Review of 'The Doomed Bridegroom A Memoir'.

BOOK REVIEWS Myrna Kostash's new book provides historical narratives via a personal journey The Doomed Bridegroom: A Memoir by Myrna Kostash. Edmonton: NeWest Press, 1998. 182 pp. by Luba Krekhovetsky Trudging through the snow-covered campus of the University of Alberta in the 1960s, a young Myrna Kostash dreamed of civil rights demonstrations and freedom marches. Her passion for political activism motivated a decades-long quest for a political ideal embodied in the form of the "rebel hero." Self-reflective, disarmingly honest and inherently political, Ms. Kostash's latest offering, "The Doomed Bridegroom: A Memoir," takes the reader on a personal journey through Greece, Ukraine, Slovenia, Poland, Serbia and back to Canada in search of the perfect love. It is not unusual for a writer to use a journey as a metaphor for the inner life of the protagonist; in fact, Ms. Kostash's previous book "Bloodlines: A Journey into Eastern Europe" (Douglas & McIntyre, 1993) chronicles her journey to the former Soviet Union on the eve of its demise. What distinguishes "The Doomed Bridegroom" from other tales of travel and self-discovery, however, is the intimate nature of her journey: it recounts the author's relationships with men. The landscapes of "The Doomed Bridegroom" are similar to those of "Bloodlines": the troubled histories and revolutionary movements of Central and Eastern Europe, or what Ms. Kostash terms the "other Europe." Some of the characters are also familiar: socialists, revolutionaries and dissident writers committed to resistance, mostly against Soviet imperialism. But this time these scenes are revisited by Ms. Kostash as a lover rather than as a writer and activist.

5. INTERVIEW: Myrna Kostash On Multiculturalism, Reconciliation (05/15/94)
myrna kostash on multiculturalism and reconciliation.
http://www.ukrweekly.com/Archive/1994/209418.shtml
INTERVIEW: Myrna Kostash on multiculturalism, reconciliation The following is the second part of an interview with Myrna Kostash, a Canadian writer of Ukrainian background whose term as chairman of the Canadian Writers' Union will expire on May 15th. In the past year, debate over Canada's multiculturalism policy has intensified, with some wishing to eliminate it entirely, and others claiming that it is not benefitting visible minorities in the country. Ms. Kostash's most recent book, "Bloodlines: A Journey Into Eastern Europe," (Vancouver: Douglas & McIntyre, 1993), has been met with critical acclaim and heated discussion in some circles. The hardback run sold out, and the paperback is available in bookstores in Canada and by contacting the publisher. Other works include "All of Baba's Children" (Edmonton: NeWest Press, 1977); "No Kidding: Inside the World of Teenage Girls" (Toronto: McClelland and Stewart, 1987); "Long Way From Home" (Toronto: Lorimar, 1980); the screen-play for the National Film Board production "Teach Me to Dance" (1978); and a number of works for the stage. A member of PEN International, the Writers' Guild of Alberta and an editorial member of numerous publications, Ms. Kostash has also taught journalism and writing at various institutions in Canada and the U.S. The interview was conducted in Toronto by Andrij Wynnyckyj.

By Myrna Kostash
"The Return of Economic Nationalism", Gordon Laxer, Parkland Post, Fall 1998. The students jostled each other through the lecture hall doorway, notebooks open and ready for note-taking, and hung on every word of this intellectual granddad. The New World Order?"Deceit, hypocrisy, and outright fraud:" Chomsky began, almost laconically. So called radical nationalism, the bane of business interests everywhere, he went on, is simply the belief that the “primary beneficiaries of a country’s resources are the people of that country.” A shudder of recognition in the hall. “Therefore, economic nationalism - the regulation and control of capital flow to allow governments to make social policies without fear of capital flight - must be stamped out by investors’ agreements like the NAFTA.” A groan, a hiss. Surely, I thought, as the students filed out practically radiating bliss, even if Chomsky’s argument were utopian, this was the catechism my generation would like to pass on, and not the mean an wizened presumption of Tom Courchene, economics professor at Queen’s University, that by early in the twenty-first century, "while a politic entity called Canada will exist, practically speaking it probably won’t matter."

A thunder of resurrection on the mountain

Smash your fists against despair,
biding within the copper mountain.

Vasyl Stus
Because I keep files about dissidents, especially those who were martyred in Soviet Ukraine, I cut his picture out. It was printed in a glossy English-language magazine, Ukraine , from Kyiv, mailed faithfully to me for months though I had no subscription. It shows a close-cropped, dark-haired man of about forty, with big ears, a strong jaw, and a dark, bright and mettlesome gaze straight into the camera. He's wearing a black turtleneck sweater and looks to me like a Ukrainian Marlon Brando from On the Waterfront I pin this up on the bulletin board above my desk. It's one of those portraits in which the eyes follow you as you move around the room. He stares at me, I stare at him.
