Picture created by Caitlin O'Mahoney April 1998 I BELIEVE LIFE GOES on," he says, "and that makes me a pessimist... what many people are unwilling to realize is that their daily life comes to them the way fiction does. They must imagine themselves in what they are going to do. They must make decisions in their lives - whether the man next door is a threat or not, whether they are in love or about to be betrayed by a lover, or whether they want to leave a relationship. And if so they will have to mobilize their energy. And that's how I think my fiction comes to them - not pre-judged, relatively un-pre- packed. You have to project yourself into it and you have to judge it, my characters, the way you judge people in your daily life."

Passing by - Book Review, by Kosinski, Jerzy N. From the Publisher From The Critics Publisher's Weekly
According to his widow, Polish emigre novelist Kosinski had been working on this collection of essays, lectures and fragments when he committed suicide in Manhattan in 1991. While the selections would be improved by contextualizing introductions, they portray a man who was impassioned about literature and who saw his role as confronting ``life's threatening encounters.'' He finds inspiration, he writes, from an intertwining of the Polish, Hasidic and American literary traditions, and considers America ``the last society which still modifies itself freely.'' He rails against the ``collectivism'' nourished by television and radio, and criticizes North American Jews for memorializing the Holocaust but not Jewish achievements. Other essays touch on his experiences learning polo, acting in the film Reds , living in New York City and visiting Poland in the late 1980s. Most interesting are his discussions of the original ideas behind The Painted Bird and the structure of Steps. (Nov.)

Jerzy Kosinski
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Jerzy Kosinski June 14 May 3 ) was born into a Jewish family in Lodz Poland . Unlike most of Jewish children in times of Holocaust , he survived under a forged identity in the family of Catholic Poles , in relatively safe and warm conditions. A Catholic priest had issued a forged baptism statement, as was a common practice in the Polish Catholic Church during World War II . He was reunited with his parents after the war and earned degrees in history and political science in Poland before coming to the United States in .In 1962, he married American steel heiress Mary Hayward Weir . Weir eventually died of cancer in 1968. Kosinski is perhaps best known for his novels The Painted Bird and Being There The Painted Bird has been implied to be based on his experiences during World War II. However it is now widely considered that the events depicted were fictional: that Kosinski did not for example wander the countryside of Eastern Europe during the war. The book rather shows his unfriendly feelings toward peasants and his complete ignorance about their life. He describes them using the same paint as anti-semitic books described Jews.

The haunting novels of Jerzy Kosinski reflect the troubled life of a man whose career was marred by the eccentricities and myths that he had cultivated. In a literary controversy as bizarre as any of his books, some critics attacked him as a fraud whose works were taken from other authors or written largely by editors he had hired, while others defended him as the victim of longtime efforts to discredit both his life and his art. Jerzy Nikodem Kosinski was born in Lodz , Poland, on June 14, 1933. He was a Jewish child who, sent away by his parents during World War II in order to escape Nazi brutality, wandered through villages throughout the war. Many of his physical and spiritual traumas provided material for his books. The Kosinski-Czaplinski Interviews
    Kosinski's Passions
Commentary by Edmond Darboski During the years 1988-1991 Czeslaw Czaplinski, a Polish born photographer who was on friendly terms with Jerzy Kosinski, conducted a series of interviews in the Polish language with the controversial author. It turned out to be the one (and only!) opportunity where Kosinski had a chance to talk at length about his interests. Acting against past precedent, he authorized the publication of these interviews. The book, KOSINSKI'S PASSIONS, was published in Poland in the Polish language (as PASJE JERZEGO KOSINSKIEGO) in 1993 and was an immediate smash hit, but American publishers - for some unknown reason - have shown only passing interest in the already completed translation. Certainly, James Park Sloan's biography "Jerzy Kosinski" broke no new ground in illuminating Kosinski's complicated character. Little more than a rehash of the same old stuff we've read elsewhere, larded with references to Jerzy's mother's "pendulous breasts" and speculation about a possible Oedipus complex, it hardly constitutes scholarly research. Meanwhile, the speculation goes on and Jerzy has been muffled up because no one will take a chance on publishing what could possibly be an original and interesting book.

All my father saw was what he wanted to see. All my life I've been hiding. I am curious about grownups, not children. I am going to put myself to sleep now for a bit longer than usual. Call the time Eternity. (his suicide note) It's not that you aren't likable. On the contrary. You are. It's just that one wonders if you haven't made a career out of being so likable. She was old and always bent over, as though she wanted to break herself in half but could not. Her long hair, never combed, had knotted itself into innumerable thick braids impossible to unravel. These she called elflocks. She hobbled around, leaning on a gnarled stick, muttering to herself in a language I could not understand. Her small withered face was covered with a net of wrinkles, and her skin was reddish brown like that on an overbaked apple. Take whatever you can from others, and when there is nothing left, forget about them.

He loved to tell outrageous lies, particularly to the rich, intellectual and famous. They were so eager to be entertained, he explained, that they willingly suspended disbelief, and they were so confident of their superiority that they deserved to be played for fools. "Court jester" to his powerful American friends, that's how Jerzy Kosinski sometimes referred to himself. Even the truths of Kosinski's life are astonishing in their variety and complexity. Though he was never the mute, brutalized child hero of "The Painted Bird," he probably really did escape being killed in Sharon Tate's house the night of the Manson murders because, according to James Park Sloan, he missed his plane to Los Angeles. A skilled photographer, Kosinski really was invited by the dying Nobel Prize-winning French biochemist Jacques Monod to document his final hours, although we are not told what Monod expected him to do with the photographs. And after arriving as a penniless foreigner to go to graduate school at Columbia, Kosinski really did live out the American dream, marrying a millionaire socialite (from whom he was subsequently divorced, and who later committed suicide), earning national awards and huge sums of money for his books and a screenplay, on the way achieving that greatest of dreams, to be a movie star, playing a small but important role role in "Reds."
