I Want a Dog - Dayal Kaur Khalsa

This author always seems to be able to capture the truly important moments of childhood and I Want a Dog rings true with almost everyone. Before we even begin Dayal Khalsa has adorned the cover with a famous painting which mimics Georges Seurat's pointillism art of "Sunday Afternoon." On the cover of this book there are no people, only dogs. A brilliant stroke. May wants a dog, she reads about them, draws them, plasters her bedroom with pictures of them, begs for a dog, lures neighbourhood dogs home by strolling down the street with a slice of salami, and innocently explains, "They followed me home, Ma. Dogs just seem to want to be with me." May doesn't give up, her next attempt involves bringing home a puppy to give to her mother for her birthday. The more her parents explain to her all the reasons why they do not want a dog, the more May gets upset, for these are the exact reasons she does want a dog. May's last resort is a roller skate, she practises with a roller skate until she is good at it then she goes everywhere with her roller skate on a leash. When her friends comment that it's only a rope, May quickly corrects them, "It's not a rope, it's a leash." When she goes somewhere where it says No Dogs Allowed, she leaves her roller skate outside. She takes it trick-or -treating, she takes it for a walk every day and before you know it the neighbourhood is full of kids walking their roller skates.

Art for Art's Sake
by Margo Beggs
Armed with a degree in English, I came to the field of children's literature more equipped to comment on text than illustration. Over the past few years, however, I have been studying art history at the University of Toronto. This experience has led me to believe that we need to examine the work of picture book illustrators as deeply as we do the work of the writers. The following is one of a series of articles I have written to help others better "read" picture book illustrations.
Luncheon on the Grass
(1863) nearly 20 years ago, and I've been fascinated by it ever since. It was wonderful to be able to renew my acquaintance with this ground-breaking work.
We capped off our Paris stay with a visit to the Picasso Museum. There, among the hundreds of works by this great artist, I was amused to discover his numerous variations on Manet's Luncheon on the Grass. Picasso frequently reworked themes by other artists, but his involvement with Luncheon on the Grass was rather extraordinary. According to Susan Grace Galassi in her book Picasso's Variations on the Masters , Picasso used the Manet work as the basis of 27 oil paintings, about 150 drawings, three linoleum cuts, 18 cardboard maquettes for sculpture, five concrete sculptures, and a numberof ceramic plaques.
