Muslim Child:
Understanding Islam Through Stories And Poems
BY RUKHSANA KHAN, ILLUSTRATED BY PATTY GALLINGER
"With eight stories about Muslim life from such places as the United States, Pakistan, Canada and Nigeria, Muslim Child: Understanding Islam Through Stories and Poems by Rukhsana Khan offers insight into the five pillars of Islam (belief, prayer, fasting, charity and pilgrimage to Mecca) and demonstrates Muslim presence around the globe. Throughout, sidebars by Irfan Alli explain Muslim terms and traditions; sayings from the prophet Muhammad punctuate the text. A pronunciation guide, a samosa recipe and instructions for making `Eid Mubarak' cards to mark the end of Ramadan round out the volume." -Publishers Weekly

Resources for Families
Responses to Attack America Heroes Muslim Culture ... Glass Steel and Stone.com
A year has passed and we remember. The September 11 collection of resources for children, youth and their families was carefully researched and selected to provide the best resources for our community. This day has impacted on all our lives and we encourage parents to talk to their children during this time of remembrance. The District of Columbia Public Library is honored to serve our community with this collection of resources presenting themes of hope, tolerance and understanding. Public libraries bear witness to the events of September 11th as a cornerstone of a free democratic nation. Sincerely,
Mary (Molly) E. Raphael

The Bulletin
of the Center for Children's Books:
Rising Star Each month we offer a focus on a particular author or artist. Sometimes we use this space to discuss a rising new talent or an established star, but we also like to celebrate those who now live on only in the rich legacy of their books. See the archive for focus pieces from previous months. R. Gregory Christie
see cover art permission Looking at the collection of picture books on my young child's bookshelf, I'm struck by the uniqueness of each artist's approach, whether it's a simple cartoon style with gobs of white space, lush watercolors that bleed off the page, or wacky collages that pull together unexpected elements. The way each artist's personality jumps off the page is part of what I love about picture books. But as much as I love picture book art, it isn't very often that an artist gets under my skin the way R. Gregory Christie has.
Christie's acrylic illustrations are a compelling blend of realism and distortion. In his first book, The Palm of My Heart

Allauddin as solo hero...
  • Allauddin was Pakistan's most talented actor - the only successful actor as hero, villain, comedian and in old roles. He was introduced as a solo hero in a big Punjabi film " Tees Maar Khan " with a new beauty Sheerin.
  • Great Punjabi heroin Firdous in "Fanoos", Aliya and Albela in "Rishta", Nabila in "Dulhan" and Rozina in "Hamen bhi jeene do" were introduced.
  • A very talented musician Sohail Rana was introduced by producer Waheed Murad in his film "Jab se dekha hai tumhen".
  • Ahmad Rushdi was a very busy singer and he sung in all six released Punjabi films too - maybe an unique record?
  • Classical musician Ustad Barkat Ali Khan died on July 19th.

SIALKOT: The Tamgha-e-Sialkot Award Ceremony under the auspices of District Government Sialkot was held at Anwar Club on the eve on Pakistan Day. District Nazim Mian Naeem Javaid distributed the awards among various personalities who have gave their services in separate fields. The personalities who received the awards were Khawaja Muhammad Anwar late (received by his son Khawar Anwar Khawaja), Abdul Rasheed Lone Managing Director Sui Northern Gas, Agha Kamal Haider late (received by his son Agha Bilal Haider), Prof Asghar Sudai author of the venerated poem at the time of independence 'Pakistan Ka Matlab Kia' Ironically, the District Government did not bother to include in the list the most powerful class of the society, the journalists and none of them, even with international repute and hailing from Sialkot were given any acknowledgement of their life-long services in highlighting the image of Sialkot world-wide. As a mark of protest the Journalists and Press Photographers based in Sialkot, decided to boycott all events and invitations of the District Government until in revises its paradoxical attitude towards journalists.
