This is a book full of Robert Kroetsch. The field notes are his notes in an investigation of Kroetsch's origins, Kroetsch growing up, Kroetsch the man, Kroetsch the lover, Kroctsch the poet. And that's only the first hundred pages. Strange that so much of Kroetsch keeps us interested. It may be that we feel that we really are uncovering something in this dig. Part of the intrigue, too, is the novel laying-out of the finds. There are double columns of print, margin-annotated free verse, chunks of prose, unrhymed couplets, caesura-ed lines, italics, repetitions dancing on the page, and the whole thing taking on a lumbering life. In the second part, "Advice to My Friends," Kroetsch expands and adds Kroetsch the traveller, Kroetsch the knower of exotic women, Kroetsch the friend of other famous writers, and Kroetsch the father of two daughters. Even the name dropping is done well. Students who take the journey and keep their minds open will find the bones of novels in some of the long poems. Ian Dempsey, Cambridge, ON.

Buy it online Read a review of The Man from the Creeks "We use stories to give shape to our experiences. Service did it so well that it's difficult to get past him. By having my narrator spring forth from the poem, I got loose. A character created by Service talking back to Service, correcting him, so to speak." See Book Reviews on January Magazine. Robert Kroetsch certainly takes his time in composing novels. His newest one, The Man from the Creeks , which is set in Canada's 1897-99 Klondike gold rush, appeared six years after his previous work, The Puppeteer , which had followed the publication of Alibi way back in 1983. Reports are that The Man from the Creeks went through 13 versions and at least one title change (from Klondike Love Song ) before it was ready for submission. Yet this British Columbian author and former creative-writing teacher is hardly ever idle, producing poetry and essays. And while he may not be as prolific as some better-known fictionists, he certainly hasn't suffered among critics for that fact. He won Canada's 1969 Governor General's Award for The Studhorse Man , and each new novel since seems to fetch him a fresh round of praise from reviewers, even if those people don't always quite understand Kroetsch's resistance to the conventions of modern prose writing, his interest in the arcana of his subject matter, or his often-sly humor.

Robert Kroetsch Biocritical Essay by Aritha van Herk
Any attempt to bio-criticize Robert Kroetsch into position can only end in frustration. This writer distrusts coherent story, sees closure as a self-imposed death, mistrusts the author/himself so much he over-glosses his own text. Not one of his works has managed to escape his own arm's length and after-the-fact commentary, but we must approach that commentary with doubt. There is no one metaphor, no one autobiographical detail, that can help us to fix this master of the art of deception, this trickster incarnate, this expert at the sleight of hand. Critical responses to his fiction and poetry range from outrage to awe; he has been praised as an innovator and damned as an overly intellectual adherent of the post-modernist school of thought. In a recently published conversation, his close friend Rudy Wiebe, responded to a deconstructionist remark with the exasperated words: "Bob, you're always horsing around with language!"
In Kroetsch's writing, words do not mean what they usually mean; language goes beyond signification and contains its own possibilities: "The person who becomes a writer is a person who starts to notice the language itself instead of what it signifies."

Robert Kroetsch
Born in 1927 in Heisler, Alberta, Robert Kroetsch is Canada's major postmodern writer. He remained in the prairies throughout his youth, as is evident from the settings for any
of his novels. He attended the University of Alberta and received his BA in 1948. From there, he worked at various odd jobs in the Canadian North and Labrador. He attended McGill for a year in 1954 to study under Hugh MacLennan, and then completed his MA at Middlebury College in Vermont. He earned a Ph.D. in creative writing at the University of Iowa in 1961. He remained in the States until the 1970s when he accepted a teaching position at the University of Manitoba. He is now retired from teaching and lives in British Columbia. Linda Hutcheon calls Robert Kroetsch "Mr. Canadian Postmodern." His first novel in 1965, But We Are Exiles , may follow a more realist tradition but combines elements of myth and literary allusion. His "Out West" triptych, Words of My Roaring The Studhorse Man (1969) and Gone Indian (1973) further explore myth and the magical/fabulous. With all of the uses of myth, magic and literary allusions, his texts resist one single reading or interpretation, seriously challenging traditional literary practices. Also prevalent in his novels is the parody of the traditional male quest, seen in

The Man from the Creeks
by Robert Kroetsch
Random House Canada, Toronto
307 pages, $32.00
reviewed by Joy Gugeler
Pitched on his head, and pumped full of lead, was Dangerous Dan McGrew,
While the man from the creeks lay clutched to the breast of the lady that's known as Lou.
Robert Service, "The Shooting of Dan McGrew" Like a half-mad prospector bellying up to the Klondike, it is hard not to scratch your three-day beard and wonder how often it is possible to mine the veins of the Gold Rush and still come up with a shiny nugget of fiction, that is. If Robert Kroetsch's new novel, The Man from the Creeks, is testament, it is surely clear there is still "gold in them thar hills".
Kroetsch is no stranger to the geohistorical trek through the rich territory of our past, as Badlands and elements of his other novels (The Studhorse Man, The Puppeteer, and others) attest. Kroetsch revels in trickery, myth, and word play, thrills to an inverted metaphor or an upended icon, and the Gold Rush is certainly ripe for excavation on all accounts.
But this book, for British Columbians especially, will signify more than an obligatory nod to the legend that ties the Gold Rush to their province of residence (and Kroetsch's he lives in Victoria); it signifies a commitment to making the sepia photographs and "backwoods" prose of the era live and breathe in the realm of fiction as well as non-, in the realm of our imaginations.

To see more articles and book reviews from this and other journals visit UTPJOURNALS online at UTPJOURNALS.com Visions of Heidegger in Dennis Lee and Robert Kroetsch 'Why is it Being and not rather the void?' is the first of all questions.
Martin Heidegger Canadians do not ask themselves who they are. They ask, rather, if they are. Robert Kroetsch I II In Kingdom of Absence, Lee's 1967 apprentice book of poetry, we can already detect a will towards silence out of which authenticity might be born:
deserted reaches of the living void
may I, like some before me, find the way
by waiting, lost, dispersed, to come to be
sufficient to the measure of abyss. (58). [C]adence seeks the gestures of being a Canadian human ... But if we live in space which is radically in question for us, that makes our barest speaking a problem to itself. For voice does issue in part from civil space. And alienation in that space will enter and undercut our writing, make it recoil upon itself, become a problem to itself. ('Cadence' 1973, 37) To speak unreflectingly in a colony, then, is to use words that speak only alien space. To reflect is to fall silent, discovering that your authentic space does not have words; ... you are, among other things, the people who have made an alien inauthenticity their own ... But perhaps ... our job was not to fake a space of our own and write it up, but rather to find words for our space-lessness. ('Cadence' 1973, 47)
