A Poem by Donald Justice
By Robert Hass

September 20, 1998
M any readers wrote to express their interest in and ask questions about the poetic form called the villanelle, after I printed a couple of examples last month. So the haunted and magic quality of that kind of formal repetition in poems must have struck a chord. One reader suggested that I print a pantoum. The pantoum has a curious history. It's a Malay song form and it was adapted by French poets in the 19th century (one of the more obscure fruits of the Age of Imperialism) and came into English from poets who imitated the French. The pantoum has a four-line stanza; the second and fourth lines of each stanza become the first and third lines of the next stanza. Here's one by Donald Justice, who grew up in Florida and taught for many years at the Iowa Writers Workshop. The poems in his New and Selected Poems about Florida, the Miami of another era, and about growing up in the Depression years are especially memorable. Justice is widely admired and imitated by other poets; he's a brilliant craftsman who has experimented with a lot of forms, including the pantoum. Here's an American poet using a Malay-French-English form to get the feel of America in the 1930s.: Pantoum of the Great Depression

Unarchy,
and a varietie of divers thoughts...
from Donald's head.
IF YOU NEVER LOOK PAST THIS HOME PAGE, PLEASE READ AND THINK ON THIS: Proposal: Replace our current justice system, which is based on dishonesty and legalistic word games, with a new system based on common sense and conscience. For the time being, this new system is called unarchy There would be no written laws, just the understanding that you shouldn't mistreat others, or, put another way, don't do to others what you wouldn't want done to yourself. Juries would be selected completely randomly. Juries would be big enough to ensure that they accurately represent the views of society at large. There would be no judges or lawyers. Accuser and accused would present their own cases. No evidence would be inadmissable. Jurors may ask questions. Simple majority vote determines guilt. Simple majority vote sets the punishment. Thanks. Donald Sauter. What's new(est):
  • Election 2004 - how I would "discharge the duties as President of the United States."
  • Election 2000 - highlights of the discussion generated by my candidacy in 2000. Everything stands.

A Note on Donald Justice
Justice attended Allapattah Elementary School, Andrew Jackson High School and the Senior High School in Miami. Then, in the autumn of 1942, he enrolled for a BA in Music at the University of Miami, where he studied for a time with the composer Carl Ruggles. At a certain point, however, Justice decided that he might have more talent as a writer than a composer, and when he took his degree, in 1945, it was not in Music but English. Home What's New Catalogue Personnel ... Donald Justice in conversation with Philip Hoy To order online, please enable Javascript The Old Bachelor and Other Poems . But if the occasion was cause for celebration, it will have been overshadowed by the announcement that the university was letting all of its English instructors go. In the spring of 1954, just two years after his arrival, Justice obtained his PhD, and was promptly awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship in poetry, which made it possible for him to travel to Europe for the first time. After his return, he spent two years as an assistant professor, one at the University of Missouri at Columbia, the other at Hamline University, St Paul, Minnesota. Then, in 1957, he went back to the Iowa Writers' Workshop, where he had agreed to take over some of his teaching while Engle was away on leave. This was to have been a temporary appointment, but when Engle returned, he was asked to stay on, and he remained at the Workshop for over ten years.

Collected Poems
"Living Together"
from COLLECTED POEMS

Of you I have no memory, keep no promise.
But, as I read, drink, wait, and watch the surf,
Faithful, almost forgotton, your demand
Becomes all others, and this loneliness
The need that is your presence. In the dark,
Beneath the lamp, attentive, like a sound
I listen for, you draw near closer, surer
Than speech, or sight, or love, or love returned. Commentary by Donald Justice This dark little poem is about trying to come to terms with some hidden aspect of the self not wholly accessible to reason. The style has the beautiful stark dignity of many of Bowers's poems, but there is another side to his work which should be mentioned as wella kind of cheerful stoicism that stemmed from his enormous zest for life. But then Bowers is not the first poet to live brightly and write darkly.
