties. Before I left town for school my birthday went up in smoke in a fire at City Hall that gutted the Department of Vital Statistics. If it weren't for a census report of a five-year-old White Male sharing my mother's address at the Green Street tenement in Worcester I'd have no documentary proof that I exist. You are the first

Biography of Stanley Kunitz Stanley Kunitz was a well-established poet throughout the United States of America. He is 97 years old and is still writing. He creates poetry about his father’s suicide when he was still in his mother’s womb. He tries to combine death with life in his very own creative style. Kunitz is able to mix death with the emotions of other people. He combines death also with the physical feelings of the time in which the person died. He is a gifted writer who has the ability to relate terrible things to normal times. Kunitz has the ability to relate tragic times and terrible events to the normal lifestyle of a human being. Kunitz, a native of Worcester, Massachusetts, now lives in the big city of Manhattan. Stanley Kunitz was born in 1905 and is still a very strong writer. As critics have said “Most poets dry up by the age of 50. Stanley is still writing strong at the age of 90.” This shows that Kunitz hasn’t lost his talents of creating symbolic poems that relate death to life.
