Nancy Kress has a good Probability
By Kelly A. Harmon here aren't many authors out there who can claim they became published writers because they failed at embroidery and quilting. But Hugo- and Nebula-award winning author Nancy Kress can. As a stay-at-home mom with plenty of time on her hands, she found she could experiment with hobbies. And, when she discovered she wasn't cut out for needlework of any sort, she tried writing. Since then she's written scads of short fiction and 18 books: fantasy, science fiction and young adult novels, and even two "how-to" books for aspiring writers. Kress has won three Nebulas and a Hugo for her work, and, in her own words, "lost a dozen more of these awards." Her short piece "Beggars in Spain" won both a Nebula and a Hugo, and inspired her Sleeper trilogy ( Beggars in Spain , Morrow/Avon, 1994; Beggars and Choosers , Tor, 1996; and Beggars Ride "The Most Famous Little Girl in the World" and "Wetlands Preserve" SciFiction Her, latest novel

Her new book Probability Moon (out in July 2000) takes us to deep space, with high adventure and a mysterious alien artifact. And most exciting of all, this book is the first of a proposed Probability trilogy! Nancy is best known for her Earth-based near-future Beggars series, in which she envisions a world divided between the Sleepless (genetically altered humans who require no sleep) and the Sleepers (the rest of humanity). We spoke to Nancy Kress about women in science fiction, the writer's lifestyle, and (naturally) Probability Moon scifi dimensions Let's hear about your new book Probability Moon , which is out this month.

Nancy Kress Nancy Kress was born Nancy Anne Koningisor in Buffalo, New York, on January 20, 1948. She grew up in East Aurora, New York, a sleepy upstate town given to cows and apples, where she spent most of her childhood either reading or playing in the woods. She went to college at State University of New York at Plattsburgh, earning a degree in elementary education, which she put to use for the next four years teaching the fourth grade. She liked this. In 1973 she left teaching and moved to Rochester to marry Michael Joseph Kress, an insurance agent. They had two sons, Kevin Michael Kress and Brian Stephen Kress, and divorced in 1984. It was while Nancy was pregnant with Brian that she started writing fiction. She had never planned on becoming a writer, but staying at home full-time with infants left her time to experiment. She was not good at embroidery or quilting, her previous choices, and so became a writer. Her first story, the eminently forgettable "The Earth Dwellers," appeared in GALAXY in 1976. Her first novel, THE PRINCE OF MORNING BELLS, appeared in 1981 from Pocket Books. In 1984, Nancy went to work for Stanton & Hucko, an advertising agency that has since been bought by Young & Rubicam. She wrote corporate copy for the next six years, writing fiction part time, raising her children, and occasionally teaching at State University of New York at Brockport, where she had earned an M.S. in education (1977) and an M.A. in English (1979). In 1990 she went full-time as an SF writer. The first thing she wrote in this new status was the novella version of "Beggars In Spain."

Maximum Light by Nancy Kress
A Review by Brian James Grace
Brian Grace 772108 English 16 Section 2 Nancy Kress’ Maximum Light can be clearly seen as modern depiction of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein. The ambition of scientist Victor Frankenstein to create human life is mirrored in Vanderbilt Grant’s willingness to turn his head as illegitimate companies do harmful research that he feels will, in time, save humanity. When Maggie Clementi, Nick’s wife, said, “You think you can draw a line. This much evil is okay but no more. And you think you can force everyone else to toe your line, right?’’ (216). He responded, “Yes! Because we have to! Damn it, Maggie, my job is to get things done! And if the government combined with public opinion makes it so this is the only way I can get them done, then I’ll do and tolerate and enforce whatever the fuck I have to!” (216). Both Vanderbilt Grant and Victor Frankenstein turned their backs on society in order to accomplish what they perceived as a scientific breakthrough for the betterment of mankind. Shelley, Mary. Frankenstein. Published 1818, 1989, 1984

Nancy Kress (June 21-25) Nancy Kress is the author of twenty-one books: three fantasy novels, ten SF novels, two thrillers, three collections of short stories, one YA novel, and two books on writing. She is perhaps best known for the "Sleepless" trilogy that began with Beggars in Spain . The novel was based on a Nebula- and Hugo-winning novella of the same name; the series then continued with Beggars and Choosers and Beggars Ride . The trilogy explores questions of genetic engineering, social structure, and what society's "haves" owe its "have-nots." More recent are Nothing Human , (Golden Gryphon Press, 2003) and Crossfire (Tor, 2003), both novels-very differing novels-of humanity's prospects for survival as a species. Nancy's short fiction has won three Nebulas, science fiction's "Oscar," and a Hugo award. Probability Space won the prestigious 2003 John W. Campbell Award, given by the Center for Science Fiction Studies at the University of Kansas. Her work has been translated into Swedish, French, Italian, German, Spanish, Portugese, Polish, Croatian, Lithuanian, Romanian, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian. In addition to writing fiction, Nancy is the monthly "Fiction" columnist for Writer's Digest magazine. Ina former life she was a copywriter for Xerox, Bausch & Lomb, and various other corporations.

Conclusion: Recommended I really don't follow short fiction all that much, but I do pick up the occasional anthology and this was one of them. And an impressive one at that. Nancy Kress is clearly someone with writing talent and short fiction seems especially suited to her abilities. Virtually all of the stories in this volume, from the Hugo winner "Beggars in Spain" to "Dancing on Air" are first rate. The title is taken from the fact that most of the stories deal with biotechnology in some way. Usually the way is that there is some terrible side effect. Kress seems to have an exceptionally negative view of technology and its effect on our future. Perhaps she merely intends these as cautionary tales, but there do seem to be quite a few anti-technology, neo-luddite types around these days and I suspect that Kress has some sympathy with their way of thinking. Looking back from 1999, technology has been almost uniformly beneficial to humanity. With technology's record to date, I can't see why there is so much doom and gloom about the future on the part of so many people. There are dangers from technology, but they are more subtle than Kress' simple unforseen side effects. I don't want to go off on a tangent about this here, but for those interested in exploring some of these issues, I highly recommend Steve Talbott's NETFUTURE newsletter. I don't agree with Talbott on a lot of things, but his worries are a lot more complex and reasoned than Kress'. Of course it's not really fair to compare a theme from an SF short story to a non-fiction newsletter, but I'm going to do it anyway.
