Profile by Dave Jenkinson.

Born in Lahore, Pakistan, on March 13, 1962, Rukhsana Khan moved with her family first to Britain and then, about a year later at age three, to Canada."When we came to Canada in the Sixties, racism was 'in your face.' We lived in Dundas, Ontario, which then had a population of about 16,000 people, and only two of the families were Indian. My father worked at a tool and die company, and his coworkers used to call him 'black bastard' right to his face. They hardly ever called him by his name, and he put up with it because he had four kids to feed. My father had chosen to live in Canada because he wanted to get away from those cultural influences which said girls are expendable. He also wanted to raise us as Muslims, and he wanted a good neighborhood."
"It turned out to be very difficult. Because we stuck out so much, we were persecuted from day one. If it hadn't been for that negative treatment, I don't think I would have become a writer because my growing up was so horrible that I went to books to escape. Having no friends, I spent my recesses among the trees. I used to think a lot, and that's when I really came to terms with what my beliefs are, who I am, and what my place is in the universe. I also read a lot, tons of books, and some have stayed with me. Shadow of a Bull by Maia Wojciechowska was one. I loved Eloise Jarvis McGraw's

Rukhsana Khan was born in Lahore, Pakistan in 1962. She moved with her family first to Britain and then, about a year later at age three, to Dundas, Ontario. Khan began by writing for community magazines and went on to write songs and stories for the Adam's World children's videos. She has written three picture books, Bedtime Ba-a-a-lk, about some unruly sheep, The Roses in My Carpets, which is set in an Afghani refugee camp and told from the perspective of a young boy, a character inspired from a child she sponsors, and King of the Skies, about a disabled boy who has one day in the year when he rules-the day of Basnut, the Indian Kite festival. Khan's book for young adults, Dahling If You Luv Me Would You Please Please Smile, was shortlisted for the Ruth Schwartz Award, the Red Maple Award and won the Manitoba Young Reader's Choice Honour Award (she tied for second with Margaret Buffie). She has also written a collection of short stories and poems, Muslim Child, designed to teach the basic tenets of the Islamic faith. In addition to her writing, Khan is a storyteller: she considers it a challenge to hold her audiences of children and teenagers spellbound, hanging on every word. The stories are from the Middle East and Persia, as well as from Islamic history and her own tales. She has also developed Universality in Folktales, a program which involves students bringing folktales or personal stories from their own cultures and sharing them with other students.

    Biography
Her grade eight teacher first told her that she was a writer. At sixteen Rukhsana wrote and illustrated a picture book that eventually ended up in the hands of a New York children's editor. The picture book was not accepted, but the letter she received was encouraging and many years later Rukhsana tried again. After nine years, Rukhsana had not one book, but five books under contract, with major children's publishers both in Canada and the United States. Her second book, The Roses in My Carpets won the honorary Januscz Korczak award, awarded bi-annually by the Polish section of I.B.B.Y.(International Board on Books for Young People). Her novel, Dahling if You Luv Me Would You Please Please Smile , has been shortlisted for the Red Maple award.

King of the Skies. By rukhsana khan. Illustrated by Laura Fernandez Rick Jacobsen.~~~~~. A Picture Book. Published in Canada by Scholastic Inc. 32 pg, Hardcover.

King of the Skies By Rukhsana Khan A Picture Book Published in Canada by Scholastic Inc. 32 pg, Hardcover $19.99 CDN ISBN 0-439-98725-3 Reviews The "King of the Skies" is a young boy living in Lahore, Pakistan. All year he has waited for the kite festival, Basunt, which is held in early February to celebrate the arrival of spring. The boy narrates the dramatic tale of his beautiful yellow kite he names "Guddi Chore" or Kite Thief. Above the rooftops of the city, the kites battle, and the boy can cut "free" another kite with the twine of his kite which as been "sharpened" with powdered glass. All day his sister and brother scoop up fallen kites for the "King" as he is unable to walk or run. Then the boy hears a girl who has lost her kite crying below, and he lofts one his newly acquired kites down to her on the darkening city street. At the end of the day, the "King of the Skies" celebrates his triumphs with his family as he eagerly looks forward to the festival the next year. In this beautiful and satisfying story, Guddi Chore embodies the boy's spirit which soars with the thrills and action of the kite battles. School-age children will enjoy hearing this well-told story of sharing, determination and joy. The story's eloquence is matched by the elegant book design and luminous oil paintings by the award winning couple, Laura Fernandez and Rick Jacobson. The paintings present changing perspectives on the festival with views above and below the kites and the children. This approach gives a strong sense of the movement and excitement of the day. The bright kite shapes crowd and flutter across the softly colored sky and stand out because of their contrast. Each full-page colour painting faces the text placed on a tall buff colored background shape. The text page is decorated with a swash capital and decorative elements which are reminiscent of traditional manuscript design.

    Review by Dave Jenkinson. excerpt:
"Wake up, stupid" Jamal sat up and rubbed his eyes. His sister Seema stood in the doorway. "Didn't you hear Abi calling? It's time for Fajr Jamal glanced at the clock. Four-thirty in the morning. As soon as Seema was gone, Jamal flopped back down. The mattress hugged his tired body, massaging his aching muscles. He felt so cozy. He wished he could bring the sink to his bed, make wadu and pray lying down. Eight stories form the core of Muslim Child Muslim Child, in addition to containing three poems by the author plus brief selections from the Quran and sayings of the Prophet Muhammad, also has instructions on how to make samosas and an Eid card. Patty Gallinger's black and white illustrations, some of them full-page, serve both decorative and informational functions. Instead of Khan's interrupting her stories to explain terms, such as "adhan" or daal," the words, when first used, are presented in italics and then defined or expanded upon in brief sidebars written by Irfan Alli. Using fiction as a means to impart factual information is a challenge for an author because the story can easily become didactic. Khan generally succeeds, though, but especially in those instances in which she presents her central characters with situations involving moral decisions, such as Jamal's having to choose between sleep or early morning prayer or Jameelah's being tempted by candy containing pork byproducts, a fact about which she could feign ignorance by pretending she had not read the packaging information that listed the ingredients.
