    INTERNATIONAL MODULE
    NAME: P. J. Colbert
TITLE AND COURSE NUMBER: English II - ENG 31:20
MODULE TITLE: A Thematic Approach to Internationalizing English
    DESCRIPTION OF MODULE
English II is a second semester writing course with the research
paper as a major assignment. The International focus will be
introduced with a thematic framework. First, the students will
read essays on three themes: Cultural Traditions, Power and
Dominance, and the Multinational Society. The selections will
provide both international and local perspectives. As a first assignment, students will summarize an article on one of these three themes from a list on reserve in the college library. Secondly, the students will be divided into research groups organized by the themes or subthemes. Each student will research an international topic within that theme, working in the peer groups throughout the research and writing process. After research papers are completed, the collaborative groups will present a panel discussion on their research topics.

But the Judge Won't Allow Us to Make Our Case
    by Marilyn Krysl
On March 15 I was one of 19 engaging in civil disobedience near Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora to register opposition to war with Iraq. I believed our government had been less than candid about its "evidence." I doubted that weapons of mass destruction existed or that Saddam would be easily dispatched. A simplistic reaction to 9-11 had precluded the administration's formulating a viable foreign policy, and I suspected Iraqis wouldn't welcome an occupation. I feared for servicemen and women treated as expendable, many of whom return — if they return — maimed, ill and all-too-often demoralized (see former Marine Anthony Swoford's "Jarhead" and Chris Hedges' "War Is A Force That Gives Us Meaning"). And after the 1994 LIFE article on American servicemen from the Gulf war who'd had children with birth defects that matched those of Iraqi children — and the documentary "Invisible War: Depleted Uranium and the Politics of Radiation" — I dreaded our troops' being forced again to contaminate themselves, Iraqis and the environment with this substance. Civil disobedience has a venerable history. Our own American Thoreau went to jail for refusing to pay the poll tax because it funded slavery. Gandhi's high-profile use of this tactic set an example that was continued by the women's suffrage movement in Britain, African-Americans struggling for civil rights, opponents of the nuclear arms race and nuclear power industry, the sanctuary and divestment campaigns of the '80s, South Africa's anti-apartheid movement and ACT UP — to name a few.

DENVER - A peace rally held was held at noon today at the north gate of Buckley Air Force Base in Aurora, Colorado in which an estimated 300 protesters assembled. The rally was peaceful, with people speaking out in opposition to the illegal, immoral and unjustified war planned by the Bush administration against Iraq, despite massive public opinion from all around the world. The rally focused on the themes of Save Our Troops, Save the Iraqi People, No blood for Oil and Stop this War.
At approximately 2 pm a group of 19 people engaged in a civil disobedience protest action
by blockading the road leading to the base. The location was along 6th Avenue at Tower Road in Aurora, Colorado, across the street from the main rally. This orderly and well orchestrated protest with an estimated crowd of about 300 supporters ultimately led to the arrest of 19 individuals for blocking the road and refusing to leave. Police arrested these non-violent people in their act of civil disobedience and they were jailed at facilities of the city of Aurora Police Department. As of this release (6pm) all have been released. The protesters engaged in this civil disobedience at Buckley AFB in a symbolic act to directly illustrate the connections between the space based intelligence systems and war targeting functions of this base as well as numerous military contractors who operate there in virtually seamless arrangements with the Department of Defense. Some of the associated companies at Buckley are among the largest military contractors in the world, including Lockheed-martin, Raytheon, TRW, and Northrup-Grumman, all of which have great influence on national foreign and war policy, and have vested interests in promoting a war with Iraq. The protesters ultimate objective is to stop this unjustified war against Iraq and insist upon utilizing peaceful means to resolve and prevent international conflict.
