Michael P. Kube-McDowell:Exile
Michael P. Kube-McDowell is a very much overlooked author of hard SF. I admit that I'm saying this only on the strength of two booksthis one and his last, The Quiet Pools and one novelette, "Slac //", but I feel confident the rest of his work will hold up. (And I'm not just saying this because I know him from Fidonet. Really.) It's perhaps unfortunate that I read this book so close to Orson Scott Card's The Memory of Earth , because the cultures share some nontrivial similarities, mostly having to do with women being able to own property and men not. It takes a bit of time into the book before we find out more about the history of the colony(and before the main character discovers his world to be a colony), so I won't spoil much of it here. Civilization on the planet is confined to a single cityand indeed, most of the inhabitants believe that city, and the river that flows through it, to be all that really exists, and certainly all that is habitable. Exile is considered worse than death. The book is divided into two threads, the 'present'(done in first person) and the 'past', done in third person. In the latter, one man, Kedar Nan, has stumbled across early records from the era of colonization, and he is running a semi-underground school to discuss and disseminate this information. The main character, Meer Fas, runs across him by chance, and gets absorbed into this circle, although he is always somewhat of an outsider. The school is galvanized by the arrival of a starship, its attempts to communicate with the city, and its eventual silencing. They are arrested(except for Meer, who escapes fortuitously)and sentenced to death or exile. Meer himself, drafted into 'jury duty', passes a sentence of exile on Kedar, rather than have Kedar's own son forced to kill his father.

Isaac Asimov's Robot City by Michael P. Kube-McDowell
Derec wakes up in a survival pod, on an asteroid, amidst a colony of mining robots minus his memory. He escapes from them only to land up in the clutches of another bunch in Robot City. Derec has Katherine for companythe only other human there, who exasperatingly enough does nothing for his amnesia. As robots abide strictly by the law of not harming humans, a dead man narrows the field of suspicion to the two of them, for which they are promptly imprisoned. Will Derec regain his memory and freedom is what remains to be seen?

    First Published 1990
    Ace paperback edition 1991
371 Pages This novel presents an interesting puzzle. When reading it, there is a strong sense of the SF writing of the 1940's and 1950's, but on closer examination there are not very many obvious similarities. Certainly the book is in no way derivative, yet every page you expect a sign saying "Robert Heinlein was here". To simply dismiss this question in terms of style would be too simplistic. This for no other reason than that the book has been constructed along the lines of a spy thriller - an approach not used by the "masters" ("dinosaurs") implied above. Examining the themes contained within the work is more fruitful. The book revolves around the construction of an interstellar colony ship and the various groups of people involved in it - the builders, the saboteurs and the potential passengers. In particular the family structures and relationships are explored in depth. Shades of Methuselah's Children - only Heinlein never explored anything in as much depth. While we are looking for parallels, check out the reverential attitude towards science, particularly genetics, exhibited in the book. However, regardless of its heritage, the most important question that has to be answered about The Quiet Pools is: is it worth reading? Kube-McDowell may not be a great artist, but he is an excellent craftsman. This is his best work to date, and it is very well constructed. The plot is strong and consistent, the science is good, the characters well developed and the action well paced with no dull spots. Do not expect to give your sense of wonder a workout, there are no literary frontiers being broken here. But these frontiers are not broken very often anyway. So while you are waiting for it to happen, sit back, read and enjoy.

Book Note: Michael P. Kube-McDowell, Empery
This note contains spoilers for the book. We never do find out just what the Mizari are. But it looks like they won't be coming back and sterilizing Earth again soon.
My Booknotes on Michael P. Kube-McDowell
Empery Emprise Enigma But we have no explanation at all why they did it the first time, either. They do destroy several human ships. The don't try to go after their sources. It's vaguely suggested that they went after the ships only when they weren't transmitting (little hint of Ventus here), and the state of the systems suggests a massive cleanup; but that doesn't explain why they followed up the starship of the Founder civilization and sterilized Earth, but apparently make no attempt to follow up on the more recent contacts once they've destroyed the ships. There's also a big part played by the clash of some crazy people who can't feel safe knowing the Mizari are out there (this is crazy?) and some other crazy people who think that it's best not to disturb them. I side with the first people except that it's so obvious they're nowhere near up to the job; so that the second course is the only possible logical one at this point. Unfortunately I don't think anything has been added to my understanding of this class of conflict. Merritt Thackery, the twit from book two, is back, and in the end he saves the day by destroying two human battle-groups magically from out of the blue. Then he gets to go off and meet Gabriel again, which is certainly a good outcome from his point of view.

Book Note: Michael P. Kube-McDowell, Enigma
This note contains spoilers for the book. Somehow I missed that this was book two in a series, although it says so on the cover. Nothing I've read so far gives me the slightest hint it's a series book, though, and I'm about 2/3 through. These appear to be his earliest novels.
My Booknotes on Michael P. Kube-McDowell
Empery Emprise Enigma I'm liking this quite a lot. The main character is an adolescent twit, it seems to me, even though he's too old to justify it right now. But not too intolerably idiotic. And he may even be growing up. The quotes from his future books are a "clue" that he's going to be important, anyway. I have fond memories of The Quiet Pools , and he's a useful and interesting presence on rec.arts.sf.written. Okay, finished it. Yes, the main character is certainly a twit. Earnest, selfish, undirected, generally an idiot. I still don't know if he wins through to something important by luck, or by mysticism, and that bothers me too (being as you may know rather unfond of mysticism). He reminds me of the idiot in the Feintuch books that everybody hates so much, actually. The section where he intuits the existence and location of the D'shanna, obsessively goes after them (while the people around him clearly recognize that he's behaving obessively and illogically, but don't take the effort to stop him)
