His first book, Deadly Sacrifice , is now in book stores. Jack Curry Kean was born in Columbus, Mississippi, in 1946, on January 26. He was named after his father. Kean grew up on a dairy farm with his mother, Eloise Kean, his two sisters, brother, and father. Kean's mother is currently living in Starkville, Mississippi, and is seventy-five years of age (Kean). Kean attended Starkville High School and participated in the following: the Latin club, S-club, and the exchange club. He also played football for four years. He was also the class president, speech club president, and student advisory council president. He graduated from Starkville High School in 1964 (SHS yearbook: 1964). John (Jack) Kean Years at WGBH: 1958 - 1968 Position(s): Engineer Dear Don: It was wonderful to hear a voice from the past and to know you have made such a great life for yourself. We vacationed on Maui for several years during the 1970s, so I know how nice it can be to live there. I finally left GBH in 1968 to go to Connecticut , where I have been ever since, first as director of engineering until 1986, then manager of technical planning, a consultant role, until now. I am still carried as a full time employee, but I actually put in between fifteen and twenty hours a week as a consultant to them, plus a few hours for others. Along the way, I got involved with a lot of national stuff, representing PBS on numerous technical standards committees for many tears and serving as a consultant to them on various FCC ATV working parties from 1986 until 1990, as the high definition broadcast standard was developed. For me, a guy with not a great deal of education, its been a terrific run! I still pinch myself sometimes and wonder if it all happened! For me, the WGBH experience was key to everything that followed. It was a very

Disregarding Over 55 and similar publications, I immediately grabbed the Esquire . After fully appreciating the cover photo, I found my attention drawn to a very large teaser for 14 pages guaranteed to make me a better man. While I’m not totally convinced I need to become a better man, others may have a contrary opinion. Was it possible that any of these 14 pages could apply to me? I quickly thumbed to the section in question and began learning what it would take to become a better man. The first article was titled, “How To Disarm A Gunman.” Excuse me? Here it is the twenty-first century and the measure of a man is whether he can disarm a gunman? I don’t think so. After a career in law enforcement I can assure you that attempting to disarm a gunman ought to be darn near the last thing on earth you want to do. If this is something that comes up in your life on a regular basis, trust me, you are doing something wrong. “How To Fire Someone” was the second winning entry.

"With a real sick feeling in my stomach I drove on back to the creek. You know how sometimes you just know that something bad has happened? Well, that's the way I felt. I walked up one side of the creek and down the other. I was almost ready to quit when I saw a black garbage bag hung on some roots just at the base of the bank. I climbed down and looked at that bag a long time before getting up the nerve to open it. I don't think a human being could live long enough to forget what I saw in that bag." Like he sometimes did, the sheriff just sat there for a while lost in his memories. It was the first and only time I saw the barest hint of a tear trickle down his cheek. In a couple of minutes he composed himself and continued the story.
