strange but not a stranger
Welcome to my slice of c-space. I'm a writer. I write stories, novels, poems, essays, reviews, plays, planetarium shows and now ... a web site. Insofar as I'm known at all, it's for my science fiction and fantasy. I've published four novels and more than sixty short stories. In general I enjoy the writing life a lot, but I do have one complaint. Sometimes it seems as though the stuff I write has the shelf life of lettuce! A story appears in a magazine and a month or so later it winds up in a corner of some basement or the landfill. Even books come and go with alarming speed. That's why I wanted a web page: so I can get some of my stuff out of the filing cabinet and back under the eyes of readers. So help yourself to whatever piques your interest and thanks for stopping by. Version 05.26.04 email me! Creative Commons License

T he best of James Patrick Kelly's short stories verge on the surreal while remaining firmly based in plausible speculations and extrapolations from the present. Kelly depicts a world where the human quest for difference generates a seemingly endless array of gangs, cults, and subcultures, each struggling to distinguish itself through various forms of body modifications. He shows us a place where divorced fathers create androids to make up for the children they have lost, where the design of drugs has become an art and their marketing a big business. He takes us to a frightening time, just a few years from now, where aging baby boomers cower in their apartments, afraid to leave, because the streets belong to the young, who are enraged to have inherited a world of diminished options and depleted resources. After graduating from the University of Notre Dame, Kelly worked as a proposal writer and P.R. man for a Massachusetts-based architectural firm. Since 1977 he has been a full time science fiction writer. Many science fiction fans first became aware of Kelly's talents when his story, "Solstice," was included in Bruce Sterling's landmark

ISBN: 1930846126 Check out website: www.goldengryphon.com A new book by James Patrick Kelly is always a reason to be happy. It has been five years since JPK's 'Think Like a Dinosaur' was released and a disheartening eight years since his latest novel, 'Wildlife', came out. It is quite depressing how some of the best authors in SF seem to be relegated to small press releases at long intervals. Most of JPK's output is in the form of short stories and since single author anthologies are difficult to sell, this dooms him unfairly to the margins of the SF water-hole. At least publishers like Golden Gryphon, founded by the late Jim Turner (1945-1999) in 1997, are willing to step to fill a role larger publishers are barred from filling by market realities. I could go on at great length about why people should buy good single author anthologies but instead I will let this collection serve as an example of what people are missing. This collects works from the 1980s, 1990s and the 2000s with a bias towards later works. Two of the works included appeared as portions of JPK novels. 'The Prisoner of Chillon' appeared in a slightly different version in 'Wildlife' and 'Glass Cloud' was incorporated as the first section of 'Look Into the Sun'. My favourite story in the collection is '10^16 to 1', in which a young boy is given the chance to avert a future and terminal WWIII at a terrible cost to himself and his world. There are other gems as well.

New-fashioned romantic James Patrick Kelly smokes, but never inhales
By Nick Gevers ames Patrick Kelly is one of American SF's most capable short-fiction writers. His stylish, lucid and topically diverse stories, which began to appear in the mid-1970s, had by the mid-1980s made him a creative name to be reckoned with; they have been collected in Heroines Think Like a Dinosaur and Other Stories (Golden Gryphon Press, 1997) and, most recently, Strange But Not a Stranger , published, again by Golden Gryphon, in September 2002. His novels, in most cases building upon stories and novellas central to his shorter oeuvre, are Freedom Beach (1986, written with John Kessel), the two interlinked "Messenger Chronicles," Planet of Whispers (1984) and Look Into the Sun (1989), and the cyberpunk-inflected Wildlife (1994). He writes a regular column, "On the Net," for Asimov's magazine, surveying science-fictional and related resources available on the World Wide Web. Science Fiction Weekly interviewed Kelly by e-mail in August 2002, concentrating on
