About the Story
Excerpt: "... I raised my hand toward the shimmering forcefield and briefly inhaled a ripe, earthy smell. Pinpoints of color shone under the sun. "Flowers!" I cried, tears welling in my eyes. A sudden pain wracked my body. I pushed through the crowd, feeling Psyche's insistent tug on the umbilical cord as I unwittingly dragged her along. "Tharghis!" she cried. "What are you doing? Are you mad? Your stress levels haven't been primed for physical exertion! Your hormonal levels are fluctuating! Think of your heart!" "I am thinking of my heart!" I cried, exhilarated for the first time in my life. ..." Statistics for this Story

http://www.dianakemp-jones.com/intro.htm
ABOUT DIANA KEMP-JONES It's said that some people have their heads in the clouds. In the case of science fiction author, Diana Kemp-Jones, her head can be found beyond this world into the realm of stars somewhere to the left of Alpha Centauri. Diana was an imaginative only-child prone to creating fantasy worlds. In early elementary school, her talent for writing materialized in the guise of gruesome short stories such as the "Goushy GreenEye-ball." Inspired by the original Star Trek series, her love for science fiction later displayed itself in epic length stories for her English composition class. A passion for travel took her abroad during and after her college years. She eventually moved to England where she lived and worked for several years. Having explored and subsequently discarded the realm of more traditional jobs, she returned to the States and devoted herself to pursuing her true path as a writer. An admitted eccentric, Diana is an ardent swimmer, animal lover and voracious reader. Her surroundings are a rather bizarre mix of Art Deco, modern and Southwestern generously interspersed with chaos and clutter. Glow in the dark stars vie with Star Trek memorabilia. Books spill from cabinets onto the floor. A telescope lurks in the office closet.

An Interview with Diana Kemp-Jones
by Cynthia Penn
SISTERS OF THE WIND by Diana Kemp-Jones is a breathtaking collection of fifteen science fiction stories united by themes of strong women rising to meet extraordinary challenges. Meet the powerful woman behind the collection. CP: You write science fiction short stories with a unique flare that I find remarkable. Tell me what inspired your collection of stories, SISTERS OF THE WIND? Diana: Though I've been writing since I was a child, I began seriously writing short stories in the late 80's as part of a course with the London School of Journalism. One story lead to another until I had produced a number of collections, though until recently, I never even realized I had focused so often on the strong woman theme. Inspired no doubt by some of my own experiences, I felt that I had the potential to create and interesting and appealing work, so I chose what I considered the most appropriate stories. CP: Everyone always has a favorite with such a diverse collection of stories. Tell me which is your personal favorite and what inspired it? Diana: "The Cull" always has and always will be my favorite, mostly because I see Seladon as my dynamic alter ego. We all conjure images of how we would ideally be, and she comprises the qualities I admire. She's not perfect, mind you, but she is a woman who has overcome daunting challenges and who ultimately follows her heart. I see a parallel with my own desire to write and my decision to follow my heart rather than abide by the more typical expectations of those around me.

She isn't just another author giving "lip service." SISTERS OF THE WIND SUBTERRANEAN HEARTBEATS Like Rose before her, Jones found the traditional avenues of publishing closed or in continual blockade. She now rides the tide of opportunity presented by the new wave of media in electronic publishing. Add three parts alien, one part spooky, a dash of bizarre and shake well. What do you get? The fertile imagination of Diana Kemp-Jones. Though primarily a male dominated genre, Jones shows she can write like the big boys and create vivid worlds that suck in the reader and doesn't spit them out until the last word is read. Set against a diversity of backgrounds, be the science fiction universe or the eerie netherworld of the paranormal, she has infused the characters with elements of herself and has drawn inspiration from a variety of life experiences. Aliens and shadowy creatures may abound, but are tempered by scenarios spun from a female point of view we all recognize - destructive relationships, infidelity, injustice, isolation, oppression, ambition, coming of age and more.

Very highly recommended SISTERS OF THE WIND by Diana Kemp-Jones is a breathtaking collection of fifteen science fiction stories united by themes of strong women rising to meet extraordinary challenges. With grace and panache, Kemp-Jones presents an amazingly unified collection of fifteen short stories that will challenge the reader's perceptions of the future. The future has degenerated into fierce control or its alternative chaos, depending upon which planet you inhabit. But in all cases, personal liberty has been curtailed and it takes an extraordinary show of spirit to effect change. On one hand, meet independent young women like Janaar in "Debutante", who refuses to submit to her society's demands, choosing rebellion that potentially leads to change in her whole world. Or meet young Nataya in "Donors" who becomes the leader of children to a New World. On the other hand, meet starship captain Saladon who risks death to save a planet from annihilation. Despite the pronounced differences in time and place between the world as we know it, and the world of Kemp-Jones' imaginative tale. Many themes are extremely contemporary. Universal questions such as how to balance between family and worldly responsibility dominate several stories. Raising children and the defiance of what is ethically wrong verses the celebration of what is ethically right also dominate many stories, including "Devil in the Heart," "Imarad," and "Mantris."

Sisters of the Wind by Diana Kemp-Jones Reviewed by sffworld.com The Alternate Universe of Diana Kemp-Jones "Sisters of the Wind" is really a collection of science fiction short stories. Reading these stories you'll find that Diana Kemp-Jones has managed to explore quite a few different angles to the science fiction theme. The stories ranges from die hard Star Trek type of science fiction in The Cull and Imarad to time travel in "Flying Visit" and dealing with extraterrestrial presence in Millenium's Child. In other words, with these and all the other stories that comprises "Sisters of the Wind", you've got it all. Common for all the stories is that the lead character is women. In many ways you can say that the stories isn't really about science fiction at all. Science fiction is just a setting for what I believe is the authors true intention behind all of these short stories, namely discussing women's position within the different future societies. Well, maybe not only in future societies, but also issues that is just as relevant in todays world. It's actually quite nice to see an author that doesn't write science fiction just for the sake of science fiction, but also brilliantly manages to mix it with believable characters as well as creating stories that's really more about human issues than anything else.

The Cull
A volley of heat seeking stingers whistled over the sheer edge of the towering glacier toward the fleeing targets below. Unprotected on the bleak expanse of tundra, the lone pair of polar gleatax galloped furiously, their eight mighty hooves thundering in the frozen air. Foam sprayed from their tusked muzzles, terror distending their intelligent gray eyes. The male gleatax whinnied and glanced at the advancing missiles. In desperation, he nuzzled his mate in an attempt to get her to separate. She balked, her whinny frantic as she stubbornly nudged closer to his flanks. The stingers closed formation, their sites strobing red as they locked on their targets and descended for the kill. No larger than bullets, a soft whine emanated as the missiles blurred into elongated streaks, spooking the mare. The stallion bolted, his powerful forelegs defiantly raised as he shielded his cowering mate. He extended the full twelve feet of his glory, chiseled muscles corded against his velvety charcoal coat. His platinum mane flowed proudly in the thin, reedy wind; his resonant whinny a challenge.
