Rukhsana Khan: Weaver of Stories, Spinner of Tales
First published in The Daily Times , Ottawa, IL
(June 5, 2001)
Assalaamu alaikum! Those two words form a Muslim greeting that means "Peace be with you." I learned this greeting from "Muslim Child," a collection of short stories and poems by Canadian author Rukhsana Khan. This fascinating book offers 72 pages of information about Muslim culture and religion in short, easy-to-read stories and sidebars. It covers everything from an explanation of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, to a recipe for tasty meat-filled pastries called samosas. While reading "Muslim Child," I was amazed by everything I didn't know about Muslimsespecially their belief in other prophets besides Muhammad, including Adam, Noah, Moses, David, Jesus, and John the Baptist. According to Khan, "Muslims believe that prophets are men whom God chose to guide the rest of mankind. The Quran mentions twenty-five by name, but also says that God sent prophets to every nation of the world." "Muslim Child" is a must-read for kids and parents alike, Muslims and non-Muslims, teachers and clergy. I wish a book like this had been available to me when I was a child, but I'm glad it's now part of my family's library.

Interviews with children's/YA writers of South Asian origin
Between September and December 2002, I began looking for writers who, like me, had family or cultural links to the Indian subcontinent, write in English for young people, and live outside the reagion we know as South Asia. The result was an article , "On the Seashore of Worlds: Selected South Asian Voices from North America and the United Kingdom." It appears in the April 2004 issue of Bookbird, the Journal of IBBY (the Internation Board on Books for Young people). Here are the transcripts, edited only for consistency of format and punctuation, of the phone and e-mail exchanges I had with Rukhsana Khan Rachna Gilmore Jamila Gavin , and Tanuja Desai Hidier . Some of the material from these exchanges can also be found in an online article, "South Asian VoicesWith North American Accents," on the PaperTigers website.
Rukhsana Khan Date: Sat, 14 Sep 2002 21:33:32 -0700 1. Tell me how and when you began writing for young people. Why writing, and why this audience? I first began writing for children when I was sixteen and I wrote my 'first' picture book. But I seriously began writing for children thirteen years ago. I never considered writing for adults because my favourite books were children's books and classics like Jane Austen, Mark Twain, Charlotte Bronte, Thomas Hardy.

    AN INTERVIEW WITH
    RUKHSANA KHAN
Award Winning Writer For Children And Young Adults
    1. Why did you begin writing books for children?

This is a tough question. I actually began writing books in my teens. I wrote a novel when I was fourteen. An adventure story about a Muslim gypsy girl. I wanted to write a story that had, at its core, Islamic principles. A girl who was Muslim and proud of it. Because all the stories I read never addressed that. And if there was a Muslim character, it was more like a caricature. Some odd character, not fully fleshed out at all, usually a villain in the story or there to add exotic flavoring. None of the main characters were ever Muslim, and I felt neglected and left out.
As I got older this negative portrayal of Muslims made me more and more angry and I felt that someone should do something about it. Someone should show these non-Muslims that we have reasons for thinking and believing as we do. That we are logical people and not what they think we are. Then I started writing for some small Muslim newsletters. The editors
