Gerald Kersh Gerald Kersh (1911-1968) was born in Teddington-on-Thames, London, and died penniless as an American citizen in Kingston, New York. He was declared dead at the age of two, but managed to live long enough to write over 1,000 articles, 400 short stories, and 19 novels.

Nightshade and Damnations:
The Finest Stories of Gerald Kersh
Cross Harlan Ellison with Shirley Jackson, with just a dash of Italo Calvino. You wouldn't end up with Gerald Kersh, but you might see the parallels. From Paul Duncan's Gerald Kersh newsletter "Gerald Kersh (1911-1968) was a great storyteller. He had 19 novels and 21 short story collections published; 21 of these books were never published in the US. He wrote novels, short stories and articles about mystery, SF, war and any subject you care to mention." Nightshade and Damnations , published on the eve of Kersh's death, is a fine sampling. Some of the stories, such as "Men Without Bones," are little more than genre period pieces; others, particularly "The Queen of Pig Island" and "Whatever Happened to Corporal Cuckoo?" touch on the sort of magic realism of which Ellison would later become both an admirer and practitioner. Ellison, from the Introduction: "Damn you, Kersh, for showing me, and all of us who strive to capture magic in a shot glass, how much better you are, how much more easily you can do it! ... No mortal can write this well." This collection, like most of Kersh's writings, is out of print and difficult to find. For more information about the author and his work, visit the

Gerald Kersh's Men Without Bones
commentary by rbadac
Some good blurbs on the back of the Men Without Bones (World Distributors; London, 1960) paperback: "As a surgeon exposing the inner malaise of some of our citizens, Kersh wields the keenest scalpel since Huxley and Waugh were at work in the 'twenties." -Joseph Taggert (Star) I'll buy that. Even if it does make three great writers sound like serial killers. "He is the real successor of Kipling; not a successor by imitation, but a successor by temperament." -Frank O'Connor (Evening News) That too. Kipling needs a successor. Kersh needs one too by now. "Gerald Kersh is that rare combination, a master craftsman with the popular touch; he can satisfy highbrow and lowbrow alike." -John Brophy (Sunday Graphic) Well, that covers this discussion group, hee hee. "I have seen the future of horror, and its name is Gerald Kersh." -Stephen King (Bangor Daily News) Okay, I made that last one up. Or did I? It's hard to be sure. "Men Without Bones" should be familiar, having made it in the more famous (on this side of the ocean) collection Harlan Ellison edited in the Seventies, If Harlan likes it, it must be good, right? Well, generally speaking, anyway (you Dan Simmons fans shut up back there). Two explorers in the Central American jungle find evidence of Martian visitation. They also find yup

Kersh definitly was one of the authors who not only wrote
gripping books but were interesting personalities as well.
According to Crimetime magazine, Derek Raymond (Robin Cook)
was a Kersh fan as well. Incidentally I am reading Prelude To A
Certain Midnight at the moment and it is not hard to imagine that
Raymond was impressed by the book.

I wondered if anybody knows of other books which so singularly inspired a
    writer to write?
