Laurier House National Historic Site of Canada
Laurier House commemorates two of Canada's most notable prime ministers, Sir Wilfrid Laurier and the Rt. Hon. William Lyon Mackenzie King. For over fifty years, from 1897 to 1948, the house occupied a central position in the political life of Canada, as the place of residence of Laurier and, after his death, of Mackenzie King. King bequeathed the house to the "Government and people of Canada" in the belief that future generations would be interested in the place where they lived, where they entertained dignitaries and politicians, and where they often conducted the business of the country.

WILLIAM I 'THE CONQUEROR' (r. 1066-1087)
Born around 1028, William was the illegitimate son of Duke Robert I of Normandy, and Herleve (also known as Arlette), daughter of a tanner in Falaise. Known as 'William the Bastard' to his contemporaries, his illegitimacy shaped his career when he was young. On his father's death in 1035, William was recognised by his family as the heir - an exception to the general rule that illegitimacy barred succession. His great uncle looked after the Duchy during William's minority, and his overlord, King Henry I of France, knighted him at the age of 15. From 1047 onwards, William successfully dealt with rebellion inside Normandy involving his kinsmen and threats from neighbouring nobles, including attempted invasions by his former ally King Henry I of France in 1054 (the French forces were defeated at the Battle of Mortemer) and 1057. William's military successes and reputation helped him to negotiate his marriage to Mathilda, daughter of Count Baldwin V of Flanders. At the time of his invasion of England, William was a very experienced and ruthless military commander, ruler and administrator who had unified Normandy and inspired fear and respect outside his duchy. William's claim to the English throne was based on his assertion that, in 1051, Edward the Confessor had promised him the throne (he was a distant cousin) and that Harold II - having sworn in 1064 to uphold William's right to succeed to that throne - was therefore a usurper. Furthermore, William had the support of Emperor Henry IV and papal approval. William took seven months to prepare his invasion force, using some 600 transport ships to carry around 7,000 men (including 2,000-3,000 cavalry) across the Channel. On 28 September 1066, with a favourable wind, William landed unopposed at Pevensey and, within a few days, raised fortifications at Hastings. Having defeated an earlier invasion by the King of Norway at the Battle of Stamford Bridge near York in late September, Harold undertook a forced march south, covering 250 miles in some nine days to meet the new threat, gathering inexperienced reinforcements to replenish his exhausted veterans as he marched.

131. William Rufus De Vane King ~ Gay Veep
william Rufus king, Vice President of the United States and homosexual lover of President James Buchanan.
http://www.geocities.com/boybluetoo/rufey.html
William Rufus de Vane King
Much of American history has been suppressed, especially the scandalous parts . Because boyblue considers those the only parts worth knowing, he feels duty bound to set the record straight...well, sort of straight. You may call it smut. boyblue considers it La History, like the story of the decades long love affair of Prez James Buchanan and a future Veep, William Rufus de Vane King, the queen of Alabama. Now we're not talking just good buddies here, sweetie, we're talking major humping for twenty years.
This ultimate power duo would have done it in the Lincoln bed but Abe hadn't moved in yet. He was still out in Illinois chopping logs and sleeping every night with John Speed, his knock out lawyer buddy.
Tuberculosis whisked away the dearly beloved Veep before Ol' Bucky, as Jamie Buchanan was known, took over the White House. So the prez never got to carry his truly beloved and the future Veep across the threshhold up to the legendary Lincoln bedroom as the prototypal couple for Rhett and Scahlett. Never mind that the Lincoln bedroom didn't exist yet. Some other knowledgeable purveyors of smut believe that when Ol' Bucky handed the house keys over to Abe Lincoln when he moved out of the White House that it was one queen turning over the keys to another. Of course boyblue believes that too. He makes it an ironclad rule to believe all the dirt about everybody. It's simply the only way to monger scandal reliably.

