Didier, The Golden Days of the Maryland Bar 3 Green Bag 312-318, at 316 (1891) " FRANCIS SCOTT KEY was born in Frederick County, Maryland, August 1, 1779. His father, John Ross Key, an officer in the army in the Revolutionary war, was a descendant from some of the earliest settlers of the province. The son was educated at St. John's College, Annapolis, and, after completing his course, studied law with his uncle, Philip B[arton] Key, at Annapolis, and, in 1801, commenced the practice of the profession at Fredericktown, in his native county. Some years after he removed to Washington [D.C.], where he became District Attorney of the city, and there remained until his death, January 11, 1843. Mr. Key was the author, in addition to the Star-Spangled Banner, of a few other songs and devotional pieces. His poems were written without any view to publication, on some passing topic for his own and the gratification of his friends. They were noted down on odd scraps of apper, backs of letters, &c., a piece of several verses being often on as many separate slips of paper, and were seldom revised by the author." Fitzgerald, Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald, Francis Scott Key (1896-1940) was a star-spangled Princetonian of the Class of 1917. The poet Robert Browning once wrote that the legend inside his heart was ``Italy.'' With Fitzgerald it would probably have been ``Princeton.'' He entered this earthly paradise in the fall of 1913 from the Catholic Newman School in Hackensack, squeaking past his entrance examinations that September by the narrowest margin, and hurling himself into extracurricular activities with so much enthusiasm that he barely survived his first two years. After three months as a junior, he withdrew because of ill health and poor grades. Following nine months of rustication and recuperation at home in St. Paul, Minnesota, he re-entered as a beginning junior in the fall of 1916. He managed to complete that academic year and one month of his senior year before withdrawing again to enter Officers Training in October 1917. In 1814 the British seized Dr. William Beanes in retreat from Washington, and Key was dispatched to arrange his release. This accomplished, Key spent the night of September 13-14 on an American ship as the British shelled Baltimore. In "The Star-Spangled Banner," written on an envelope as he was taken ashore and revised in his hotel after night fell, Key recorded his feelings when dawn broke and the American flag still flew. His sister-in-law, Mrs. Joseph Hopper Nicholson, took it to a printer the next day. After being published on handbills, the anthem was printed in the Baltimore American on September 21. Everyone in Georgetown knew where the much-loved doctor was. It's just that his neighbors and patients couldn't get to him. He had been captured by the British during the War of 1812. It wasn't enough that British troops had invaded and captured Washington. It wasn't enough they had set fire to the Capitol and to the White House. Now His Majesty's land and sea military were poised to take Baltimore. At least, that's what they thought. It was September, 1814. Dr. Beanes was held captive on the British ship Tonnant, accused of unfriendly acts toward British soldiers. People in nearby Georgetown were frantic. They were sure the British would hang the old man. The townspeople needed a lawyer to negotiate with the British. They called on a respected local lawyer with a thriving law practice: Francis Scott Key At the time, Key had successfully argued several cases before the United States Supreme Court. He was a good lawyer who knew when he needed expert help. Recognizing he needed help to negotiate with the British, Key and a well-known negotiator went to Baltimore to plead for old Doc Beanes.
