Coming back to.
At rest on a stair landing,
They feel it
Moving beneath them now like the deck of a ship,
Though the swell is gentle.
And deep in mirrors The rediscover The face of the boy as he practices trying His father’s tie there in secret And the face of that father, Still warm with the mystery of lather. They are more fathers than sons themselves now. Something is filling them, something That is like the twilight sound Of the crickets, immense, Filling the woods at the foot of the slope Behind their mortgaged houses. - photo by Herman LeRoy Emmet

Happiness: The Aesthetics of Donald Justice In his first book, The Summer Anniversaries , he took on traditional forms like the sonnet, the sestina, and the villanelle, and for each, particularly the sestina and the villanelle, enlivened the forms through variations. A sestina might drop its envoy, a villanelle might become even more demanding in an abbreviated form. Verse itself was a heuristic game, as it probably always should be, so that in a poem like "In Bertram's Garden," one realizes that most of the possibilities of the tetrameter line have been explored, and all of them beautifully. Soon the purple dark must bruise
Lily and bleeding heart and rose,
And the little Cupid lose
Eyes and ears and chin and nose,
And Jane lie down with others soon
Naked to the naked moon.
"In Bertram's Garden"

Donald Justice cesto u svojem pjesnistvu govori o usamljenosti, ludilu, ocaju, uzasu i slicno, covjek bi pomislio kako je rijec o iskustvenom pjesniku ciji stihovi odisu ispovjednim tonovima. To CV - Donald Black Sociological Justice by Donald Black That discrimination exists in courts of law is beyond dispute. In american murder cases, for instance, studies show that blacks who kill a white are much more likely to receive the death penalty than if they kill a black. Indeed, in Georgia, they are 30 times more likely to be condemned, and in Texas a staggering 90 times more likely. Conversely, in Texas, of 143 whites convicted of killing a black, only one was sentenced to die. But how extensive is discrimination in the courtroom? Is it strictly a matter of racial prejudice, or does it respond to a wide range of social factors? In Sociological Justice , eminent legal sociologist Donald Black challenges the conventional notion that law is primarily an affair of rules and that discrimination is an aberration. Law, he contends, is a social process in which bias is inherent. Indeed, Black goes well beyond the documented instances of racial discrimination to show how social status (regardless of race), the degree of intimacy (are they family members, friends, or complete strangers?), speech, organization, and numerous other factors all greatly influence whether a complaint will be filed in court, who will win, and what the punishment or other remedy will be. Moreover, he extends his analysis to include not only the litigants, but also the lawyers, the jurors, and the judge, describing how

Executive summary
New Zealand has garnered international acclaim for its youth justice processes. In particular, the New Zealand invention of the "family group conference (FGC)" for youth offenders has been hailed as a pioneering model of restorative justice. As an American prosecutor, I came to New Zealand this year specifically to study the FGC and other restorative justice initiatives in New Zealand. I have become convinced that restorative justice processes work and should be pursued as a matter of criminal justice policy. But what is restorative justice? Restorative justice is a process whereby parties with a stake in a criminal offense (including the offender, the victim, and the communities of each) collectively resolve how to deal with the aftermath of the criminal act with an emphasis on repairing the harm from that act - the harm to the victim, to the community, and to the offender her/himself. Examples of restorative justice include FGCs, sentencing circles in North America, and victim-offender mediations in the United States, each of which are described below.

What is American About American Poetry?
Donald Justice
Are there essential ways in which you consider yourself an American poet? When you consider your own "tradition," do you think primarily of American poets? Do you believe there is anything specifically American about past and contemporary American poetry? Is there American poetry in the sense that there is said to be American painting or American film? Do you wish to distinguish American poetry from British or other English language poetry? Yes and yes and yes (Mainly because of subject matter) Not definitely. Not with the idea that only the Whitman/Williams line is American, that's propaganda. Which historic poets do you consider most responsible for generating distinctly American poetics? E. Dickinson, Emerson, Pound, H. Crane, etc. What import does regional poetry occupy in your sense of American poetry? When it's good, it counts. Otherwise, not. What significance does popular culture possess in your sense of American poetry? Very little in and of itself. Something has to be made of it.

Mrs. Snow
Busts of the great composers glimmered in niches,
Pale stars. Poor Mrs. Snow, who could forget her,
Calling the time out in that hushed falsetto?
(How early we begin to grasp what kitsch is!)
But when she loomed above us like an alp,
We little towns below would feel her shadow.
Somehow her nods of approval seemed to matter
More than the stray flakes drifting from her scalp.
Her etchings of ruins, her mass-production Mings
Were our first culture: she put us in awe of things. And once, with her help, I composed a waltz, Too innocent to be completely false She beamed and softened then. Ah, those were the days. First Death
by Donald Justice This is Michael Carey for Voices from the Prairie a weekly sampling from the rich soil of Iowa’s literary tradition. Today we hear from Donald Justice a Pulitzer Prize winning poet from Iowa City. We will be hearing the second and third parts of his three part poem entitled " First Death ." It has to do with the experience of his grandmother’s death when he was a child in Florida. Although Mr. Justice’s words here are somber and deeply moving, his touch with language is always light and full of music.
from First Death
June 13, 1933
The morning sun rose up and stuck.
Sunflower strove with hollyhock.
I ran the worn path past the sty.
The barn door creaked. I walked among
Chaff and wrinkled cakes of dung.
In the dim light I read the dates
On the dusty license plates Nailed to the wall as souvenirs. I breathed the dust in of the years. I circled the abandoned Ford Before I tried the running board. At the wheel I felt the heat Press upwards through the springless seat.
