1987 Notable Canadian Picture-Books By Joan Weller
Ottawa Public Library
Volume 16 Number 4
Here are some of the highlights from Canadian illustrated children's books of 1987. On November 17, 1987, at the National Library of Canada, Barbara Reid was awarded the 1987 Elizabeth Mrazik Cleaver Canadian Picture Book Award for Have You Seen Birds? (Scholastic-TAB). In her letter of acceptance, Barbara Reid said, When working on a picture book, l feel that the illustrator must please herselfnot fill some marketing need or hit a specific target group. This makes a more honest book, but it can terrify the illustrator when it's time to reveal this personal vision.... Awards like this are encouraging. It's gratifying to know that someone is looking at this book. . .it's exhilarating to find out they Iike it.... I think Elizabeth would be gratified to know that all her hard work has made a real impact on Canadian children's book illustration as well as children's illustrators. With this award she further encourages us on our journey. Reid also won the prestigious Ezra Jack Keats Award, which carries a prize of $5,000 (U.S.).

Reading List for Grades Kindergarten to Eighth
Link to reading list This information lists titles of books that your K-8 child will enjoy. They were selected by Long Beach Unified School District teachers and librarians because they are particularly interesting and engaging for children. Although these titles were chosen mainly to be read aloud, toward the end of your child's school year, some children may be able also to read a few of these titles independently. Many children will also "pretend-read" these stories, particularly ones they have heard over and over. If this happens, give your child lots of praise and encouragement, since "pretend reading" is an important early step on the road to "real reading." Some of the titles on the list may be familiar to you; you may remember them as favorites from your own childhood. Other titles are more recent and may introduce you to new authors and illustrators. Either way, be sure that the books you and your child select to read are ones you both enjoy. If a book is a "hit" with a child, parents may well end up reading it again and again. It's much more pleasant to reread books we really like!

Humourous, cheerful artwork illustrates this "I spy" game, which allows participation of both adult and child in discovering the familiar nursery characters hidden within each picture. Blake, Quentin. Mr. Magnolia. Cape, 1980. Mr. Magnolia owned many unusual items, but "had only one boot." An appealing nonsense book with humourous rhyming text and happy illustrations. Bornstein, Ruth. Little Gorilla. Seabury Press, 1976. Everyone loves little gorilla, even when he grows to be a big gorilla! Bourgeois, Paulette. Franklin in the Dark. Kids Can Press, 1987. Franklin, a turtle, is afraid of the dark so instead of crawling into his shell, he drags it along behind him. A fun story about common fears. Burningham, John.

52. Wishing
It would be a good choice for a midrange third grade reader. kovalski,maryann., _Frank and Zelda_ (Kids Can Press, 1990). Frank

Wishing Contributor's Form (list #232)
  • "The Old Woman and the Vinegar Bottle" and the one about the man who is offered three wishes; and wishes for (1) a pudding; (2) for the pudding to be stuck to the nose of his wife, who had just scolded him for wasting his wish in the pudding; (3) for the pudding to be at the Devil! I Wish I were a Butterfly....I can't recall the author, but Ed Young did the lovely art work . I have used it with second graders successfully, having them write about their wishes and then trying some of the chalk/pastel drawings in the style of the artist. The book makes a nice statement about self-acceptance in a rather suble way. , Freckle Juice Alexander, Lloyd Cat Who Wished to be a Man (1973) When he begins dealing with humanity, Lionel the cat begins to understand why his wizard master was reluctant to change him into a man. Baylor, Byrd Illustrated by: Parnall, Peter. Hawk, I'm Your Brother (1976) ALAN 1977 Rudy Soto takes a baby hawk to raise in hope the kinship will bring him closer to his goal of flying. Billingsley, Franny Well Wished. Two girls switch bodies after making a wish at the town wishing well, which, if I remember correctly, will only grant one wish per person. One of the girls, who had a physical disability, refuses to switch back, and the protagonist is faced with either accepting her fate or tricking her friend into wishing them back into their original forms, since she has used her own wish already. There are some rather sinister characters in this novel, and you may decide that the plot and themes are too advanced for third graders, but it's worth a look, I think. The more sophisticated readers in the class would find a lot to ponder.

53. Literacy Program
kovalski, maryann, The Wheels On The Bus, Little, Brown and Co., Boston,1987; Kroll, Steven, It s Groundhog Day , Scholastic Trade, 1995;
http://www.timmyabell.com/literacy.htm
For years Timmy has presented folk music and storytelling with a focus on various educational elements including historical perspectives, southern culture, American heros, musical styles, instruments and so on. Now he has designed a new program which integrates a solid focus on the links between the music and literature.
It is astounding how many folk songs have counterparts which can be found in the library. Timmy is compiling an extensive bibliography which includes books appropriate at every age level found in many school resource centers. Before each program, Timmy will contact the media specialist to design a specific repertoire of songs and stories which have links to specific books in that school’s own library.
Students who participate in this presentation will leave with an excitement for reading that they have never felt before. This will be a program designed to draw out the richness of American folk music with the specific goal of drawing students in to the library.
