B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) English short-story writer, novelist and poet, who celebrated the heroism of British colonial soldiers in India and Burma. "It is true that Mr Kipling shouts, 'Hurrah for the Empire!' and puts out his tongue at her enemies," Virginia Woof "O thirty million English that babble of England's might,
Behold there are twenty heroes who lack their food to-night;
Our children's children are lisping to "honor the charge they made - "
And we leave to the streets and the workhouse the charge of the Light Brigade!"

(from 'The Last of the Light Brigade', 1891) Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, where his father, John Lockwood Kipling, was an arts and crafts teacher at the Jeejeebhoy School of Art. His mother, the former Alice Macdonald, was a sister-in-law of the painter Edward Burne-Jones. India was at that time ruled by the British. Ruddy, as Kipling was affectionally called, was brought up by an ayah , who taught him Hidustani as his first language.

Rudyard Kipling a master work of imperialism . . . a rich and absolutely fascinating, but nevertheless profoundly embarrassing novel. (Said)
Kipling the Imperialist
Few modern English readers could enjoy Rudyard Kipling's Kim in the way Kipling intended it to be enjoyed. Kipling was an Imperialist, and Kim embodies attitudes towards British rule in India which these days are wholly unacceptable and unpalatable. Kipling believed it was right and proper for Britain to 'own' India and rule its people, and the possibility that this position might be questionable never seems to have crossed his mind. At the time he was writing there was a considerable ferment of revolt among Indians against British rule, and yet, as Said has shown, at points in Kim when he could have acknowledged this Kipling dismisses it. This is particularly apparent when in Chapter 3 he has an old soldier comment on the Great Mutiny of 1857, dismissing it as 'madness':

The Jungle Book and Cub Scouting
Baden-Powell, the founder of Scouting, based Cub Scouting on one of the stories in Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book . It was called "Mowgli's Brothers." We know it as "The Story of Akela and Mowgli." A copy of part of the story is in the Wolf Cub Scout Book. The story is continued in the Bear Cub Scout Book. A part of the story is also in the Cub Scout Leader Book. (The Jungle Book and other Rudyard Kipling books are described at the Penguin Books website.)
Rudyard Kipling BSA Cub Scouting has drawn upon the adventure and lore of the Native American, just as Seton's Native American lore influenced Boy Scouting; but a strong influence from Kipling's Jungle Book still remains. The words "Law of the Pack," "Akela," "Wolf Cub," " Grand Howl,""den," and "pack" all come from the Jungle Book . The gold and silver arrows, Webelos, and Arrow of Light are taken from our Native American heritage.

Corner of Rudyard Lake - early 1900's

Rudyard lake was an extremely popular tourist attraction at the turn of the last century, and as such became known as the "Blackpool of the Potteries". Rudyard Kipling, the famous author, was named after Rudyard Lake.
Rudyard lake is an artificial reservoir two miles long and a quarter of a mile wide built in 1831 to feed the Macclesfield canal. Rudyard Kipling was named after the lake as a result of his parents meeting there in 1863. Rudyard is a small village which is between Stoke-on-Trent and the moorlands town of Leek and is probably most famous for giving its name to Rudyard Kipling. Kipling’s parents fell in love with Rudyard so much during their courtship that they decided to name their son Rudyard.

Look at him cutting it cur to the bone!"

What did he carry and how was he ridden?
Maybe they used him too much at the start.

They shut the road through the woods
    Seventy years ago.
Weather and rain have undone it again,
And now you would never know
There was once a road through the woods Before they planted the trees. It is underneath the coppice and heath And the thin anemones. Only the keeper sees That, where the ring-dove broods, And the badgers roll at ease, There was once a road through the woods. Yet, if you enter the woods Of a summer evening late, When the night-air cools on the trout ringed pools Where the otter whistles his mate, (They fear not men in the woods, Because they see so few.) You will hear the beat of a horse's feet And the swish of a skirt in the dew

With The Night Mail
By Rudyard Kipling (1905)
A Story of 2000 AD
(Together with extracts from the magazine in which it appeared) Index to illustrations
AT nine o'clock of a gusty winter night I stood on the lower stages of one of the G.P.O. outward mail towers. My purpose was a run to Quebec in 'Postal Packet 162 or such other as may be appointed': and the Postmaster-General himself countersigned the order. This talisman opened all doors, even those in the despatching-caisson at the foot of the tower, where they were delivering the sorted Continental mail. The bags lay packed close as herrings in the long grey underbodies which our G.P.O. still calls ' coaches.' Five such Coaches were filled as I watched, and were shot up the guides to be locked on to their waiting packets three hundred feet nearer the stars. From the despatching-caisson I was conducted by a courteous and wonderfully learned official Mr. L. L. Geary, Second Despatcher of the Western Route to the Captains' Room (this wakes an echo of old romance), where the mail captains come on for their turn of duty. He introduces me to the Captain of '162' Captain Purnall, and his relief, Captain Hodgson. The one is small and dark; the other large and red; but each has the brooding sheathed glance characteristic of eagles and aeronauts. You can see it in the pictures of our racing professionals, from L. V. Rautsch to little Ada Warrleigh that fathomless abstraction of eyes habitually turned through naked space.
