(from Jack Kerouac's On The Road) to be the driver of "Further". Ken decided that this bus trip was going to be worthy of a movie, so they bought some 16mm film equipment and striped outfits for the crew to wear.
Eventually the govenment decided to make LSD illegal and Ken and the Pranksters fled to Mexico. After coming back to the U.S. to do one last performance, known as the "Acid Test Graduation," Ken and a few others were busted on a marijuana charge. Upon release from jail, Ken moved to a farm in Pleasant Hill, Oregon, "settled down," and raised his family there. HOME WRITERS BOOKS INFO ... CREDITS

One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest
Ken Kesey
ONE FLEW OVER The Cuckoo's Nest was an immediate critical and commercial success. It was read as a compelling cautionary tale that viewed society, represented by Big Nurse, as a cold, formidable negation of all that is free, lusty and nonconformist. McMurphy, a malingerer from a penal work farm, tries to rekindle a spark of life among his fellow patients, and is thwarted at each step by the cold, calculating Nurse Ratched, who ultimately curtails McMurphy's free wheeling ways by subjecting him to a lobotomy. From this book, Kesey gained the notoriety and the income necessary to draw together his motley band of Merry Pranksters, who through their many antics and travels, set the stage for the Psychedelic Era that was to follow. A critically acclaimed novel that is still taught at universities today, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest remains Ken Kesey's most popular work.
Can You Pass the Acid Test? WITH THE COMMERCIAL success of One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, Kesey bought property in La Honda and moved his wife and children and assorted Merry Pranksters to the mountains outside of San Francisco. There they began throwing parties Kesey called Acid Tests, where revelers would ingest LSD, sometimes without their knowledge, and attempt to survive the often harrowing night. Kesey believed that one's personal fears should be confronted under the influence of hallucinogenic drugs. The surrounding woods, with trees painted day-glo colors, dissonant music blasting from hidden speakers, and the very odd invited guestsincluding members of the Hell's Angelsmade the parties an experience that not all endured without physical and psychological consequences. Kesey constantly pushed the limits with his own experimentations and eventually moved the Acid Tests into public places such as the Longshoreman's Hall, Muir Beach, or musical events at Bill Graham's Fillmore West.

Ken Kesey
September 17, 1935 - November 10, 2001 We all mourn the loss of "the Chief," but we remember all he has done in his wonderful life. The following quote from his close friend Ken Babbs was taken from IntrepidTrips.com "Kesey's belly was hurting and the docs did a scan and found a black spot on his liver. It was cancerous but encapsulated which meant there was no cancer anywhere else. They decided to cut it out and the surgery went okay. He had sixty percent of his liver left to carry the load but in one of those dirty tricks the body can play on you everything else went to hell and this morning at 3:45 AM his heart stopped beating. A great good friend and great husband and father and grand dad, he will be sorely missed but if there is one thing he would want us to do it would be to carry on his life's work. Namely to treat others with kindness and if anyone does you dirt forgive that person right away. This goes beyond the art, the writing, the performances, even the bus. Right down to the bone."
Ken Babbs May you forever be on the bus, Kesey! What a long, strange trip it's been...

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Ken (Elton) Kesey (1935-2001) American writer, who gained world fame with his novel ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST (1962, filmed 1975). Kesey became in the 1960s a counterculture hero and a guru of psychedelic drugs with Timothy Leary. Kesey has been called the Pied Piper who changed the beat generation into the hippie movement. "I think McMurphy knew better than we did that our tough looks were all show, because he still wasn't able to get a real laugh out of anybody. Maybe he couldn't understand why we weren't able to laugh yet, but he knew you can't really be strong until you see a funny side to things. In fact, he worked so hard of pointing out the funny side of things that I was wondering a little if maybe he was blind to the other side, if maybe he wasn't able to see what it was that parched laughter deep inside your stomach." (from One Flew Over Cuckoo's Nest Ken Kesey was born in La Junta, Colorado, and brought up in Eugene, Oregon. His father worked in the creamery business, in which he was eventually successful after founding the Eugene Farmers Cooperative. Kesey spent his early years hunting, fishing, swimming; he learned to box and wrestle, and he was a star football player. He studied at the University of Oregon, where he acted in college plays. On graduating he won a scholarship to Stanford University. Kesey soon dropped out and joined the counterculture movement. In 1956 he married his school sweetheart, Faye Haxby. He began experimenting with drugs and wrote an unpublished novel, ZOO, about the beatniks of the North Beach community in San Francisco. Tom Wolfe in his book

http://www.ulster.net/~shady/keezintv.html
Ken Kesey Interview by Mary Jane Fenex and Matthew Rick Matthew Rick: Of the pieces you've done, do you have a particular favorite? Ken Kesey: "Tricker the Squirrel" I think is the best piece I ever wrote. It's intricate and well wrought. The best long piece is Sometimes A Great Notion. I'll never come up with a better book. Mary Jane Fenex: Why? KK: I don't know, but Alberto Salazaar ain't gonna win the New York Marathon. There's a thing you have when you're young. Me and, oh, Norman Mailer have talked about this. About how hard it is in America to get better. Especially at writing. MJF: Do you think it's the influence of American culture that we can only go so far? KK: I saw Jerzy Korzinski just before he died before he committed suicide and talked to him about this. He said in Europe you make one good book, one good movie, and you're set. In America you're expected to best yourself every year and that in itself is crippling. With Sometimes A Great Notion I was able to work 20 or 30 hours at a whack and I had all this stuff in my mind. I've been to too many Dead concerts. There've been smokin' holes where my memory used to be. MR: The things you did with style, with narrative, with splicing stuff...
