record writing reading features ... contact James Patrick Kelly I met Jim Kelly at ConJose, 2002, and he was absolutely the kindest, most generous man you could imagine. He took a whole group of lost young writers under his wing, introduced them to people (and to each other), took a bunch of us out to dinner, and generally represented the very finest in fandom and the community of speculative fiction writers.
Perhaps my experience explains why Jim Kelly appears to know almost every single other author active in sci-fi on a first name basis. You can't turn over a website without finding someone mentioning Jim Kelly, and always with glowing words.
Kelly graduated from the University of Notre Dame and wrote proposals and did P.R. for an architectural firm. In 1977 he devoted himself full time to science fiction. His breakthrough piece was the short story "Solstice" published in Bruce Sterling's Mirrorshades
One of Kelly's other endeavors, these days, is his column on the web for Asimov's. I have always been a little puzzled by web columns in traditional media because, like, who is going to type in a two-hundred character URL from a magazine? Fortunately, it's a great column, and it is available on the web so that you can click the links.

"Strange But Not A Stranger," by James Patrick Kelly, Golden Gryphon Press, 2002, 297 pages James Patrick Kelly likes to push the limits. His new collection of stories, "Strange But Not A Stranger," is a showcase of work stretching the boundaries of the modern short story. From short shorts (complete stories under a 1,000 words) to narratives that go in separate time streams; from characters in laughable situations to characters that berate the reader, Kelly's fiction pushes science fiction ever forward.
One of the best stories in the book is the multi-nominated and much-anthologized "Undone." When asked, he admitted it was probably his favorite. "It is set a gajillion years in the future, more or less, and its heroine is able to undo time, that is, if she messes something up, she can skip back five minutes or five weeks and relive that part of her life. Time travel stories are just about guaranteed to twist your head." But only when done right, as the stories in this collection are.
Kelly's stories are fun to read and full of wit. The humor he often infuses into his fiction is smart and cumulative, building up to pay-offs that are funny and thought provoking at the same time. Humor is just one of the ways Kelly finds his audience.

Information Technology New and Old: James Patrick Kelly's Big Guy and E. M. Forster's The Machine Stops
Ever since the team Clinton/Gore came up with their suggestion for a "National Information Superhighway" during the Presidential campaign in 1992, information technology in general - and the Internet in particular - has been in the focus of the media in the United States. As a result of this, a vast majority of the American public is aware of information technology. The question arises though, whether this awareness also includes a knowledge of facts. A recent survey found that 57% of the interviewees did not know what cyberspace meant, yet at the same time 87% were certain that information technology had made their life better. Another indication of the ignorance of the public are the releases of the first major Hollywood productions on the topic in the summer of 1995. Movies like The Net or Virtuosity are plagued by numerous factual mistakes inadmissible for an informed audience. Science fiction authors, on the contrary, are faced with a much more sophisticated audience as a recent reader survey
