Writer at Trent
M Y R N A K O S T A S H* I have just completed a two-month visit at Trent University that was such a delight for me as a writer that I want to let TWUC members know about it in the event that Trent thinks about doing it again. "It" refers to the appointment of a writer ( moi , in this case; a couple of years ago it was Robert Bringhurst) as Ashley Fellow at one of the colleges at Trent. Ashley was an economist at the University of Toronto who was so impressed by Trent University's pedagogical verve that he endowed a fellowship that in fact works as a visitor-in-residence ( not a writer-in-residence). For two to three months' room and board and a modest stipend, the Fellow is asked to engage her/himself in some campus activities but is otherwise free to write. As expected, I was invited to give a few guest lectures (in Canadian Studies, Women's Studies, and Sociology classes). Additionally, rather than present public lectures, as my "engagement" with the Trent University and Peterborough communities I hosted three events. The first was a cabaret in a student pub that featured local musicians Joe Hall and Rev. Ken Ramsden, Toronto poet Este Spalding, and Peterborough/Toronto drag artist David Bateman. This was in fact the kickoff for the second event, a one-day symposium organized under the rubric

In this interview, Myrna Kostash discusses her political and intellectual
formation, including an examination of her experiences with her own
Ukrainian immigrant community in Edmonton, the American student movement in Seattle, Canadian nationalism and the New Left in Toronto, and the socialist women's movement. She also talks about her rethinking of the relationship of her Ukrainian history and Canadian nationalism in relation to the discourse of multiculuralism, her work in the Writers' Union of Canada, and her perspectives on the political reconfiguration in Eastern Europe and her recent writing.

Conference Rapporteur Myrna Kostash INTRODUCTION As rapporteur of the conference, assigned to listen as attentively as possible, to control the compulsion to jump up and add to the discussions and debates around me, and to give every point of view its fair due, I came away from the two days of the meeting very excited by the quality of the presentations and the interventions from the floor. Given the subtitle of the conference, I feared that the conversation would be dominated by techno-lust on the one hand and policy-wonkery on the other - or some unholy combination of the two. But my fears were groundless. What I witnessed for two days was the conversation of artists . With rare exceptions, the discussion was dominated by arts practitioners. Their dominance meant that issues were addressed with the full authority of the life experience of working artists and the undeniable passion of their convictions.

The other night the full moon rode high in the sky over the National Theatre, itself fully illuminated like a backdrop for the thundering Romanian rock band that was set up on a stage at the main intersection of the city. The occasion? I thought perhaps Hallowe'en. Yes, I know: we have Hallowe'en, Romanians have Vlad the Impaler, but I had seen a couple of witches and black-masked devils in the McDonald's I walked past earlier in the evening.
But, no, the occasion was far more prosaic: Microsoft was launching the new version of Windows
There was a respectable number of young people milling about, and cops, and balloon sellers, but not a mob.(Just as, last Sept 14, according to a magazine story here, in spite of the day having been proclaimed an official day of mourning in Romania with flags at half-mast and church bells tolling, only 1500 people showed up in that same square.) (I'm told by people here that the official approval of the war on Afghanistan hasn't got so much to do with its popularity as with the government's eagerness to be ready, aye ready, when the accession call from the European Union eventually comes.)
At dinner this week I had the good luck to meet the20-something Valentin Bottez (son of Monica Bottez, the organizer of the regional Canadian Studies conference that was held here Oct 26-28 and at which I gave a Plenary speech cum rant about the Next Canada -I always try to get in something about the War of 1812...but I digress). Valentin is studying history and, although he started out keen on Russian history he has now switched to a passion for archaeology of the Late Roman world, thanks to a summer job working on a dig on the Black Sea coast of a 4th century church. (In September he was working on a dig at the site of a Roman gold mine; he tells me that a Canadian mining company has the same idea - to dig for gold -right there where the archaeologists are racing to uncover as much as they can before the cowboys get to work.)

    Multilingual literary magazine Ana Olos:
MYRNA KOSTASH’S: IDENTITY AND WRITINGS T he adjectives "Ukrainian non-fiction prairie new-leftist Canadian nationalist", defining Myrna Kostash’s identity reproduce the title of an interview published in Canadian Literature , Spring 2002, by Margarert Fee, Sneja Gunew and Lisa Grekul, as part of a project, “Diaspora, Indigeneity, Ethnicity”, funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. The project is meant to study “contemprorary writer-intellectuals from Canada and Australia whose work reflect their sense of belonging “however uneasily to an ethnic or an indigenious community as well as to a wider nation”. (Preface) Reading the interview, one realizes that this is a quotation from one of Kostash’s answers and reflects the way the writer defined herself at the beginning of her career. But since these dimensions of her personality arise from her intellectual history, the present article intends to give a rear-view of her literary career whose thematic range is much wider than the dimensions of her own personality. Born in 1944, in Edmonton, Alberta, into a family of Ukrainian origin, Myrna Kostash studied Slavic languages and literatures at the universities of Alberta and Toronto. After her graduation she spent two years in Europe with odd jobs, then returned to Toronto in 1971. She had worked for four years as a free-lance magazine writer appearing mainly in
