Golden Gryphon, ISBN 0-9655901-9-4, 1997, 275pp, US$22.95
A book review by Evelyn C. Leeper
This volume contains fourteen of Kelly's best stories, including two Hugo nominees and four Nebula nominees (a fifth, "Saint Theresa of the Aliens," is missing). The title story is the best known, and the most discussed, of all of them. Some see it as a response or follow-up to Tom Godwin's "Cold Equations." It can be seen that way, but the "equation" in Godwin's story is a function of the physical universe, while that of "Think Like a Dinosaur" is more artificially created. And in fact it's not a new idea, but has been part and parcel of teleportation discussions for a long time now. Kelly combines it well with an alien sub- plot, though, and makes it interesting from that perspective. The other stories represent the best of Kelley's work, and make it available in a permanent form. %T Think Like a Dinosaur %A James Patrick Kelly %C Collinsville IL %D 1997 %I Golden Gryphon %O hardback, US$22.95 %G ISBN 0-9655901-9-4 %P 275pp NESFA homepage Review Index More Reviews by Evelyn C. A book review by Elisabeth Carey
This is Kelly's latest collection of short fiction, and it makes me wonder why it is that I don't actively seek out his stories. As with an earlier collection, Think Like a Dinosaur and Other Stories , I enjoyed nearly every story in the book. The range here is pretty wide, magic realism, near-future cyber-thriller, alien biology, far-future superscience, and it's all good and nearly all excellent. Recommended. James Patrick Kelly - Jack of Genres by Jeremiah Tolbert Where have you come from, and where are you going? I was born in Mineola, New York and lived in bedroom towns around NYC until I left home for college. I've lived in New Hampshire since 1975 and intend to petition the Secretary of State to make me a native one of these days. I hope to drop dead writing - but not anytime soon. I have this vision of the last thing that anyone ever hears from me is what happens when my forehead hits the keyboard as;dlkfas[dpfqmwertq0tqwt0iqrt5 What was the inspiration for the title of your latest anthology, Strange, But Not a Stranger? I am a big Talking Heads fan. If you are too, then you know. The afterword of your latest collection mentions that you have written several plays based on your short fiction. Could you share with us some of your experiences crossing over from the world of genre writing into theatre? What have you liked and disliked about working in these areas? I like most everything about the theater. I like the collaboration of talented artists across various disciplines and the community that inevitably forms among the cast of a project. I've been personally involved in many of the productions of my work. And yes, I especially like the applause, since writers very rarely get that kind of visceral feedback. I guess the only thing I don't like is how evanescent theater is. I hate watching great performances evaporate. You can reprint a story or a novel, but you can never duplicate a performance. You can only recreate it.

James Patrick Kelly
BIO
Jim has had an eclectic writing career. He has written novels, short stories, essays, reviews, poetry, plays and planetarium shows. His novels include PLANET OF WHISPERS, (1984), FREEDOM BEACH with John Kessel (1985), LOOK INTO THE SUN (1989), and WILDLIFE (1994). He has published two short story collections, HEROINES (1990) and THINK LIKE A DINOSAUR AND OTHER STORIES (1997) which is hot off the presses from Golden Gryphon and which would make a wonderful gift for your brother, or maybe your cousin Betty. He has written more than forty stories, which have been translated into eleven languages. He has won the ASIMOV'S SCIENCE FICTION MAGAZINE Readers' Awards four times. On the other hand, he's been nominated for the Nebula a bunch of times, but has never won. On the third hand, his novelette "Think Like A Dinosaur" won the Hugo Award in 1996. He lives in Portsmouth, New Hampshire with his wife Pamela and his teenagers Maura, Jamie and John. Here are some things about Jim that didn't seem to fit anywhere else: He likes to spend as much time as possible underwater (see photo, above.) He survived being both an altar boy and a Boy Scout. He is an avid gardener, skier and roller blader. His favorite TV show is Dr. Katz. He wears a size nine and a half shoe. His personal best in the ten kilometer run is 41:38. His favorite breakfast is French toast. He knew the Patriots were going to lose the Super Bowl last year. Oh, and he loves talking to his readers.

I 'm in love. Theodore Sturgeon, John Varley, maybe even R. A. Heinlein when his sexism wasn't showing these are the writers that James Patrick Kelly's stories bring to mind. In "10 to 1" a young boy receives a visitor from the future. As in many such stories, the world needs saving. It's not really a new idea, but one of Kelly's strengths is character. The viewpoint character would be the stereotypical nerdy SF fan of the early '60s, except he is fleshed out with personal touches. We know his nicknames, what happened when he said "albeit" in class, where he lives, and what he thinks about his alcoholic mother and competent but distant dad. (Kelly's characters have depth, and they evoke empathy even when they are not entirely likable. For instance, Phillip Wing, the protagonist of "Glass Cloud" is a self-centered prick. He's not someone I would want to be, but he is a real person.) By the way, I also like the ending of "10 to 1," but I can't tell you why. Read the book.

    Wildlife
    by James Patrick Kelly
Wildlife has a wonderful cover, a crisp collage of bright images, including a spaceship, a ravelling DNA double helix, and the Statue of Liberty, all of which are relevant to the story. Unfortunately, the cover is the most likable thing about the book. As the story opens, video journalist Wynne Cage is escaping from a space station where she accompanied a data thief who has just stolen WILDLIFE, a collection of data which may or may not be the key to true artificial intelligence. From this less-than-original start, the novel keeps sinking even deeper into a morass of cliche's about sex, drugs, and AI. The first section of the book is from Wynne's point of view, and covers her escape, her developing love affair with the twisted man who commissioned the raid, and her loathing for herself and her father. The second section takes place several years earlier, and is told from the point of view of her father, Tony Cage, a rich and famous designer of recreational drugs. The third section jumps forward about a hundred years and centers on Wynne's son Peter and his bizarre relationship with Wynne. The fourth and final section centers on Wynne again, except that by this time there are several of her, not all of which are legally alive. The effect of all this skipping around in time is to give an overview of the social and technological changes over a century, although the society viewed is primarily that of the filthy rich. ("My dear Wynne, money only gets filthy if you let the grubs handle it.")
