On Etheridge Knight's Poetry Joyce Ann Joyce Any veteran reader of Etheridge Knight's poetry or anyone who has heard him read will have his or her favorite poems such as those that he read most frequently, which include "Hard Rock Returns to Prison from the Hospital for the Criminal Insane," "The Violent Space," "It Was a Funky Deal," and "Dark Prophecy: I Sing of Shine" as we as some of the poems I discussed above. His skilled use of the Black vernacular also manifests itself in the many haiku poems of which he was quite fond. Using this brief form that demanded precision to hone his skill, Knight produced poetry that was humorous, urbane or sophisticated, colloquial, historical, political, musical, rhythmical, and spiritual. from "The Poetry of Etheridge Knight: A Reflection of an African Philosophical/Aesthetic Worldview." Add to a Notebook Etheridge Knight Etheridge Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi, in 1931. Although he dropped out of school at age sixteen (as soon as he was old enough to join the army), his education in the uses and joys of language continued as he explored the world of juke joints, pool halls, and underground poker games. He began to master the art of the toast, a form of long, improvised, humorous poetry that dates back to the 19th century and has its roots in African storytelling. From 1947 to 1951, Knight served in the U.S. Army in Korea, and returning with a shrapnel wound that caused him to fall deeper into a drug addiction that had begun during his service. In 1960 he was arrested for robbery and sentenced to eight years in the Indiana State Prison. During this time he began writing poetry, and he corresponded with and received visits from such established African American literary figures as Dudley Randall and Gwendolyn Brooks . Dudley Randall's Broadside Press published Poems from Prison (1968), Etheridge Knight's first book, one year before he was released from prison.

Students often lack the knowledge of the new black aesthetic, the black oral tradition, and contemporary black poetry, in general. I lecture on major twentieth-century black poets and literary movements. In addition, I provide supplementary research articles, primarily from BALF Black American Literature Forum ) and CLA College Language Association Since Knight has read his poems on various college campuses throughout the country, I use tapes of his poetry readings. I also read his poetry aloud and invite students to do likewise, since his punctuation guides the reader easily through the oral poems. Students, black and white, identify with the intense pain, loneliness, frustration, and deep sense of isolation Knight expresses in his prison poetry. They often compare their own sense of isolation, frustration, and depression as college students with his institutional experience. Students often ask the following questions: 1. Why haven't they been previously exposed to this significant poet and to the new black aesthetic?

from Etheridge Knight's "A Poem for 3rd World Brothers" From 1960-1961, Etheridge Knight served a prison sentence for robbery. While in prison, Knight mastered the art of the toast. He honed his talents and learned from outsiders how to become a better poet. Knight was introduced to poet Gwendolyn Brooks who mentored him in his first published work, Poems from Prison (1968). It is in prison he found his audience. Knight would use fellow inmates, prison guards, whomever he could get to listen to his poetry. He even began writing poetry on behalf of his fellow inmates for their spouses or girlfriends. Black Voices from Prison Belly Song and Other Poems (1973), and

Etheridge Knight (1933-1991) was born in Corinth, Mississippi, attended two years of public high school in Kentucky, and served in the U.S. Army from 1948 to 1951. Convicted on a robbery charge and sentenced in 1960 to twenty years in Indiana State Prison, he discovered poetry; his first collection is entitled Poems from Prison (1968). Knight was paroled after eight years. From 1968 to 1971 he was poet-in-residence at several universities. An important African American voice in the 1960s and 1970s, Knight rejected the American and European esthetic tradition, arguing that "the red of this esthetic rose got its color from the blood of black slaves, exterminated Indians, napalmed Vietnamese children." His collection Belly Song and Other Poems was nominated for the National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize in 1973. His awards include National Endowment for the Arts and Guggenheim grants, and the 1987 American Book Award for

Knight: The People's Poet By Amy Lifson "Etheridge Knight had been saved by poetry," wrote fellow poet Yusef Komunyakaa about the black veteran and convict who was reborn as a poet. Komunyakaa is one of the lecturers in a series at Butler University honoring Knight, an Indianapolis poet who died in 1991 at the age of seventy. Knight's poetry was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and helped define the modern black literary movement of the sixties. Upcoming speakers are poet Mari Evans on February 9, Komunyakaa on March 19, and Henry Louis Gates on April 16. Knight began writing poetry while he was in prison, serving a seven-year sentence for robbery. He was twenty-nine years old when he was sent to prison. His poetry grew out of the African- American tradition called "toasts"long, recited poems that describe street life, usually in rhyming couplets. In an interview for the Colorado Review in 1987, Knight described his literary birth. "I first began to define myself as a poet in prison. Guys in the joint were my first primary audience. I was sending poems to guys in the joint before I started sending them anyplace else. If you can play a guitar or paint or say poems, you have an audience. And you get affirmed. I got a lot of support. Guys thought I functioned like a village scribe. On weekends, they would come to me and bring their letters, and I was supposed to be a poet so they'd have me write letters to their wives and sweethearts. You got to do a lot of relating if you're going to do

Completed by: Barbara Shirk, November, 1987 Biographical Sketch Etheridge Knight was born in Corinth, Mississippi on April 19, 1931. He was the son of Etheridge "BuShie" and Belzora Cozart Knight. He grew up in Paducah, Kentucky with four sisters and two brothers. He quit school after the eighth grade and spent his teenage years learning various toasts (long narrative poems in rhyming couplets) from men in the streets, poolrooms, and bars. He was physically abused by his father and ran away from home many times; but, by the age of 17, he left home for good. He joined the army in 1947 and served until 1951. By 1949, his family was living in Indianapolis, Indiana. While in the army, he was sent to Korea where he saw active duty as a medical technician and where he suffered a "psyche/wound" and subsequently became hooked on drugs.
