Bob Kaufman Bob Kaufman was born on this date in 1925. He was an African-American poet.
He was born Robert Garnell Kaufman in New Orleans, LA. He has been described as an "innovative poet" and an important writer who gained his prominence during the “Beat period.” As a youth, Kaufman had the opportunity to gain exposure to a wide variety of religions. His father was German-Jewish, his mother was Roman Catholic and his grandmother was a practitioner of voodoo. Eventually however, Kaufman developed an interest in eastern religions and like many of the other Beat writers, became a Buddhist.
In 1958, Kaufman moved to San Francisco and quickly became acclimated to the lifestyle led by many of the writers and artists who were prominent during the Beat period. Much of his writing became "surreal" and was often inspired by jazz music. He published Crowded with Loneliness and founded a magazine called Beatitude in 1965. Kaufman was most popular among European readers during the 1960's and published his second collection, Golden Sardine in 1967. After witnessing the assassination of John F. Kennedy, Kaufman was compelled to take a vow of silence, which it is said was unbroken until the end of the Viet Nam War.
His writing became political again and he produced a collection that included early works called The Ancient Rain: Poems, 1956-78 1981. It is said that in 1978 Kaufman once again resumed his silence and seldom broke the sacred vow until his death on January 12, 1986 in San Francisco, CA.

Origins: One would be hard-pressed to think of any other entertainer who sowed as much doubt about his true character than comedian Andy Kaufman did in the 1970s and 1980s. He adopted multiple personas and stayed in character even when he was off-stage. He performed as other people. Or he had other people perform as him. Or maybe he was performing as other people pretending to be him. He staged tantrums and altercations so convincingly that audiences were left wondering whether his flare-ups were rehearsed routines or genuinely spontaneous outbursts of anger. In the end, he blurred the division between Andy Kaufman and Andy Kaufman's comic creations so thoroughly that much of the public was no longer sure which was which.
16 May 1984, a 35-year-old Andy Kaufman died of lung cancer at Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. His remains were returned to New York for interment at Beth David Cemetery. His

Method or Madness?
Bob Kaufman's In-Your-Face Political Activism
Forty-seven years ago, when A. Robert Kaufman joined a picket line demanding integration of the old Ford's Theater, protest was easy. "It was the right thing to do," says Kaufman. Back in 1947 when the boycott of Baltimore's premiere theater began, it was house policy to only allow blacks seating in the last rows of the second balcony. "Somebody had to do it, somebody challenged me to do it, and so I went down there and picketed." The same urge prompted Kaufman to march over to Baltimore City Community College in February. There he protested a speech by Nation of Islam minister Khallid Abdul Muhammad, infamous for his recent anti-Semitic and anti-Catholic remarks at Kean College. His convictions also led him to Walbrook High School about a month later, when black Wellesley professor Tony Martin arrived to broadcast his dubious version of the truth about Jews. Although Kaufman calls himself an atheist and has been very critical of the Jewish community in the past, he decided that their demagoguery could not remain unchallenged. Yet the protest business is not what it used to be.

Have you been caught in the "worship wars"? If so, you're no alone. How do you measure "effective" worship- is it even possible? Is genuine worship a matter of musical style? How do you define a worship leader's role? What are the standards for participation in congregational worship? And, more importantly, what does the Bible say about worship? These topics and others are addressed in this collection of messages on worship theology from Bob Kauflin, Director of Worship Development for Sovereign Grace Ministries (formerly PDI Ministries), and author of the Internet column Worship Matters. They are taken from messages originally given at the "A Passion for te Glory of God" worship conferences.

The Line Between

(Whaling City Sound)
A Different Look is tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi 's fourth trio recording in a row for Double Time Records. All three use tenor sax, organ and drums. The material here, all Bergonzi originals, was recorded at the same two-day recording session that produced his previous album, Wiggy. Bergonzi's post-bop style compositions work well with his forceful, full toned playing. Organist Don Wall and drummer Adam Nussbaum are quite compatible with Bergonzi and have played with him since 1996. (Wall and Nussbaum have also played with guitarist John Abercrombie since the early 1990's). Wall's subtlety and understatement work effectively with Bergonzi's brashness. The album opens with the up-tempo "Just Friends," which has some strong tenor soloing right out of the gate. Wall has a nice organ solo and there's some trading fours at the end. They then play a ballad, "You Can Tell," and go back up-tempo with "Con Brio" which has another strong solo from Bergonzi as well as being a feature for Wall's organ playing. Other highlights: Bergonzi's serpentine writing and playing on "I Ching Reading" remind me of Wayne Shorter. Bergonzi's playing is thick and concentrated and the tune has a complicated harmony.

