Index The son of an impoverished French-Canadian family, Jack Kerouac also questioned the values of middle-class life. He met members of the "Beat" literary underground as an undergraduate at Columbia University in New York City. His fiction was much influenced by the loosely autobiographical work of southern novelist Tom Wolfe Kerouac's best-known novel, On the Road (1957), describes "beatniks" wandering through America seeking an idealistic dream of communal life and beauty through jazz and drug-induced visions. The book epitomises the generation that Kerouac himself named as “beat.” It is the tale of his adventures with Neal Cassady (the character Dean Moriarty), before he dropped out of the 'Beat' scene and withdrew into alcoholism. The Dharma Bums (1958) also focuses on peripatetic counterculture intellectuals and their infatuation with Zen Buddhism. Kerouac also penned a book of poetry

Peu à peu ce mot a pris le sens que lui ont donné les jazzmen noirs, "beat" en vint à signifier une manière de traverser la vie. Etre beat devint être foutu, à bout de souffle, exténué. Brief essay on the writer.
http://www.americanlegends.com/authors/kerouac.html
Kerouac: Homage To Jack Jean-Louis Kerouac: His life was the stuff of which legends are spun. The son of a printer, he was born in 1922, and grew up in a mill town, Lowell, Massachusetts. The Kerouacs were French- Canadian, descended from fur trappers and traders. Even as a boy, Kerouac knew what he would be: a writer. Athletic, rugged, handsome, he called himself Jackafter Jack London, and, like London, his vision of the world was romantic and adventurous. Yet, Kerouac might have remained in Lowell, another kid who dreamed of glory, if luck had not lent a magical hand. In high school, Kerouac was spotted playing football by an Ivy League scout and was recruited to play in the backfield for Columbia University. The university arranged for a scholarship, and Kerouac arrived on the Morningside Heights campus in the fall of 1940. Like some character in Balzac, another writer he admired, the glittering prewar city lay before him, with all the promise it held for youth. But the world has a way of holding out its treasures only to snatch them away. Freshman year, Kerouac was injured in a game and sat out the season. According to a biographer, sophomore year, Jack quit the team and dropped out of Columbia because the coach kept him on the bench. (Ann Charters

Hans vel mest kendte bog, ”On The Road”, blev oversat til mange sprog, og også Kerouac selv blev genstand for et stateligt antal af biografier. BIO: Son of French-Canadian immigrants, Jean Louis Kerouac was born March 12, 1922 in Massachusetts, USA. The World War II years saw him serving with the U.S.Merchant.Marine and attending Columbia.University , where he met Allen.Ginsberg and William Burroughs. In 1945 Jack found his muse and idol when he hooked up with Denver wildman, Neil Cassady. In 1948 Jack coined the term, "beat generation" - alluding to the Beatitudes and the holy teaching that the poor and downtrodden are favored by God. The 50's and early 60's were for Jack a blur of cross-country travel, drug and alcohol abuse, sex, jazz, and through it all, a continuous outpouring of genius onto the printed page. Best friend Cassady died in 1968, and alcoholism put an end to the journeys of Jack Kerouac a year later. 74. Jack Kerouac's Words Stand Up To Time
An article by Nancy Pate from The Orlando Sentinel.

Jack Kerouac's words stand up to time By Nancy Pate
The Orlando Sentinel ''I was a young writer and I wanted to take off. ''Somewhere along the line I knew there'd be girls, visions, everything; somewhere along the line the pearl would be handed to me.'' So young Jack Kerouac wrote at the end of the first chapter of an autobiographical novel chronicling the cross-country travels of two young men, Dean Moriarty and Sal Paradise. Written in practically nonstop typing sessions in April of 1951, it was originally one single-spaced paragraph on a single roll of paper 120 feet long. Kerouac revised and retyped it over the next month, but it would be six years before the manuscript was published. But when ''On the Road'' made its debut 40 years ago this month, its sheer wind-in-your-hair, pedal-to-the-metal, epiphany-around-the-next-curve style changed not only its young author's life but also that of generations of restless readers who fell in love with the romance of the road. Kerouac was living in Orlando, in a College Park cottage with a tin-roofed porch, for much of 1957. But he went to New York for the publication of ''On the Road'' and to read the first review in The New York Times. Gilbert Millstein wrote that the publication of ''On the Road'' marked an ''historic occasion.'' He called it a ''major novel'' and ''the most beautifully executed, the clearest and the most important utterance yet made by the generation Kerouac himself named years ago as 'beat,' and whose principle avatar he is.''

