Sal Paradise, y Neal Cassady, a.k.a.

Jack Kerouac's New York City
The following is a list of places in New York City where Jack Kerouac once roamed, drank or lived.
Jack Kerouac- merchant marine.
The White Horse Tavern 567 Hudson St.

Kerouac used to live across the street from this old 19th century tavern. It is said that the old wooden bar room hasnt changed at all. The side rooms are relatively recent additions. This place is a crowded nightmare on weekend nights. Go there on a weekday around 1 o'clock, take a seat at the bar and soak up the atmosphere. They have a decent selection of beer, including White Horse Ale. The food is good too. Other great writers who got blitzed at the White Horse: Dylan Thomas, Norman Mailer, Hunter S. Thompson. Saint Patricks's Cathedral- 5th Ave. and 49th St.
Located in Midtown, just a stones throw from Rockefeller center, this beautiful gothic cathedral was a place of spiritual solace for Kerouac. Take your copy of Visons of Cody and see if you can find Jack's stained glass window. McSorley's Old Ale House- 15 E. 7th St.
Established in 1854, this is New York's oldest bar. Four U.S presidents including Lincoln and Kennedy visited this bar. As far as I know Kerouac made no mention of it in any of his writings, but it seems impossible to me that he didn't drink here. Everything in this bar looks ancient- from the doors to the urinals. They serve only two beers- McSorley's Light and McSorley's Dark. One round consists of 2 mugs of beer. Each mug is about 3/5th's beer and 2/5th's foam. Since it is both a tourist trap and local favorite it is often very crowded. Get there before 4 and you should be able to find a table.

KEROUAC, JACK
, novelist. Kerouac was an unlikely figure to become a patron saint of the Beat movement of the 1950s, which his novel On the Road made famous, or of the 1960s counterculture, which he eventually came to despise. He was born Jean-Louis Lebris de Kerouac to French-Canadian parents in Lowell, Massachusetts, a mill town where his father worked as a printer. A shy, introspective child with a deep religious streak, he achieved local fame as a high school athlete, which enabled him to attend Columbia University on a football scholarship. But Kerouac, who had long wanted to be a writer, was restless. He dropped out of Columbia to become a merchant seaman and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy. When he returned to New York he met Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs, whose friends, ranging from Columbia students and jazz musicians to petty thieves, formed the nucleus of the Beat legend that would be exhaustively chronicled by both Kerouac and Ginsberg. The circle was completed when Kerouac met a hypnotic character named Neal Cassady in 1946. Their cross-country travels between 1946 and 1950 became the subject of On the Road

Kerouac, Jack
, writer. A leader of the "beatnik" generation, Kerouac chronicled his spontaneous, free-spirited travels around the United States in his best-seller, On the Road , making him a cult hero in the beat movement of the 1950s and 1960s. His honest, relaxed, readable style deteriorated in later years, owing to his alcoholism, from which he died.

51. Bright Lights Film Journal | The Source
Documentary on Allen Ginsberg, jack kerouac, William Burroughs, and all things Beatnik
http://www.brightlightsfilm.com/26/thesource.html
An uneven new documentary
looks at all things Beat

BY GARY MORRIS The Beats have returned with a vengeance. New editions of On the Road are rolling off the presses; interest in Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs is at an all-time high; Beat women like Diane di Prima are getting some well-deserved attention, as are black Beats such as Amiri Baraka. Like other counterculture movements, the Beat generation has for some been reduced to a fashion statement — chinos, T-shirt, and masculine scowl. It’s also been neatly coopted by corporations seeking street credibility — even Ginsberg did a Gap ad before he died. It’s not hard to imagine Kerouac’s face next to John and Yoko’s in those duplicitous "Think Different" billboards from Apple. The Source looks at these issues and the whole history of the Beats in a intriguing, if ultimately rather shallow, documentary that’s less a linear biography of the movement than a kind of "Beat chic" sampler. (No real surprise here: Workman’s also responsible for those slick, empty montages at the Academy Awards every year.) This collage portrait moves giddily from the ‘40s to the ‘90s, from historical footage to Hollywood send-ups of Beat culture, from realism to re-creation via a trio of actors who impersonate Kerouac, Ginsberg, and Burroughs. Newsreel footage of Eisenhower America and Levittown, shots from Ozzie and Harriet

Scratching beneath the surface of Jack Kerouac
'Jack Kerouac - King of the Beats' by Barry Miles January 18, 2000
Web posted at: 11:58 a.m. EST (1658 GMT) Review by Josh Zelman (CNN) From the nearly incestuous relationship with his mother to details of a TV program Jack Kerouac was watching before he died, Barry Miles presents, in extraordinary detail, the life of "Jack Kerouac King of the Beats." As a college dropout who primarily spoke a French dialect for the first dozen years of his life, Kerouac became one of the most recognized literary figures of the 20th century. With his love for the written word, maybe it’s not amazing that Kerouac overcame a language barrier before finding success, but it is stunning that his frequent visits to prostitutes and rowdy bar fights didn’t kill him first. A transient from birth, Kerouac’s family moved frequently during his formative years, a theme he carried throughout his entire life and into his well-known book, "On the Road." Kerouac dropped out of Columbia University, was discharged from the Navy, and never managed to hold a steady job or a stable relationship. Miles says it was often those unstable relationships which provided the background for much of Kerouac's work. Whether it was an interracial love affair or his emotionally damaged friend who turned to homosexual activities, all seemed to find themselves as subjects in Kerouac’s writings.
