63. JAMES KELMAN – TEN YEARS ON
james kelman – TEN YEARS ON. It´s ten years since james kelman won, in 1994, the Booker Prize with a polemical novel, How Late it Was, How Late.
http://www.ual.es/personal/jffernan/kelman.htm
JAMES KELMAN – TEN YEARS ON How Late it Was, How Late James Kelman was born in Glasgow in 1946, a city to which he turns once and again to place his fiction. His characters are taken from the working class, and despite the apparently limited scope of his work, both geographically and socially, he has managed to create a resonant body of work which transmits echoes of tragedy easy to grasp by readers across boundaries and cultures. How Late it Was, How Late Summary He gets up and starts walking, but suddenly he has a quarrel with a group of policemen, who arrest him and lock him up in a cell. There, at the police station, without an apparent reason, he loses his sight and becomes blind. The fight with the policemen might have triggered this physical reaction, but it is never made clear. When he is thrown out into the street, the painful journey home begins for this blind man. He lives with his girlfriend, Helen, in a flat, but when he manages to get there she has left him and he finds himself alone. He resolves to straighten up his life and buys himself a pair of sunglasses, manages to make a walking stick by cutting a broom, and tries to get by in his new situation. Heroically, he manages to get to the Social Security Offices in order to know what benefits is he entitled to for sightloss; but bureaucracy is monolithic and his encounters with civil servants should figure as representative examples of the impossibility of communication between human beings. Finally, an appointment with a doctor is arranged.

James Kelman:
The Good Times
hen I got off the bus there was this star shining. It was hardly even dark yet there it was shining away. I could make out the five points like how ye drew it as a kid. Seeing it ye knew how the prehistorics picked them out and gave them names. That was the way I felt looking at it right at that very moment, except I wouldnay have known which name to give it.
But it was like this was a special night. The moonlight through the trees. Now the cloud shifting fast. Imagine taking a taxi and missing it all. That was what happened to these people with money, they were too busy rushing here and there. It was them got left behind. They never saw the space, they never got the time. My auld man was right. Money was supposed to buy ye everything but naw it didnay. It was the lack, not having it. The poor inherit the earth. That is what the bible tells ye. Wrong, says my da, it's theirs already.
I breathed the dampness from the leaves and the grass. The smell of the river was in the air. What a night! People took alcohol, got stoned, shot junk into their veins. For what? For more than this? More than what I was experiencing right at that very moment? What would it matter if I didnt see her? What would it matter if I never saw her again in my whole life? Plus if every single friend she ever had, if every one was a lover? What would it matter?
I stopped walking and bowed my head, I was smiling at a certain thought, it always made me smile. I glanced up and for a moment my face was straight but then I chuckled and shook my head. I carried on walking. But it was definitely funny how it happened. How it crept up. Not like a bolt from the blue. That is one thing it wasnt because it was gradual, a really gradual thing; and when it arrived it was all-embracing.

James KILMAN of the Scots Brigade
Return to BULL Family History Move ahead to ELDER Family History My 5g-grandparents, James and Margaret KILMAN (or KELMAN), were from Scotland, possibly Banff. Compared to India, it is cold, wet and windswept. In the eighteenth century, like most of rural Britain, it would have been very primitive. Without electric light, a sewerage system, clean piped water or almost any machinery of any kind, it would have been a cold and harsh existence. Margaret had been born around 1766 and it is assumed that James was about the same age. They were probably married in the late 1790s, then shortly afterwards, a recruiting party came to town. The recruiting parties of the Scots Brigade were splendid affairs. They would march into a village or small rural town, all dressed up in their crimson coats with shiny brass buttons, with muskets on their shoulders and a brass band playing. The grizzled old sergeants would regale the townsfolk with stories of the glorious history of the Scots Brigade, which they claimed was the oldest British regiment, with tales of gallantry stretching back to 1599. For more information on the Scots Brigade, see the Regimental History . The young men who showed an interest would be told of excellent wages (for the time), exotic locations and adventures awaiting them. India, where the ancient regiment was stationed after two hundred years in Holland, would have sounded warm, inviting and very different from home. James KILMAN was one of those eager youths who signed up for a life of adventure and on 16th April 1800 he officially became a Private in the Scots Brigade. He and Margaret were immediately sent to India, arriving some three months later.

The DRIPPING LIPS featuring Brian James (Damned/Lords of the New Church) Brian James is one of the most influential punk rock musicians of the last two decades through his work with seminal bands such as the Damned and Lords Of The New Church. The DRIPPING LIPS by Enrik Poulsen
The band's first release, the original soundtrack to the movie "Abracadabra" (Indisc - DICD 3830, 1993), was released in Belgium only. With what appeared to be an effective zero-distribution-outside-of-Belgium campaign, this CD was virtually impossible to track down for all of us non-Belgians! Having been involved writing a soundtrack for a short film directed by Harry Cleven, Robbie Kelman was requested to do a punk-style score for Harry's first full feature film "Abracadabra". Robbie hooked up with "the best guitarist from the punk period", Brian James, and the two of them wrote the music for the soundtrack, which was subsequently recorded by the following line-up: Brian James (guitar), Robbie Kelman (vocals), Alan Lee Shaw (bass), and Paul Zahl (drums).
