Obasan Review Summary This story is narrated by Naomi, a sheltered and pampered child who is five years old when her life is drastically changed by the events at Pearl Harbor and the Second World War. As a Japanese Canadian, Naomi is separated from her parents, persecuted and eventually placed in an internment camp – common practice in Canada during WWII. The one bright spot in Naomi's life is her Aunt Obasan, her protector and caregiver after she is separated from her parents.
It is only after Naomi grows up that she is able to face the hardship of her past. This novel is a striking account of one of the worst manifestations of racism in Canada's history.

I was ashamed to be a Canadian when I think back to how the Japanese Canadians were treated by their own government during the Second World War. After reading "Itsuka", I feel renewed faith. The story is poetically written, moving and uplifting. It's definitely one of those books that I'd read more than once.

Obasan

Obasan is a fictional account of what actions the Canadian government took to control Japanese-Canadians during WWII. Kogawa tells an undeniably historical story about the internment of Japanese-Canadians and its effect on families. She chronicles the journey of a young Japanese-Canadian as she confronts and accepts her past. Kogawa uses a unique point of view, extended metaphors, and official as well as personal documents and letters to tell her story. Obasan is told through the eyes of Naom...

Have you ever felt like an outcast?
Joy Kogawa
Joy Kogawa is an understated author whose powerful story on the Japanese internment in Canada called "Obasan" won her numerous awards. She is a Japanese activist whose goal is to alert Canadians on the history of discrimination that we have never truly realized. Her own experiences of discrimination during World War Two are the basis of her story.
Kogawa has devoted a great deal of her life trying to educate Canada about what happened during and after the Second World War. She is also helping other Japanese Canadians seek compensation from the Canadian Government
She believes that although the intentions of women's groups are amazing, the exclusivity of some can hinder their effectiveness.
Joy's main struggle in life and the fuel to her fight against discrimination is her own internship during World War Two. Joy and her family had to leave their home and all their possessions and live in internment camps until the war was over. Moreover, once the war was over, the government would not even return their property, forcing them to start their lives all over again.
Emotionally, the camp affected her deeply, and Joy began rejecting her Japanese self by refusing to speak the language, and by not associating with other Japanese people or Japanese cultures. All of that changed, however, after she came across the matrial of Muriel Kitagawa in the Public Archives. It was this material that caused Kogawa to realize the reality of what happened to her and other Japanese Canadians. Not only that, but her passion and need to write at that time, steered her into writing about her traumatic experiences in the internship, thus helping her overcome the anguish felt whenever she thought about it.

Editorial Review
From 500 Great Books by Women When Naomi was a young child living in Vancouver, British Columbia, her mother left to visit relatives in Japan. Soon after, the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor. Naomi's mother was not allowed to return and Naomi's family was "relocated" by the Canadian government. When Obasan begins, Naomi is thirty-five, a woman determined to ignore her past. But the death of the man who helped raise her and her aunt's who refusal to forgive the Canadian government force Naomi to remember. review by Erica Bauermeister
About the Author
Joy Kogawa is a gifted poet and writer. She is also Nisei, the child of Japanese immigrant parents. OBASAN, her first novel, recovers the truth about what happened to her, her family and her people in Canada during WW II. Winner of the Before Columbus Foundation's 1982 prize, OBASAN reminds us of the indignities and injustice we visited on our loyal Japanese-American citizens.

Customer Reviews
Average customer rating: a beautiful and emotional book Joy Kogawa explained very clearly what happened to the Japanese people in Canada during WW 2. The story was very well, and you could still follow all the things that happened to the people. Everything becomes very clear. The story is told through the eyes of Naomi Nakane, the main character, who wants to find out what happened to the past, the time when the Japanese people were haunted down. She kind of begins telling the story from when she was 5 and it all started. Her mother had to leave Canada and go to Japan. Until she was an adult, Naomi didn't find out why her mom never came back and why she never got the letters she wrote.
