Author: Joyce, James
Date and Place of birth:
b. Feb. 2, 1882, Dublin, Ireland d. Jan. 13, 1941, Zürich, Switzerland Life and Works:
Irish novelist noted for his experimental use of language and exploration of new literary methods in such large works of fiction as Ulysses (1922) and Finnegans Wake Joyce entered University College, Dublin, which was then staffed by Jesuit priests. There he studied languages and reserved his energies for extracurricular activities, reading widelyparticularly in books not recommended by the Jesuitsand taking an active part in the college's Literary and Historical Society. Greatly admiring Henrik Ibsen, he learned Dano-Norwegian to read the original and had an article, "Ibsen's New Drama"a review of the play When We Dead Awakenpublished in the London Fortnightly Review in 1900 just after his 18th birthday. This early success confirmed Joyce in his resolution to become a writer and persuaded his family, friends, and teachers that the resolution was justified. In October 1901 he published an essay, "The Day of the Rabblement," attacking the Irish Literary Theatre (later the Dublin Abbey Theatre) for catering to popular taste. Joyce was leading a dissolute life at this time but worked sufficiently hard to pass his final examinations, matriculating with "second-class honours in Latin" and obtaining the degree of B.A. on Oct. 31, 1902. Never did he relax his efforts to master the art of writing. He wrote verses and experimented with short prose passages that he called "epiphanies," a word that Joyce used to describe his accounts of moments when the real truth about some person or object was revealed. To support himself while writing, he decided to become a doctor, but, after attending a few lectures in Dublin, he borrowed what money he could and went to Paris, where he abandoned the idea of medical studies, wrote some book reviews, and studied in the Sainte-Geneviève Library.

JAMES JOYCE
"I want to give a picture of Dublin so complete that if the city suddenly disappeared from the earth it could be reconstructed out of my book." Birthplace

Dublin, Ireland
Education
University College, Dublin
Other jobs
English teacher, bank clerk Did you know? Joyce established Dublin's first cinema, the Volta, in 1909. Critical verdict Joyce's genius was recognised with Portrait, Pound declaring that he "produces the nearest thing to Flaubertian prose that we now have in English", though the most prominent critical strain was disgust with what HG Wells called his "cloacal obsession". The publisher's reader agreed it was "formless, unrestrained, and ugly things, ugly words, are too prominent". By the time of writing Ulysses - which wasn't published in the UK until 1936 and had to be smuggled in in two volumes, so that Anthony Burgess read the second half first - Joyce had a raft of critical and practical support. The admiration wavered into incomprehension with Work in Progress, which became Finnegans Wake, but modernism rallied bravely to understand it. Since then, the expansion of academia and rise of literary theory has proved the master right in his grand declaration that the complexities of his work "would keep professors busy for centuries".

Various World Wide Web sites house many different kinds of information and also provide links to other sites; primary and secondary documents are deposited on the Web; a new electronic journal of Joyce scholarship and criticism has been established; and several Internet discussion lists are devoted to Joyce. This first installment of the column provides a guide to the resources by listing, locating, and briefly annotating them. Later installments will elaborate on particular issues, devote more space to specific sites, or discuss aspects of electronic Joyce beyond the Internet. A few preliminary comments:

Start your day with a thought-provoking quote from the world's greatest thinkers and writers. Sign up to The Daily Muse for free. James Joyce the most influential novelist of the 20th century
James Joyce was born in Dublin, and educated by Jesuits and at the Catholic University College, Dublin.
His early work showed a great gift for languages. He was a talented musician with a fine tenor voice, and in his writing fully explored the relationship between music and words.
He left Ireland permanently in 1912, despite the fact that he was a Irish nationalist.
Joyce's most famous work, Ulysses , was banned in Britain and America for obscenity. It is characterstic for its use of a variant of the interior monologue that became known as the 'stream of consciousness'. This technique has been very influential in the development of 20th century works in all genres. Using this technique, Joyce was able to explore in depth characters and their relationships.
The autobiographical A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was published before Ulysses . The last 17 years of his life were occupied writing Finnegans Wake , a vast dream novel.

James Joyce
The spirit of Ireland is embodied in young Stephen Dedalus, the central character of James Joyce's A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man . Like the Dedalus of Greek myth, Stephen must grow wings so that he may fly above the tribulations of his life. As he matures, Dedalus begins to understand his position in life, and decides to rise above the turbulent Ireland of the early 1900s in a rebellion again society, a struggle against his beliefs and a struggle against his heritage.
Joyce wrote A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in the decade preceding its first publication in 1916. The early 1900s was a turbulent time for Ireland, a time in which many groups and individuals were making pushes for an Independent Ireland. Joyce brings Irish politics in as a major theme for Stephen Dedalus to address. Stephen often Idolizes or admonishes different characters in Ireland's political landscape. Among these revolutionaries were the IRB (Irish Republican Brotherhood), Charles Steward Parnell, The revolutionaries of the 1916 Easter Rising and Sinn Fein.
