King Stephen (1135-54 AD)
Born: c.1096
Died: Parents: Stephen, Count of Blois, and Adela (daughter of William the Conqueror) Significant Siblings: Henry (Bishop of Winchester) Spouse: Matilda of Boulogne Significant Offspring: Eustace, Mary, William Contemporaries: Matilda (daughter of Henry I); Robert, Earl of Gloucester (illegitimate son of Henry I); Geoffrey of Anjou Stephen was the grandson of William the Conqueror and about half-dozen years older than his cousin and rival for the throne, Matilda (daughter of Henry I). After his father's death in 1102, Stephen was raised by his uncle, Henry I. Henry was genuinely fond of Stephen, and granted his nephew estates on both sides of the English Channel. By 1130, Stephen was the richest man in England and Normandy. Stephen's reign was one of the darkest chapters in English history. He was basically a good man - well respected by the barons and closely tied to the church - but possessed a conciliatory character and limited scope of kingship. Stephen had promised to recognize his cousin Matilda as lawful heir, but like many of the English/Norman nobles, was unwilling to yield the crown to a woman. He received recognition as king by the papacy through the machinations of his brother Henry of Blois, Bishop of Winchester, and gathered support from the barons. Matilda was in Anjou at the time of Henry's death and Stephen, in a rare exhibition of resolve, crossed the Channel and was crowned king by the citizens of London on December 22, 1135.

HENRY of HUNTINGDON
King Stephen's Reign The period following the death of Henry I in 1135 and prior to the rule of Henry II were somewhat chaotic in England, dominated by the struggle between King Stephen and his cousin, the Empress Matilda, who was the daughter of Henry I and the mother of Henry II. Local nobility used the conflict to usurp power in many areas, taking advantage of the lack of a strong monarch. The period is discussed in the chronicle of Henry, Archdeacon of Huntingdon, (c.1080-1160). At this period England was in a very disturbed state; on the one hand, the king and those who took his part grievously oppressed the people, on the other frequent turmoils were raised by the Earl of Gloucester, and, what with the tyranny of the one, and the turbulence of the other, there was universal turmoil and desolation. Some, for whom their country had lost its charms, chose rather to make their abode in foreign lands; others drew to the churches for protection, and constructing mean hovels in their precincts, passed their days in fear and trouble.
Food being scarce, for there was a dreadful famine throughout England, some of the people disgustingly devoured the flesh of dogs and horses; others appeased their insatiable hunger with the garbage of uncooked herbs and roots; many, in all parts, sunk under the severity of the famine and died in heaps; others with their whole families went sorrowfully into voluntary banishment and disappeared. There were seen famous cities deserted and depopulated by the death of the inhabitants of every age and sex, and fields white for the harvest, for it was near the season of autumn, but none to gather it, all having been struck down by the famine.

King Stephen (c.1097 - 1154)
Also called Stephen of Blois, he usurped the throne but failed to consolidate his power during the ensuing civil strife. He was raised up by his uncle, Henry I. Although he and other nobles pledged to support Henry's daughter, Matilda, as successor to the throne, there was widespread unhappiness at the thought of a woman ruler. Consequently, after Henry I died in December 1135, the leading lords and bishops welcomed Stephen as the new king. Yet Stephen was not a natural leader, rapidly making concessions that exposed his weakness. He bought the support of Robert of Gloucester and appointed vast numbers of new earls, an expensive act that brought little reward. But he alienated his nobles with his desperate measures to build support and with the lawlessness of his Flemish mercenaries. In 1138, Matilda's half brother, Robert, Earl of Gloucester, took up arms on Matilda's behalf. Early victories for Stephen faded when he lost the support of the church. Seizing her opportunity, Matilda invaded England in September 1139. With foolish chivalry, Stephen had Matilda escorted to Bristol, whereupon she proceeded to take control of western England. Early in 1141 the Angevins captured Stephen in a battle at Lincoln. In November he was exchanged for Gloucester, who had been captured by forces loyal to the king. Over time, Stephen gained the upper hand and in 1148 Matilda left England.

Author Extraordinaire Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine in 1947, the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. Part of his childhood was spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family lived at the time, and then in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, he went to Durham, Maine, to live with his mother. He graduated from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, with a B.S. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. King met his future wife, Tabitha Spruce, at the Fogler Library where they both worked. They were married in January of 1971. Stephen made his first short story sale to a mass market men's magazine shortly after his graduation from the University. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many of these were later gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies. Carrie for publication. A major paperback sale was soon to provide him with the means to leave teaching and write full-time. Stephen moved his family to southern Maine at the end of the summer of 1973. That winter, he wrote his next hit

