Social justice work engages, energizes
by Donald E. Skinner
Dennis Dixon, of Tacoma, Washington, remembers the moment that social justice work became real to him. "It was the first time I went down to a soup kitchen to help out. I saw four hundred people standing in line. Just seeing that they were not all the stereotypical down-and-out men, but that many were neatly dressed families with children, brought home to me how close we all are to that edge." For his wife, Holly Galbreath, her moment came as she was helping organize a local Million Mom March for gun control. "As they read the names of children who had died through gun violence I looked down at my own children and had absolute clarity about why I was there." Dennis and Holly are social justice committee cochairs of their congregation, the Unitarian Universalist Association of Tacoma. The 155-member congregation's social action has waxed and waned over the years depending on the available enthusiasm; currently it's on the upswing. With new mission and vision statements that call the congregation to be involved in the community, a new minister, and completion of the Welcoming Congregation program, the congregation has found new energy. In the past year Tacoma friends and members have been helping clean up a local Superfund pollution site, feeding the homeless, and walking in antihunger fundraisers. In the fall many members went door to door in the congregation's neighborhood in an effort to defeat an antigay ballot measure. Other projects planned this year include asking people to give up discretionary spending for a voluntary simplicity week and participating in America's Promise, a national program to help youth.

E-Mail This Article Published on Sunday, March 12, 2000 in the Des Moines Register Where's The Justice? by Donald Kaul Last week, the economy was booming. Employment was way up, as was the stock market, inflation was down, productivity had ascended dizzying heights and consumer confidence was hunky-dory. Things were just the way Americans like them: the rich were getting richer and the poor . . . were getting poorer more slowly. But not to worry; we have a man whose job it is to fix all that. His name is Alan Greenspan, and he is the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board. He is there to prevent the outbreak of excessive prosperity, and he is good at what he does. He was at it again last week. In a speech on "the new economy" at a Boston College conference, he again promised to keep raising interest rates until the galloping economy lies down, rolls over and plays dead. He didn't use those exact words, but that was the sense of it. The stock market immediately tanked. Greenspan is under the impression that part of the reason people are out there buying, buying, buying is that they are making so much money in the stock market that they feel rich. He further believes that it is his duty to disabuse them of that delusion - by making them poorer.

Oblivion: On Writers and Writing

by
R. C. Travis ISBN: 1-885266-60-X "I see now that criticism can be of enormous value
in helping to define and refine one's own thinking; and
there is always the chance, if the criticism is any good,
that it might do the same for others."

- Donald Justice For several months we have been discussing the importance of reading the work of other poets. I find it also important that one read books of criticism and commentary in order to get a glimpse into who a poet is as a person. By discovering who they are and how they think, we can also get a better image into why they write as they do and also why they have been able to achieve their level of success. In doing this, we can then learn from the masters what we need to become better writers. This month I would like to introduce you to Donald Justice and his book of critical prose, Oblivion (Story Line Press, 1998). The book is divided into three sections. The first section is a series of critical essays on different types of writing, such as meter, free verse, and prose. Justice also, within these essays, discusses specific writers and tackles the question of obscurity and oblivion. In his chapter on meters he discusses the precise use and value of meter and also states that the poem does not retain value or memory merely because it has meter. "The choice whether or not to use meters is as likely to be dictated by literary fashion as by depth of feeling or sincerity . . . The meters move along in their own domain, scarcely intersecting the domain of meaning, except in some illusory fashion or by virtue of conventions nearly private. The responsibility they bear to the sense, comic writing aside, is mostly not to interfere . . . meters do accompany the sense, like a kind of percussion only, mostly noise. Over and above syntax, they bind the individual words together, and the larger structural parts as well, over and above whatever appearance of logic survives in the argument; as a result, the words and parts seem to cohere . . . How they assist the recollection is by fixing it in permanent, or would-be permanent, form."

Donald Pendleton Fifteen years
14 December 2001 Man freed after law lords
quash murder verdict
By Robert Verkaik, Legal Affairs Correspondent A man sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a Bradford newspaper seller 30 years ago was freed yesterday after the House of Lords quashed his conviction. Donald Pendleton, 56, has spent the past 15 years in prison for taking part in the killing of Bernard Clark, 39, whose body was dumped in a ditch after he was attacked and robbed of his watch in 1971. Yesterday, the law lords ruled that the evidence he was convicted on was unsafe. Lawyers for Mr Pendleton, including Michael Mansfield QC, who represented him at the House of Lords hearing, said the ruling could help others who had had their cases turned down by the Court of Appeal. Mr Pendleton had been eliminated by the police from their murder inquiry in 1971 but 14 years later he was arrested and charged when another man suspected of the killing allegedly implicated him in the crime. The law lords described Mr Pendleton as a "vulnerable man" who had been questioned by police for a number of hours without the presence of a solicitor. Lord Bingham of Cornhill, the senior law lord, said Mr Pendleton had first told police that he was not at the scene of the crime but, after further questioning, had changed his mind – although he always maintained he did not take part in the violence. When his case came to trial, he returned to his first story, that he was nowhere near the crime scene but his lawyers advised him that, without any evidence to support an alibi, the jury would have trouble believing him and so Mr Pendleton did not have the chance to go into the witness box to justify his changed story.

Donald Justice was born in Miami, Florida, in 1925. A graduate of the University of Miami,He is the award winning author of eight books of poetry, the first five of which are represented in his New and Selected Poems,.During his career teaching he held positions at The University of Florida, The University of Miami, The University of Iowa, and Syracuse University among other institutions. Retired since 1992 he currently resides in Iowa.. This probably his best remembered poem is surely a haunting observation of societies institutionalisation of the mentaly ill...In the closed confines of the asylum where patients are stripped of the dignity of making their own decisions where only the strongest willed are able to attempt to challenge the domination of mind controling drugs with only the albeit futilite resistance of uttering or thinking "No No No No" to punctuate their days..heres the link to the page with the sound poem. Regards.

The Assassination It begins again, the nocturnal pulse. It courses through the cables laid for it. It mounts to the chandeliers and beats there, hotly. We are too close. Too late, we would move back. We are involved with the surge. Now it bursts. Now it has been announced. Now it is being soaked up by newspapers. Now it is running through the streets. The crowd has it. The woman selling carnations And the man in the straw hat stand with it in their shoes. Here is the red marquee it sheltered under. Here is the ballroom, here The sadly various orchestra led By a single gesture. My arms open. It enters. Look, we are dancing. (June 5
