WORDS WORDS WORDS
I love you! You say, "I don't believe you."
My word it seems is not as good as gold
is old and I am thirty-six with or without you
and action speaks. Your back to me is cold.
"I love you," I say. "I don't believe you for a minute!" You say it like you mean it. At forty-two
you'll buy no noisy bill of goods. You've been sold
old roses, red violets, you're black and blue with compliments! Darling I don't know what to do
to stop my mouth. I feel, therefore I am bold:
mean that." O.K. All right. The air turns blue
at twilight, I close my empty mouth and go -
I'm old. Roses aren't red, violets aren't blue anymore and singing hurts, breath hurts. Two days later you reconsider, come in from the cold, older. "Roses are red again, and violets blue and I love you!" You don't say. Well I don't believe you. Marilyn Krysl More of my favorite poems

Genre Collection (Poems) (105 pp.) Poem (105 pp.) Keywords Alternative Medicine Caregivers Colonialism Death and Dying ... Women in Medicine Summary This is Krysl's fifth book of poetry, and the second to be published by the National League for Nursing Press. The collection is divided into seven sections: Self Healer; Self and Nature; All My Relations; Healers; Calcutta; Sanctuary; and Death, Life. The sections, and, in fact, many of the poems, are preceded by brief introductory explanatory remarks. Krysl states that "this book records many moments of healing in widely varying circumstances." These moments, for her, include a summer volunteering in the Kalighat Home for the Destitute and Dying, administered by Mother Teresa's Sisters of Charity, and time spent with curanderas, Navajo healers, and "western" alternative healers. A sampling of poems from a number of the sections included in this collection are "Cancer Floor," "Curandera," "Innanna," and "Interpreter."

Krysl, Marilyn Midwife and Other Poems on Caring
Genre Collection (Poems) (43 pp.) Poem (43 pp.) Keywords Caregivers Childbirth Empathy Human Worth ... Women's Health Summary Several of these poems deal with pregnancy and childbirth. "The Womb Is the Body's Most Powerful Muscle" celebrates a woman's knowledge of her own body just before she gives birth. In "The Birthing Room" Krysl describes the pulse and atmosphere of a midwife-attended birth. "Midwife" is an ecstatic poem about the power and "connection" of midwifery. Other poems in this collection take an ironic, comic view of the human condition ("Feet," "Skin"), or reflect on issues of human dignity in the health care setting ("Quadriplegic: the Bath," "Burn Patient"). Commentary This short book of poems grew out of the year (1987-1988) Marilyn Krysl spent as artist-in-residence at the Center for Human Caring of the Univ. of Colorado School of Nursing. The Center commissioned her to reflect and write about day-to-day experiences of nurses and nursing students, and their relationships with patients.

CARPE DIEM
Three bees seize
this opportunity to
buzz me, but see:
now, instead of three,
there are many: lazy,
buzzing me and the blue
Felicias, all of us convened
to please the powers
that be, bees and me
in this blue haze of daisies, lazily seeking the slow leak of be it: these fuzzy spinners of honey, interested in me only incidentally me, a soft, dazed, lazy she, going slowly, deliciously, daisy and bee crazy. WARSCAPE WITH LOVERS Scent of plumeria, and the smell of burning. Not one or the other, but both. Destruction, and the blossom. Sweetheart, I'm afraid. That boy with the rifle breaks the catechism in two. And in two. Let me see us whole, beside the sea. My body busy, paying attention to yours. Already we rock each other with our voices. Already we're braiding the invisible cord. That burning

Emotion before craft Another tome from someone who's paycheck comes from a University rather than readers. And she teaches the same. These type of writers should get out of their ivory towers and into the trenches and learn their craft, especially before they set out to teach others. This book was strong on emotion, but weak on craft. Unfortunate cover and title; finely crafted stories within. This is one book that cannot be judged by its title and cover. These strongly focused and insightful stories are both penetrating and lyrical revealing emotional landscapes of men and women people dealing with important issues. Some stories reflect the disquiet of interpersonal relationships; others deal with the harsh realities of lives interconnected in a global context. I attended a reading where Ms. Krysl read one story, about a man coming to terms with his role in the social injustices of his business dealings in a third world country. The audience was stunned. Instead of a cover of hazy red and gray, with an atom bomb explosion at the top and a reclining bikini-clad woman on the bottom, this book deserved a title and cover representative of the fine quality of the stories within it. This is a book to read, contemplate, and then re-read.

SUMMER SOLSTICE,
BATTICALOA, SRI LANKA
The war had turned inward until it resembled
suicide. The only soothing thing was water.
I passed the sentries, followed the surf out of sight.
I would sink into the elements, become simple.
Surf sounds like erasure, over and over.
I lay down and let go, the way you trust an animal.
When I opened my eyes, all down the strand small crabs, the bright yellow of a crayon, had come out onto the sand. Their numbers, scattered, resembled the galactic spill and volume of the stars. I, who had lain down alone, emptied, waked at the center of ten thousand prayers. Who would refuse such attention. I let it sweeten me back into the universe. I was alive, in the midst of great loving, which is all I've ever wanted. The soldiers of both sides probably wanted just this. - Marilyn Krysl var site="s12gracedpoet" Go Home

How To Accommodate Men
Coffee House Press, 1998
In this book Krysl writes about women who take care of men and get taken for granted in return. She looks at child abuse from the view points of both male and female children, and she explores the different coping mechanisms that boys and girls develop. Several stories discuss women in war-torn or military states who try to protect themselves and their children. Body image, witchcraft, homosexuality, and aging are among other issues crafted into these disturbing, well-written, and all-too-recognizable stories. -Library Journal

Transfiguration
Marilyn Krysl

The blind talk of a way out. I see
on the sheets, sarongs messed with it,
every other woman needing a bedpan,
then you had to empty them, rinse and begin again. I began over.
Washing another woman my mantra.
This is the way to the worms' home.
Soon it will be your turn. The sun sank. Late light, huge, diminuendoed toward black. The room stank, though it was still the cathedral. The beds were low, you had to kneel: I dipped a handful of rag in a bowl, watched the water gather in its threads. Little by little the water filled it to the lip with the shine of wetness.
