First Nations Affiliation: Chipewyan; Cree After her mother died from tuberculosis, Jane Ash Poitras was adopted at the age of five by a German-Canadian widow and for the next twenty years her Native ancestry was denied. Poitras earned first a degree in microbiology at the University of Alberta in Edmonton. In 1981, she reconnected with her ancestral community, and subsequently chose to study art full-time, completing an M.F.A in 1985 at Columbia University in New York. Central to her work is an exploration of the impact of colonialism, both past and present, as well as the political and spiritual strength of the Indigenous peoples of the Americas. Poitras's expressionistic mixed media-assemblaged works employ a postmodern vocabulary which reflect her advanced formal training and place her at the forefront of a new generation of Native artists.

The Canadian Literature of Rock 'n' Roll
in Relation to Generation and Folk Music
Susan Wharton This paper is a historiographical work chronicling some of the references made in relation to generation and folk music in Rock ‘n’ Roll. In his opening notes to the book “Axes, Chops and Hot Licks,” Ritchie Yorke writes “every experience; personal or collective, can be chronicled in word and song.” The 1960s generation, the baby boomers, were aware of the generational factor, which allowed them their power and also used the vehicle of folk music, as a form of protest. The main concern of music purists regarding folk music and the boom generation seems to be that folk has always been the music of the people, delivered free. The boom generation, and music for that generation, including folk music, was a for-profit capitalist enterprise. The quotes used look at the issue of the comfort level of pairing traditional, not-for-profit folk music, with the 1960s for-profit music industry of the baby boom. By the late 1960s some of the boom generation had become “hippies [who] embraced the beliefs of the past… to create a counter culture.” Mainstream culture was capitalist, white, middle-class oriented. The youth generation’s counter culture, while eventually proving to be based in the capitalist, white, middle class, tried its best to shed all three images.

The Next Canada: In Search of Our Future Nation
McClelland and Stewart 2000. xiv, 343. $34.95 Reviewed in University of Toronto Quarterly by Desmond Morton Talking to public school children from her temporary perch as writer-in-residence at the Regina Public Library, Myrna Kostash found that 'my audiences had only vague knowledge of what I was referring to when I talked about the Plains of Abraham or the War Measures Act or Margaret Laurence.' Equally, she realized, 'had they quizzed me about what they knew, I would likewise have drawn a blank.' She had encountered, of course, a very old problem, normally resolved in all generations by grumbling into the eternal night. As writer, journalist, and author of All of Baba's Children , Kostash adopted the uncommon but appropriate solution of exploring this unknown. From 1997 to 2000, she interviewed those who became adult in the 1980s and 1990s and encountered through their eyes and mouths the new corporate-directed world of globalization, the web, post-nationalism, and the deregulation, downsizing, and privatization of much that Canadians once owned and controlled in common.

    MYRNA KOTASH
Duration: 00:16:47 Myrna Kostash, is an Edmonton-based writer who came of age philosophically and politically in the 1960s. Like many thinkers of her generation, she was committed to a kind of cultural nationalism which appears to have fallen on hard times. American cultural influences, globalization, the triumph of capitalism over Marxism, and various other developments have led others of her generation into a kind of inertia, if not despair. The Canada they know seems to be disappearing. And, so the blackened mantra goes, the generation which will eventually take the country's helm seem more preoccupied with MTV, surfing the Web and designer clothing. However, Myrna Kostash travelled the country talking with many under-35s and has come away from it all feeling more optimistic about Canada than she would have imagined. And she captures that optimism in her new book, "The Next Canada: In Search of Our Future Nation" (Mclelland and Stewart).

A Working Bibliography of Postcolonial Travel Writing
    Barbara Korte, with Kati Stammwitz
    The Project
While travel writing in Britain and the United States has received increased critical attention over the last decade, its postcolonial varieties have been practically unexplored - although a considerable body of texts already exists and although travel writers with a postcolonial background have been very productive over the last few years.
In a research project pursued for two years at Chemnitz University, we have investigated various aspects that appear to characterize postcolonial travel writing and would like to discuss them with anybody who has a serious research interest in this field.
We have defined travelogues or travel writing as texts which present, in a basically narrative form, an authentic journey which the writer has performed him/herself.
Compiling a body of texts in this area has proved difficult and time-consuming, as many texts are difficult to access and satisfactory bibliographical resources do not exist as yet. We have therefore decided to make this bibliography available as an aid to further research in this field. It is restricted to a selection of 20th-century travelogues with which we have worked/are still working, and a selection of secondary materials.

CCA National Conference Concludes, National Arts Awards Presented Ottawa December 16, 2002 "We have to dance on the curl of the wave" These were Hank Bull 's words, a part of his keynote address at the CCA's recently conducted national policy conference at the Winspear Centre in Edmonton on November 28th and 29th, 2002. "I believe that fundamental changes are going to happen to arts delivery and arts practice in the next 20 years," said Max Wyman , acting as moderator of the conference. "A diverse and imaginative cultural expression," he continued, "one that asserts the primacy of the human and the humane in the face of the dehumanizing forces of the modern world, is a fundamental component of the dreams and ideals of Canada The theme of the conference, which examined the changing nature of arts practices, was "When is Now : Synchronizing Arts Policy and Practice." Attendance was strong with approximately 130 people coming from across Canada to discuss some of the contemporary issues facing artists and arts administrators today. Among the participants were artists and arts administrators, both young and seasoned, policy makers, as well as a contingent of arts policy students.