Preface
The subject of this essay will probably seem strange, from one point of view or another, to most readers. For start, it advocates a kind of socialist economic organization that is anti-government. As most people use the term "socialism," that would seem to be a contradiction in terms. In order to find the basic ideas of anti-government socialism, we have to go back to the period before the Russian Revolution of 1917, when some schools of socialist thought were quite close to anarchism. Guild Socialism was one of these. If that doesn't bother you, and some economic jargon about labor-managed enterprises sounds natural to you, then you can skip this preface without missing anything. Nevertheless, as I reread the paper that follows, I realize that it is not really a very good introduction to Guild Socialism. (It wasn't written to be an introduction to those ideas, but it is the nearest thing to it that I have in my files). My purpose in this fairly extensive preface is to fill in some of those blanks and to explain "where I am coming from." The Guild Socialists were active mostly in Britain in about 1890-1920. Their idea was that each workplace should be a more or less sovereign political jurisdiction and a democratic one, so that the supervisors would be elected by the people they supervise and the directors of the company be elected on a basis of one person, one vote. A workplace is a place where a group of people work together to produce some distinct good or service for sale or for the use of society. Most workplaces are small by political standards, and "workplace" implies a particular locality, not a world-wide financial empire. In making the workplace a basic political jurisdiction, the Guild Socialists linked themselves with others who wanted politics "closer to the people" in small, decentralized political units: anarchists and anarcho-syndicalists, many Christian Socialists and cooperators.

Woodside is the boyhood home of William Lyon Mackenzie King, Canada's longest-serving Prime Minister. The house has been restored to the Victorian style of the 1890s. The importance of this residence is best reflected in King’s own words: "The years that left the most abiding of all impressions and most in the way of family associations were those lived at Woodside."

Prince William
William of Wales
Prince William Arthur Philip Louis was born on June 21, 1982 at St Mary's Hospital in London. From the start his parents, the Prince and Princess of Wales, tried to give him as normal a life as possible. He was the first heir to the British throne to be born in a hospital, the first to wear disposable diapers, and the first to attend nursery school. Of course, Prince William's childhood was anything but typical. At the age of five he told friends that he wasn't allowed to know the name of his school "for security reasons." He can't fly in the same plane as his father because an accident might take the lives of two future kings. Wherever Prince William goes, bodyguards (and photographers) are not far behind. Prince William has one sibling, his brother Harry, who was born in 1984. It's said that they get along well together, and that William is very protective of his brother. In fact, William is said to get along well with everyone. His father had trouble fitting in at school and was cruelly hazed, but Prince William has always been popular with his classmates. His first school was Mrs. Mynors's Nursery School in London, which he attended for two years. Then he spent three years at Wetherby School, also in London. He proved to be good at reading, spelling and swimming (a sport his mother excelled at during her school years). At first Prince William was a rambunctious little boy. The media gleefully reported his every misbehavior, from flushing his father's shoes down the toilet to fighting with a flower girl at his uncle Andrew's wedding. As he grew older he became more quiet and thoughtful. "That child is a deep thinker,"

Given in 1878; located in House connecting corridor, 2nd floor. William King was born on February 9, 1768, in Scarboro, Maine, then still part of Massachusetts. His formal education was limited, ending at the age of 13. An enterprising nature compensated for his lack of schooling. Beginning work in a Topsham sawmill, he became the largest ship owner in Maine and a successful merchant. King also owned extensive real estate, was a principal owner of Maine's first cotton mill in Brunswick, and was a founder and president of Bath's first bank. Active in local politics beginning in 1795, he served in Massachusetts General Court, representing Topsham in 1795 and 1799 and Bath in 1804. He served twice as state senator for Lincoln County, from 1807 to 1811 and 1818 to 1819. During the War of 1812 he served as major general in the militia and provided recruiting assistance as a colonel in the United States Army. As a major shipper, he directed much of his attention to protecting the coastal and marine trade. In 1813, King began the effort for which he is best remembered. Residents of Maine had suffered hardships during the war and petitioned Massachusetts for separation. King worked for seven years and statehood for Maine was granted in 1820.

Liberal "It is what we prevent, rather than what we do that counts most in Government." Mackenzie King, August 26 1936 Private Life Did You Know? King had an odd hobby.
