Gerald Kersh
"Under the clouds of war, it is humanity hanging on a cross of iron." Kersh was a strange mixture for a writer; part fantasy, part mystery/horror, and a large part social critic and activist. And just as strangely, Kersh was a very popular writer, with the number of books in print hampered by the paper shortage. He became a novelist in the 1930s with the publication of Men are so Ardent , 1936, and his third book, Night and the City , 1938, made him famous (becoming a movie with Richard Widmark and Gene Tierney). Another of Kersh's stories "The Extraordinarily Horrible Dummy" was filmed in 1945 as Dead of Night When WW II imposed itself, Kersh became a member of the Coldstream Guard, having both of his legs broken by a German bomb that landed nearby in a London street. Recovering, and pushing for the fight, Kersh ended up in France, seeking out and helping relatives when he could, but finding that some had been sent to concentration camps, never to be seen again. An earlier fling into wrestling served him well, as Kersh was something of a barroom brawler. He enjoyed tearing telephone books in two, opening beer bottles with his fingernails, and bending dimes with his teeth. Kirsh was also given to staying up all night drinking and playing poker, then cleaning himself up and continuing the next day without sleep.

Faces in a Dusty Picture Review Summary The year is 1940 or '41, the place is Cairo and the surrounding desert. Rommel is on the march, and the British are trying to decide whether to attack or retreat. This slim "slice o' life," written only a year or two after the scenario it evokes, shows what it was like to be in the British army from the general to the privates, from a Lieutenant whose father's passing has just made him a lord to a venal quartermaster as panic rises and the battle commences. The utterly omniscient narration moves from one consciousness to the next, including Italian and German generals, as men prepare to face war and death. Kersh impressively recreates the tortuous march through the desert, the dreamlike death of an aviator, various battlefield fatalities sudden and slow, and countless other details.

Gerald Kersh was born in Teddington-on-Thames, London and died penniless as an American citizen in Kingston, New York. He wrote over 1,000 articles, 400 short stories, and 19 novels. His account of infantry training They Die With Their Boots Clean (1941), became an instant best-seller during World War Two, and launched Kersh on a glittering career. Tax, health and personal problems in later life did not prevent Kersh from writing forgotten masterpieces like Prelude To A Certain Midnight (1947), Fowlers End (1957), The Implacable Hunter (1961) And The Angel And The Cuckoo (1966)
