Gordon Korman Biography Gordon Korman was born October 23, 1963 in Montreal, Quebec in Canada. He wrote his first book, This Can't be Happening at Macdonald Hall Sixth Grade Nickname Game , where Mr. Huge was based on that 7th grade teacher. His first book found a home with Scholastic, who also published his next 20 or so books, including six more Bruno and Boots titles, and several award winning young adult titles, among them my personal favorite, Son of Interflux. Scholastic still publishes many of Gordon's titles, though Hyperion Press is also now printing some of Gordon's stories. Gordon eventually made one of his homes in New York City, where he studied film and film writing. While in New York, he also met his future wife, and they eventually married they now have two children. He now divides his time between Toronto, New York and Florida, has approximately 45 books to his credit, and is currently contracted for several more, including the very popular Island and Everest trilogies, and new young adult and childrens' titles. This covers most of the major points of Gordon's life, but for more information right from the source, check out Gordon's answers to the top ten questions he's asked during his school visits

Gordon Korman was born in Cote St. Luk, Montreal in 1963. He wrote his first book, "This Can't Be Happening At Macdonald Hall!" for a grade seven english project when he was only twelve years old! He had the desire to see it published, so he mailed it to the address on the bottom of an Arrow Book Club order form. One thing led to another, and soon Gordon's book was published. Gordon continued to write throughout high school. "I had a fairly normal childhood," he comments, "I would just write a book every summer." By the time he graduated, he had written five books for Scholastic. Gordon is a graduate of New York University's Dramatic Writing Program. He has published over twenty books for young adults, and currently travels around the world to speak at schools and conventions. He divides his time between New York, Toronto, and Pompano Beach, Florida and writes full time. Two projects which are very unique in Gordon's career are the books, "The D- Poems of Jeremy Bloom" and "The Last-Place Sports Poems of Jeremy Bloom". Gordon wrote these books of silly poetry with his mother, Bernice Korman, who ended up in the business after Gordon conned her into typing up his first book. Bernice currently lives with her husband in Thornhill, Ontario. Gordon's latest book is "The Chicken Doesn't Skate". The story is told from alternating first-person perspectives and is highly entertaining. The Chicken Doesn't Skate is currently available in Scholastic Hardcover.

Gordon Korman Gordon was born October 23, 1963 in Montreal, Quebec, and moved with his family to the Toronto area in 1971. He was 12 years old when he wrote his first book, This Can't Be Happening at MacDonald Hall , as a 7th grade English assignment. It was published by Scholastic Canada, and at age 14, Gordon Korman was a best-selling author. When he was 16, he won the Air Canada award for the most promising young author in Canada. Now more than 30 books later, he holds a Fine Arts degree from New York University (1985), with a major in Dramatic and Visual Writing, and a minor in Motion Picture and Television. Sales of his books now stand at the five million mark and are climbing. He's married to Michelle, a Grade 3 teacher in Long Island, N.Y. and has a son, Jay, the MVB (most valuable baby). Gordon is kept busy touring, writing, and answering his fan mail. His philosophy of life is "Keep on laughing." Author's reflections on the book: The idea for the book came about in a completely natural way. If you'll glance through some of my titles, you'll notice that I'm an incurable nicknamer! (Mr. Sturgeon, aka "The Fish", Quentin David becomes "Q-Dave", etc.) So the book started with the characters of Wiley and Jeff first - the two guys who took it upon themselves to nickname their world and everybody in it. The football part of it came because I was busy writing the series The Monday Night Football Club . I was football-nuts, so it was natural for me to make Mr. Hughes a football fan.

    Jan, 2004 by Paula Rohrlick
Hyperion. 213p. c2003. 0-7868-1957-X. $15.99. S In this homage to The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald High has a new student, Jake Garrett, who throws the best parties and is considered the coolest guy in town. He dresses like "he'd just waltzed off the pages of the J. Crew catalog," he drives a Beamer, and he gets off football snaps "like a cruise missile." Every guy wants to be invited to his bashes, and every girl wants to be with him, but he only wants drop-dead gorgeous Didi, the girlfriend of Todd, the school quarterback. Narrator Rick tells the tragic tale as Jake manages to gets together with the girl of his dreams, though she refuses to stop seeing Todd. When violence erupts at a dangerously over-the-top final party, Jake takes the fall for Didi. In the end he is exposed as a lovelorn poseur, a former math geek and term paper writer for cash who has remade his image and plotted for years to win the prize of Didi, only to see it all slip away. Korman, author of Son of the Mob, No More Dead Dogs, and other books for young readers, is an accomplished writer who succeeds in making this plot work in an updated context. The dialog is snappy, and there is humor as well as heartbreak. YAs will recognize the common high school types here and eat up the details of the wild parties. Be sure to bring this to the attention of English teachers, who might enjoy using it in a unit on The Great Gatsby, Paula Rohrlick, KLIATT
