44. Bold Type: Interview With Jackie Kay
boldtype. old Type What is Trumpet about? jackie kay A jazz trumpeter, Joss Moody, who lived his life as a man; when he died it was discovered he was a woman.
http://www.randomhouse.com/boldtype/0499/kay/interview.html
old Type: What is Trumpet about?
Jackie Kay: A jazz trumpeter, Joss Moody, who lived his life as a man; when he died it was discovered he was a woman. The only character who knew about this is his widow, Millie. The story is told from her point of view, and their adopted son, Colman's, who didn't know. Trumpet is all about the effect that his secret has on various different characters' ordinary lives: the registrar, the drummer, the cleaner, the tabloid journalist.
BT: Whose story did you want to tell through Trumpet Joss's, Millie's or everybody who was effected by the aftermath of Moody's death and the revelation of his secret?
JK: I wanted to tell a story, the same story, from several points of view. I was interested in how a story can work like music and how one note can contain the essence of the whole. I wanted to write a novel whose structure was very close to jazz itself. So the registrar, the drummer, the cleaner all interested me because they gave the same story a different note.
I started out with two main stories thoughMillie's grief and Colman's rage. I only ever wanted to tell Joss's story through the eyes of everyone else.

A beautiful melody of a book, Bessie Smith by Jackie Kay evokes the life of the great blueswoman through a provocative interweaving of fact, poetry, blues lyrics, and imaginings. It is also about the awakening of a young girl's (the author's) sense of herself as female and black. If you prefer dry facts only, or are doing serious research, look to another biography. If there's a bit of repetition in this book, well, think about the blues. If you want to immerse yourself in Bessie's blues, rea...

Tumbleweed Tom on the Texas Trail

I used this book in my 2nd grade class as we did a real short unit on Texas. My students and I took a "field trip" all across Texas. Tom travels through the Lonestar state collecting various Texas treasures. I loved this book and my class really enjoyed it also. It's a great way to teach the symbols of Texas.

'Big Milk'
Jackie Kay
The baby wasn't really a baby any more except in the mind of the mother, my lover. She was two years old this wet summer and already she could talk buckets. She even had language for milk. Big Milk and Tiny Milk. One day I saw her pat my lover's breasts, in a slightly patronizing fashion, and say, 'Silly, gentle milk.' Another day we passed a goat with big bells round its neck in a small village near the Fens. The light was strange, mysterious. The goat looked like a dream in the dark light. The baby said, 'Look, Big Milk, look, there's a goat!' The baby only ever asked Big Milk to look at things. Tiny Milk never got a look in. I'm not bothered about her hair. I am not bothered about not going out any more, anywhere. The pictures, pubs, restaurants, the houses of friends. I don't care that I don't have friends any more. Friends without babies are carrying on their ridiculous, meaningless lives, pretending their silly meetings, their silly movies, their crazy avant-garde theatre matters. Tottering about the place totally without roots. Getting a haircut at Vidal Sassoon to cheer themselves up. Or spending a whole summer slimming. Or living for the two therapy hours per week. That's what they are up to. A few of them still bang away at ideas that matter to them. But even they sound tired when they talk about politics. And they always say something shocking to surprise me, or themselves. I don't know which. I don't see any of them any more.

Jakie and Kay
I lowered myself as close to the ground as I could. I made out the bird’s shape as it hopped about the grass, picking at the bread crumbs laid out for him and taking them to its nest. Foolish bird. I felt the dirt sift soundlessly as I dragged my claws slowly and softly through them. Almost time. Then, just as I was ready to make the kill, arms scooped me up from my middle. Human arms. Blasted humans. Never realized that their timing was particularly awful. "Hello, Kay," Jakie cooed. Jakie was my owner. Or, to be more correct, my human. The humans never knew who the real owner was. It was so easy to train them, even the young ones. Of course, Jakie was no longer what I loosely called 'young.' She was growing taller, but more mature as well. She didn’t chase after me or tease me or poke at me anymore. She picked me up at the worst of times and held me, talking. She took me into the house. I was used to it by now. Jakie set me down on the floor, so her hands would be free to open a can of tuna. I forgave Jakie for her human ignorance the moment I realized that I was getting the whole can. Usually we shared it. Jakie took half and made herself a sandwich, giving me the other half. But not today, the tuna was all mine. Jackie opened the fridge and pulled out two things that benefited both of us: milk and a can of pop. She poured the milk in a saucer, and, in her great gift of balance, carried the soda, the tuna, the milk, and a Mr. Goodbar

Jackie Kay
Born 1961, in Edinburgh, Scotland.
British poet, playwright, and novelist. Her mother was Scottish and her father was Nigerian. She was adopted by a white couple and brought up in Glasgow. Her adopted parents were communists who took their children on anti-apartheid protests and peace rallies. She studied English at Stirling University. She left Scotland partly because of her feeling that it lacked multi-cultural harmony and she wanted a more accepting environment for her son, Matthew, who was born in 1988. She moved to London and took various jobs including cleaning and hospital portering. She has written for the stage, including for Gay Sweatshop . In 1985 she was commissioned by the Theatre of Black Women to write a half-hour play. After sending the draft to them they asked her to extend it to an hour, which she did. This was read at a public rehearsal under the title The Meeting Place during the Gay Sweatshop Times Ten Festival in 1985. Members of Gay Sweatshop subsequently worked on the play for four weeks to arrive at a more polished version called Chiaroscuro . Jackie Kay took it through many more drafts to reach the final version which was performed by the Theatre of Black Women in 1986 at the Soho Polytechnic in London. Her next play