77. Internet Obituary Network: Jack Kerouac
The death of jack kerouac October 20, 1969.
http://obits.com/kerouac.html
Jack Kerouac
Jack Kerouac, popular writer of the beat generation, died at the age of 47 October 20, 1969. He published "On the Road" and sixteen other books chronicling his wandering life.
He was born into a French-Canadian family in Lowell, Massachusetts March 12, 1922. His father published a local newsletter, and Jack began writing about sports while still a child. After public and Catholic schooling, he earned a football scholarship to the Horace Mann prep school in New York, and, later, to Columbia University. A broken leg freshman year crippled his dreams of becoming a football star. He dropped out sophomore year to join the Merchant Marine, then the Navy, which later discharged him. Returning to New York, he married Edie Parker. The marriage lasted two months before Kerouac left, and moved in with Allen Ginsberg.
It was then he began his wanderings, driving across the country with his good friend Neal Cassidy, who Kerouac believed a better writer than he. Early in the road trip adventures, Jack agreed to teach Neal to write if Neal would teach him to drive. Kerouac later published his chronicled journey in "The Town and the City." He planned another, written in a different style, one of spontaneous prose, to be called "On the Road." It was to be written in three weeks under a Benzedrine-induced rush. He typed the document on a single roll of paper 120 feet long, but couldn't get it published. The early 1950's continued similarly, with unpublished novels accumulating in a rucksack he dragged along on his journeys across the U.S.

Glossary entry for
Kerouac, Jack
Jack Kerouac (born: March 12, 1922 - Lowell, Massachusetts; died: October 21, 1969 - St. Petersburg, Florida) was arguably the most important writer of what has become known as the "Beat Generation". Writing in an exuberant and free-flowing style he captured the excitement and holy joy of living outside the boring conservative mainstream of his time: the post-WWII United States. Kerouac's books were an extremely powerful influence on me as I was growing up, as they were for Van Morrison, all the way across the Atlantic in Ireland. Everyone at "a certain age" - that stage when you're yearning to break free from conformity and set out into the wider world in search of adventure - should read some Kerouac. If you haven't yet: I envy you your first exposure to his books. The three essential titles, in my opinion, are the following (click on the links to be taken to Amazon.com, where you can purchase these if you wish):
  • On the Road - perhaps his most famous book: the Bible of the Beat Generation.
  • The Dharma Bums - Kerouac's first encounters with Buddhism, through his friendship with Gary Snyder (Japhy Ryder in the book), and

(Originally written for Evergreen Review in 1969, published early 1970 at the request of publisher Barney Rossett as an obituary for Kerouac) I used to see Jack often at the old Five Spot in the beginning of 1957, when I was working there. I knew he was a writer, and all musicians knew that he loved music. You could tell by the way he sat and listened. He never tried to seem hip. He was too interested in life around him to ever think of how he appeared. Musicians understood this and were always glad to see him, because we knew that meant at least one person would be I listening. Jack was on the same wave-length as we were, so it was never necessary to talk. A few months later, poets Howard Hart and Philip Lamantia came by my place with Jack. They had decided to read their poetry with music, and Jack said he would join in, reading, improvising, rapping with the audience and singing along. Our first performance was in December of 1957 at the Brata Art Gallery on East 10th Street. It was the first jazz-poetry reading in New York. There was no advertising and it was raining, but the place was packed. Jack had become the most important figure of the time. His name was magic. In spite of the carping, whining put-downs by the furious critics, and the jealousy of some of his contemporaries for his overnight success (he had written ten books in addition to