Bob Kaufman’s O-Jazz-O

billboard texts, well- it is Surrealism after all!
At the nexus of this discombobulation of verse stands Bob Kaufman- a black Jew who was a failure at virtually everything he ever did. His life’s tale?: Bob Kaufman, or more accurately, Robert Garnell Kaufman, was born on April 18, 1925 in New Orleans, LA and died January 12, 1986 in San Francisco, CA. Kaufman has been described as an "innovative poet" and an important writer who gained his prominence during the Beat period. As a youth, Kaufman had the opportunity to gain exposure to a wide variety of religions. His father was German-Jewish, his mother was Roman Catholic and his grandmother was a practitioner of voodoo. He was one of 13 children born to a German Jewish father and a Black Catholic mother. He ran away from home and joined the Merchant Marines when he was 13, and circled the globe 9 times in the next 20 years.

Andy Kaufman
Born on January 17, 1949, Andy Kaufman lived his life in the hazy borderland between comedian and performance artist. Throughout his career, he insisted that he was not a comedian, yet he staged most of his performances in comedy clubs and on comedic television shows. While Kaufman is known primarily for comedy, his most lasting contribution grew out of his obsession with Elvis Presley . Kaufman first became infatuated with Elvis in the 1950s, and in 1969 hitchhiked to Las Vegas to meet the fat, drug-addled King. Unconfirmed stories hold that Kaufman hid inside a kitchen cabinet and popped out when Elvis wandered by, likely giving his bloated majesty a near-coronary. Kaufman's fetish for Elvis manifested itself in his stage act. Starting in nightclubs and eventually continuing on to network television, Andy created an entirely new genre of hell for the American people: Elvis impersonation. He was the first person to publicly, and repeatedly perform in the garb and persona of Elvis Presley. Today, thousands of fat retarded losers follow in Kaufman's misled footsteps. Thanks, Andy. In college, Kaufman began transcendental meditation, and found it to help relieve his stage fright. He meditated religiously before appearing on stage, and often attended transcendental meditation seminars. He graduated in 1971 with an associates degree in applied science.

WHEN ALLEN GINSBERG arrived in San Francisco in August 1954, the famed San Francisco poetry scene was thriving with such luminaries as Kenneth Rexroth, Robert Duncan, and William Everson. Ginsberg's recitation of Howl in November 1955, at the Six Gallery, galvanized that community and brought the Beat aesthetic to the West Coast: this signaled an era that would become known as the San Francisco Renaissance. A number of the younger poets followed Ginsberg's example and began producing poetry that owed more to the Beat experience of New York than to the older, established poets of San Francisco.
First Poem
Peter Orlovsky
ALLEN GINSBURG MET twenty-year-old Peter Orlovsky within a year of his arrival in San Francisco, and the two quickly became inseparable. Orlovsky traveled with Ginsberg to Tangiers to help Burroughs work on Naked Lunch and accompanied him on subsequent journeys to India, Nepal, and Japan. Peter Orlovsky, like his New York counterparts, Cassady, Huncke, and Solomon, contributed more to the Beat movement through his presence than from his actual literary output.
A Coney Island of The Mind
Lawrence Ferlinghetti
LAWRENCE FERLINGHETTI ATTENDED Columbia University at the same time as Allen Ginsberg and Jack Keroauc, but apparently never made their acquaintance. He shared with them a love of avant-garde literature, travel to exotic places, and libertarian pacifist politics; but he never identified himself as a Beat. In 1953 Ferlinghetti, with Peter D. Martin, founded a bookstore in San Francisco that sold only paperbacks called City Lights (after Charlie Chaplin's movie of the same name). After buying out Martin in 1955, Ferlinghetti began publishing a series of avant-garde poetry and fiction under the imprint of City Lights Books. Howl by Allen Ginsberg was number four in the series and became City Lights Books' first major success. A highly successful poet himself, Ferlinghetti published most of the influential Beat writers, including Kerouac, Burroughs, Corso, Snyder, Di Prima, and Jones.
