AMHERST, Mass.— The Amherst College Creative Writing Center will conclude its Fall Reading Series with an appearance by poet Brigit Pegeen Kelly on Monday, Dec. 2, at 8 p.m. in the Babbott Room at the Octagon. Poet James Merrill admired Kelly’s “exuberant way with words” and her poetic reflection of “the wild, transforming eye of childhood.” He was not alone; Kelly’s astonishing, visionary poetry has won a number of awards. Her collection Song was the 1994 Lamont Poetry Selection of the Academy of American Poets, and her first book of poems, To the Place of Trumpets , was selected by Merrill in 1988 for the Yale Series of Younger Poets. Kelly teaches at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. The Amherst College Creative Writing Center puts on a yearly reading series featuring both emerging and established authors. The Center’s Website is at http://www.amherst.edu/~cwc

ABIDING MYSTERY
- Three Poems from Best American Poetry 2003 - Citizens, this will not do: when I put a search on “poetry” and “mystery” a porn site tops the list. Or at least it looks to be that – I didn’t click. What info appears suggests there may be an X-rated model out there working her way through college under the alias Ms. Poetry Mystery. That’s always the way of it. Many want to appropriate the idea of poetry, its charged aura, its mystery – or else they just like the word “poetry”. But few want to support it, or read it. The cheap phonies. After that list came many sites offering poetry books and mystery novels. I’d had in mind some reference to this: the abiding mystery around which so many poems revolve. Poets touch upon it, gesture towards it, but, wisely, almost never try to solve or resolve it, the way the mathematician, physician or private investigator strive to solve the equation, diagnose the problem, or crack the case. Poets survey a realm of mystery I hardly know how to name. I can only say it has to do with the oddness of life on earth, the fluid and shifting nature of perception, one’s own curious fantastical existence, and the confounding, unaccountable existence of others. (And it seems others do exist because often when I dial a number a voice speaks out of the receiver –

    Lecture Series Topics
    Surrealism with Dean Young

    Thursday, October 23, 4 P.M., Woods Memorial Library, 3455 N. 1st Ave.
Free and open to the public. This lecture will be a short overview of surrealism: its precursors; historic and theoretic basis; multinational occurrences; and its manifestations and mutations into the present. Maybe a trapdoor will open in the sky.
    Translating History with Eavan Boland

    Thursday, November 20, 4 P.M., T/PPL Main Library, 101 N. Stone Ave.
Free and open to the public. In this lecture, we will look at some poems by German women poets after the Second World War, and give consideration to how the agenda of the political poem is subtly altered when it becomes not only a response to a public event but also a record of deeply private and largely unheeded losses.
The Persons of the Poem with Michael Palmer

    Thursday, January 29, 4 p.m., Himmel Park Library, 1035 N. Treat Ave.
