Etheridge Knight (1931-1991)
Biography Etheridge Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1931. He dropped out of school at the age of sixteen and joined the military. While serving in Korea, he acquired a drug habit that followed him back to the states in 1951. In 1960, he was arrested for robbery and sentenced to eight years in the Indiana State Prison. It was here that Knight began writing poetry. He corresponded with other African American poets of the time like Dudley Randall and Gwendolyn Brooks. He published his first book of poetry, Poems From Prison (1968), while he was still incarcerated. His book was a success and afterward he became deeply involved in the Black Arts Movement. Knight's other books and presentations were both popular and critically acclaimed, and throughout his career he received honors from the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Poetry Society of America. He was also one of five Tennessee writers featured in the Memphis Public Library's Talking Leaves video series. Knight earned a bachelor's degree in American poetry and criminal justice from Martin Center University in Indianapolis in 1990, but only one year later in 1991, he died of lung cancer.

He was one of seven children in a poor family, and only completed a ninth-grade education. Spending many of his adolescent years working in pool halls, bars, and juke joints, he mastered the art of "telling toasts". Toasts are long narrative poems coming from an oral tradition which are performed from memory and with spirit. This environment honed his poetic experience, however, it also introduced him to drugs. He became addicted to drugs at an early age. He joined the U.S. Army, serving as a medical technician in the Korean War. Arrested in Indianapolis for stealing a purse in 1960, Knight was imprisoned for eight years. He recounts this experience in verse in Poems from Prison and in prose in the anthology Black Voices from Prison (1970; originally published two years earlier in Italian as

Etheridge Knight On this date we remember the birth of Etheridge Knight in 1931. He was an African-American poet.
Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi and grew up in Paducah, Kentucky. He dropped out of high school, became addicted to drugs, and joined the U.S. Army, serving as a medical technician in the Korean War. Arrested for robbery in 1960, Knight was imprisoned for eight years. There he emerged as a strong voice of the Black aesthetic movement with his first volume of verse, Poems from Prison (1968).
His experience was also recounted with prose in the anthology Black Voices from Prison (1970); originally published two years earlier in Italian as Voce negre dal carcere. After his release from prison, Knight taught at various universities and contributed to several magazines, working for two years as an editor of Motive and as a contributing editor of New Letters (1974). He experimented with rhythmic forms of punctuation in Belly Song and Other Poems (1973), which addressed the themes of ancestry, racism, and love. In Born of a Woman (1980), a work that weighs personal suffering with affirmation, he introduced the concept of the poet as a "meddler" who forms a trinity with the poem and the reader.
Much of his verse was collected in The Essential Etheridge Knight (1986). His poetry combined the energy and audacity of African-American "toasts" (long verses that were recited in a mixture of street slang, specialized argot, and obscenities) with a concern for freedom from oppression. He died March 10, 1991 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Embittered by his lengthy prison sentence, which he felt was unjust and racist in nature, Knight became rebellious, hostile, and belligerent during his first year of incarceration. However, the Autobiography of Malcolm X and other prison works influenced him to turn to writing in order to liberate his soul. As Knight once stated: “I died in Korea from a shrapnel wound and narcotics resurrected me. I died in 1960 from a prison sentence and poetry brought me back to life.”
By drawing from his early experiences as a teller of toasts, Knight developed his verse into a transcribed-oral poetry of considerable power. His earlier poems, “The Idea of Ancestry,” “The Violent Space,” “Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane,” and “He Sees Through Stone,” were so effective that Broadside publisher-poet Dudley Randall published Knight’s first volume of verse, Poems From Prison
