A review of A Donald Justice Reader (Middlebury College Press 1991) Dana Gioia has also co-edited an anthology of essays on the writings of Donald Justice entitled Certain Solitudes In 1975 I took a course at Harvard from Elizabeth Bishop. Her general popularity at that moment can be measured by the size of her class; enrollment totaled five students. Although Bishop had won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award, she was considered a "poet's poet," a writer treasured by fellow artists but not much noted by critics, and hardly known at all by the common reader. Today Bishop's reputation stands as high as that of any American poet of the last forty years. She is perhaps the only major poet of her generation on whom academic critics and non-specialists can enthusiastically agree. But back then a coterie sustained her modest

What the critics said
For years I have been puzzled that so little has been published about Donald Justice, who seems one of the few truly permanent poets currently writing in English. Now, in one masterful stroke, Philip Hoy covers the whole of the poet's life and career in this lively, intelligent, and refereshingly candid book-length conversation. This important new book goes a long way to securing Donald Justice's rightful place in contemporary letters. Dana Gioia John Ashbery Thom Gunn Donald Hall Michael Hamburger ... W.D.Snodgrass

Justice Donald King (retired) was perhaps the preeminent judge dealing with family law matters in the state of California. Given California's status as an innovative, leading-edge state in this field, this status makes Justice King perhaps the preeminent judge in the area of family law matters nationwide. Justice King served on the California Court of Appeal for 13 years, where he authored more family law opinions than any previous California Appellate Justice. Justice King has received many honors and awards over the years. Perhaps the greatest award of his career was given upon his retirement, when the California State Bar announced that its annual family law judicial award would be renamed the Justice Donald B. King Family Law Judicial Officer of the Year Award, in his honor.

Our governments measure our standard of living with the dollar numbers produced by the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Our federal government and churches set up Indian residential schools and destroyed children's lives, yet the establishment of these predatory schools increased the GDP and provided an addition to our standard of living. B.C.'s

Act
It is difficult to struggle against the demented mentality of our current leaders, and this struggle becomes more difficult as our justice system put money before people's lives. Take the case of the recent judgement provided by Chief Justice Donald Brenner of the B.C. Supreme Court between seven former students of an Indian residential school versus the government, the United Church and former dormitory supervisor Arthur Plint. In handing down the judgement, Justice Brenner took into consideration the B.C.'s Limitations Act and restricted his judgement to claims of sexual abuse for which there is no time limit. Arthur Plint was found guilty of pedophile acts, the government and church were ordered to pay a total of $410,000 to six victims while the claim of a seventh was rejected. Justice Brenner explained

The Virtue of Justice DONALD DEMARCO We usually think of justice in relation to our dealings with other people. Justice requires us to render each person his due. Most of us understand justice, therefore, as a personal or social virtue. Sir Walter Scott
You be the judge Our understanding not only of justice but also of virtue in general is greatly impaired when we mislabel vice as virtue, and virtue as vice. Calling fair foul, as Shakespeare suggests, is a devilish enterprise. If the word is wrong, then the thought is wrong. And if the thought is wrong, then the resulting action is wrong. The correct naming of things is indispensable to correct thinking and correct acting. Before justice exists in action, it must first exist in word and thought. Anne of Geierstein that eloquently and dramatically brings to light the insidious and unjust practice of calling vice virtue. In the story, the brave young Arthur is riding in the company of Thiebault. The latter, a grandson of troubadours and a lover of ballads, sings one with great artistry for his traveling companion. Finding the right words Nice guys finish last Not long ago a particularly hard-headed business woman graced the cover of Fortune Fortune magazine, you had better be tough.

Academic studies then followed at the University of British Columbia, where he obtain his undergraduate degree in 1967. During the summers he flew helicopters throughout western Canada in support of forest-fire operations and general charter work. During the summer of 1964, Don flew helicopters in Panama and Columbia on behalf of the Organization of American States, which was undertaking survey work for the completion of the Pan-American Highway. In his third year of undergraduate study, Don was hired as a pilot by Canadian Pacific Airlines and began his airline career as a first officer on the venerable DC-3. But soon after he decided to continue his academic career, and he began his legal studies at UBC during the fall of 1976. The next three years saw him changing hats between those of law student, airline pilot and husband.
