I. Joyce, James Augustine
(From the Online Biographical Encyclopedia A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
He grew up a rebel among rebels. Those movements, whether political or literary, which had as their objective the freeing of Ireland from English dominance, held very little attraction for him. His instinct was for a broader European culture, and to this an exceptional faculty for linguistic study gave him precocious access. Among companions who were picking up a little Gaelic and were enthusiastic for the theater of Yeats, Synge, and Lady Gregory, Joyce stdied Dano-Norwegian and opposed to the Celtic twilight the hard, clear illumination of Ibsen in his realistic phase.
In a city much given to artistic coteries he remained aloof and even arrogant. For a time he led, or claimed to lead, a life of more than common adolescent irregularity; his early fugitive productions were often improper or scandalous. A powerful and original intellect made him quickly intolerant of the narrow curriculum of his college and of the strict Roman Catholic orthodoxy by which it was controlled.

Welcome to 15 Usher's Island , The James Joyce House Of 'The Dead' Welcome to 15 Usher's Island the James Joyce house of 'The Dead' the world's premier literary address. Learn more about the amazing restoration of this Georgian building, our upcoming events and how to hire out 15 Usher's Island as a venue for your own event! 2004 is James Joyce's Bloomsday centenary year for both ‘The Dead’ and ‘Ulysses’ and there are events being arranged to commemorate this occasion around the globe. The House of 'The Dead' was officially opened on Tuesday the 6th of January, 2004 with the DINNER OF THE CENTURY the first on the calendar of centenary celebrations for ‘ReJoyce 2004’. The evening was a huge success and we wish to thank one and all for attending and supporting us through out our journey of the restoration project. To learn more about the evening please visit our Joycean Dinners page. About Us 'THE DEAD' AND 15 USHER'S ISLAND The short story 'The Dead' is the last in Joyce's book 'Dubliners'. This building is one of the world's premier literary addresses. 15 Usher's Island was the home of James Joyce's aunts, Mrs. Lyons and Mrs. Callanan and her daughter Mary Ellen. Members of the Joyce family, when they were old enough, celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany (January 6th) each year with a Christmas dinner at number 15. Joyce's father would carve the goose and make festive speeches just as Gabriel does in the story. Fond memories of parties in his aunts house stayed with him all of his life and proved to be the inspiration for the setting and many of his characters from his most critically acclaimed short story. Joyce describes one of the most memorable dinners in fiction along side a beautiful love story. It was most recently captured in John Huston's masterpiece The Dead staring Anjelica Huston and the late Donal McCann.

ABC's World News Tonight!

J ames Joyce's Ulysses has been hailed as a masterpiece since its publication in 1922. This tale of the adventures of advertising salesman Leopold Bloom on June 16, 1904, in Dublin is a remarkable conflation of mythology, symbolism, philosophy, social realism, and humanity. Bloom's relationships with wife Molly and surrogate son Stephan Dedalus reflect the simple decency of the common man. H owever, the common reader has been reluctant to face Joyce's great panorama. Laden with obscure references and dogged by an ever-growing body of secondary literature, the book's reputation as a "difficult" work has placed a barrier between the book and its potential audience. This is a shame, because Joyce was writing for a general readership, and his novel offers a remarkable experience even for the reader with no prior familiarity with Joyce's world. A n expatriate Irishman, James Joyce set his works in Dublin, but shunned the flourishing Irish literary revival. He wrote and worked intermittently as an English teacher, moving his family from Dublin to Austria to Italy to Switzerland. In 1906, as he finished Dubliners , he considered appending a short story "Ulysses" to the end of the work. Instead he embarked on a full length Ulysses in 1914, the year of the publication of Dubliners and the serialization of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man , his first literary successes. Ulysses would not be finished until October of 1921, and was ultimately published in 1922 by Sylvia Beach's Shakespeare and Company, center of Paris's flourishing literary scene. In the seven intervening years, a series of financial and legal struggles, perhaps even more than its own literary merits warranted, assured the apotheosis of Ulysses into the Western literary canon. A master work of modernist literature, Ulysses used the structure of the Homeric Odyssey as a contrast to the lives of the Dublin working class. The entire 732-page work takes place during Dublin's "dailiest day possible," Thursday, 16 June 1904. The bleak lives of the Dublin working class formed a stark contrast to the heroic Odyssey , and Joyce's frank realism was too avant-garde for the cultural police of the day. As Joyce began writing