King Stephen and Matilda of Boulogne
by Teresa Eckford This couple is by no means conventional, yet they have always struck me as devoted to one another in a time of strife and treachery. I hope you enjoy their story. King Stephen has never been acknowledged as one of England's most appealing kings. He usurped the throne from his cousin, Maud, after swearing an oath to support her, and was ineffectual in his rule. This lead to a period of anarchy in England as the barons reigned over their land as they pleased, wreaking havoc and causing pain to many. In one respect, however, Stephen cannot be faulted. His marriage to Matilda of Boulogne, appears to be one of mutual devotion and love. She stood by him and fought for him through one of the darkest periods of English history, advising him, though he did not always heed her words. Born around 1096, the son of Adela (daughter of William the Conqueror) and Stephen, Count of Blois, he was sent to his Uncle Henry's (King Henry I) court in England as a young boy after his father died in the Holy Land. From all accounts he was a pleasant young man who charmed all who encountered him. "He was in fact, a thing acknowledged to be very uncommon among the rich of the present day, rich and at the same time unassuming, generous and courteous; moreover in all the conflicts of war or in any siege of his enemies, bold and brave, judicious an patient."

Medieval Sourcebook:
The period following the death of Henry I in 1135 and the rule of Henry II were somwhat chaoitic inf England, dominated by the struggle between King Stephen and his cousin, the Empress Matilda, who was the daughter of Henry I and the mother of Henry II. Local nobility used the conflict to usurp power in many areas, an especial practice being that of castle building. The period is discussed in the chronicle of Henry, Archdeacon of Huntingdon, (c.1080-1160). [W]hen the Earl of Hereford, being in much want of money to pay the troops which he had levied against the king, forced the churches in his lordship to submit to new exactions, and required the Bishop of Hereford to pay the tax tyrannically imposed, claiming it as his right, and enforcing it by threats; being thus frequently pressed, the bishop deliberately and positively refused to pay the demand, asserting that ecclesiastical property, assigned to the altar by the pious offerings of devout people, belonged, in perpetual frankalmoin, to the service of God and the church, and that no lay man could interfere with them, any more than he could in the sacred rites; so that by laying hands on them he incurred the guilt of sacrilege, as much as if he had violated the altar itself. Wherefore, he required the earl to withdraw his presumptuous demand, and to restrain his people, or he threatened him and them with immediate excommunication. The king brought Geoffrey to London f London, in close custody, and threatened to hang him if he did not give up the Tower of London and the castles he had erected with wonderful skill and labour. By the advice of his friends, to escape an ignominious death, he submitted to the kin g's will, and agreed to the surrender; and being thus set at liberty, he escaped out of the hands of his enemies, to the great injury of the whole kingdom. For, being turbulent and fierce, by the exercise of his power he gave strength to rebellion through all England; as the king's enemies, hearing that he was in arms against the royal cause, and relying on the support of so great an earl began, with new spirit, to raise insurrections in every quarter; and even those who appeared to be the king's supporters, as if they had been struck by a thunderbolt, were more and more humiliated by his secession from the king's party.

(Saint and Founder of the Hungarian State) Stephen the first Hungarian King and founder of the Hungarian state was born in Esztergom in around 975, the son of Prince Géza and Sarolta. He became a prince in 997 and was crowned King in 1001. His wife was the Bavarian princess Gizella. She bore Stephen five children (Imre, Ottó, Bernát, Ágota and Hedvig). Stephen ruled for 41 years and died on August 15th 1038. He was buried in Székesfehérvár. His pagan name was Vajk (a word of Turkish origin meaning "hero") and his Christian name Stephen ("István" in Hungarian) was taken from the name of the martyr and protector of the church of Passau. An important role in Stephen's upbringing was played by the German priests who were, invited to come to Hungary by Prince Géza. Little is known with certainty about the future King's youth. In 995 accompanied by a magnificent retinue Stephen travelled to Bavaria and married Gizella, the daughter of Henry Prince of Bavaria.

He's Still the King: Stephen King (New York Post) August 03, 2003 He's Still the King
What's truly scary about America's top horror writer
New York Post - 08.04.03 Stephen King has been acting strange lately. For example: King writes that he read Jonathan Franzen's bestseller, The Corrections He then proceeds to mock Franzen's "constant taking of his creative temperature." ("How is Jonathan feeling today?") What's happening to Stephen King? Has he lost his instinct for violence and gore? And why is the Prolific Master of Sublime Horror masquerading as The Guy Who's Randomly Freelancing for Pseudo-Literary Publications That Go Unread by the Masses? Entertainment Weekly Maybe Stein has a point. Why not have every column end in a gory death? They are, after all, King's specialty and they happen all too infrequently in popular culture. Think of how much better "Glitter" would have performed at the box office if Mariah Carey made her final exit screaming hysterically as some netherworldly villain ensured that she'd never abuse another personal assistant again. So Nightmare on Elm Street Part III It would be refreshing to learn in King's new Entertainment Weekly column, for example, that Hollywood celebrities are really humanoid zombies. Many of us have long suspected this anyway. Who hasn't, when watching the cast of "Friends" make their requisite appearances on "Access Hollywood," thought that Matthew Perry and David Schwimmer could quite conceivably be sharing the same brain?
