William the Conqueror
c. 1028-1087 Military Leader
King
Britain ...
France
Also known as William of Normandy and William the Bastard, King William I of England was the illegitimate son of Duke Robert of Normandy, France. Though his blood claim to the throne of England was slim, he set his sights on the land once governed by his cousin, Edward the Confessor , and claimed the old king had named him his heir. In October of 1066, William the Conqueror successfully invaded England and defeated Harold Godwinson to win the crown. As King of England William initiated or oversaw numerous changes, including an extensive plan of castle-building and a more rigidly structured system of feudal government than England had previously known. The Anglo-Saxon population was ruled primarily by William's Norman comrades, resulting in a gulf between two classes that took centuries to shrink. One of King William's most significant acts was to comission the Domesday Survey, which catalogued the population of England and to this day serves as useful data for the historian. William also ordered the building of the Tower of London and Battle Abbey.

The war saw attacks by France and its native allies on British frontier settlements. The British failed to seize Quebec , and the French commander there attacked the British-held coast. The Treaty of Ryswick in 1697 was supposed to end the war, but peace did not last long, and shortly the colonies were embroiled in the next of the French and Indian Wars, Queen Anne's War

On May 14, 2003, the Virginia Marine Resources Commission voted, 6-2, against building a water-intake pipe on the Mattaponi River that would feed a 12.2-billion-gallon reservoir by 2020. At this time, the U.S. Arrmy Corps of Engineers is unable comment on denial of the King William Reservoir permit because we have not seen the Virginia Marine Resources Commission decision or hearing record. Twenty years after he received his undergraduate degree from the College of William and Mary, nationally known comedian Jon Stewart returned to his alma mater with some serious advice for 2004 graduates. “Today is the day you enter the real world, and I should give you a few pointers on what it is,” said Stewart, a member of the Class of 1984 and host and executive producer of Comedy Central’s fake newscast “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. “It’s actually not that different from the environment here.” “The biggest difference is you will now be paying for things, and the real world is not surrounded by a three-foot brick wall,” he joked. “And the real world is not a restoration. If you see people in the real world making bricks from straw and water, those people aren’t Colonial re-enactors. They are poor. Help them.” Roughly 13,000 people packed into William and Mary Hall to see Stewart, who has become a cultural icon when it comes to political satire and projecting comical criticism on everyone from members of the media to world leaders. Stewart did not disappoint an enthusiastic crowd.

FRtR Documents King William of England Addresses Parliament
King William of England Addresses Parliament
on the French Question, (31 December 1701)
Quote Context Gentlemen of the House of Commons; I do recommend these matters to you with that concern and earnestness, which their importance requires. At the same time I cannot but press you to take care of the public credit, which cannot be preserved but by keeping sacred that maxim, that they shall never be losers, who trust to a Parliamentary security. It is always with regret, when I do ask aids of my people; but you will observe, that I desire nothing, which relates to any personal expence of mine; I am only pressing you to do all you can for your own safety and honour, at so critical and dangerous a time; and am willing, that what is given, should be wholly appropriated to the purposes for which it is intended.... I should think it as great a blessing as could befall England, if I could observe you as much inclined to lay aside those unhappy fatal animosities, which divide and weaken you, as I am disposed to make all my subjects safe and easy as to any, even the highest offences, committed against me. Let me conjure you to disappoint the only hopes of our enemies by your unanimity. I have shewn, and will always shew, how desirous I am to be the common father of all my people. Do you, in like manner, lay aside parties and divisions. Let there be no other distinction heard of amongst us for the future, but of those, who are for the Protestant Religion, and the present establishment, and of those, who mean a Popish Prince, and a French government. I will only add this; if you do in good earnest desire to see England hold the balance of Europe, and to be indeed at the head of the Protestant interest, it will appear by your right improving the present opportunity.
