Josephus Flavius game
Josephus Flavius was a famous Jewish historian of the first century at the time of the Second Temple destruction. During the Jewish-Roman war he got trapped in a cave with a group of 40 soldiers surrounded by romans. The legend has it that preferring suicide to capture, the Jews decided to form a circle and, proceeding around it, to kill every third remaining person until no one was left. Josephus, not keen to die, quickly found the safe spot in the circle and thus stayed alive. The applet below generalizes that situation. The number of people is limited by 50, but "Every which" controls allow for variations on the original theme. A player selects a spot and presses one of the Fast or Slow buttons to observe the sequence in which people will die. The purpose of the game, of course, is to stay alive by choosing the right spot. The counting starts from the topmost position indicated by a short straight line segment.

A Man with No Self
Once I heard the channel thirty-nine lady say, What do you do when life becomes a nightmare? I was touched to the point of tears; I was pierced to the heart. She repeated it and said tune in tomorrow or was it next week. Anyway I didn't know where I would be tomorrow or next week so I didn't tune in and I didn't send for the tape. But at that moment I didn't need to hear any more. Just the question was enough. But our grown-up foster son, the outdoor hollerer, the midnight obscenity-screamer, who hears the voices of people whose bodies he can't see, can't be comforted. Yes, he has seen the channel thirty-nine lady, and he does listen, wondering if she could be sincere. But he doesn't hear anything that puts him in remembrance of his own wound, or his Master's wound. Anyway, he doesn't see how the wound of Another could have anything to do with him. Be that as it may, the whole story is bathed in hopelessness and anxiety, oh yes, and loneliness. Think of the irate neighbors. Do you know what people say when you ask for prayers for your mentally ill family member? Not much, because they can't think of any other answer than to get the problem out of your life, but you can't pray for someone to cease to exist. That's murder.

Josephus Background Flavius Josephus was a famous historian of the first century. Legend has it that Josephus wouldn't have lived to become famous without his mathematical talents. During the Jewish-Roman war, he was among a band of 41 Jewish rebels trapped in cave by the Romans. Preferring suicide to capture, the rebels decided to form a circle and, proceeding around it, to kill every third remaining person until no one was left. But Josephus, along with an unindicted co-conspirator, wanted none of this suicide nonsense; so he quickly calculated where he and his friend stand in the vicious circle. Flavius Josephus
Josephus was a priest, a soldier, and a scholar. He is famous for being the most credible secular historian to record the existence of Jesus Christ outside of the New Testament. He was born Joseph ben Mattathias in Jerusalem in 37 CE , a few years after the time of Jesus, during the time of the Roman occupation of the Jewish homeland. In his early twenties he was sent to Rome to negotiate the release of several priests held hostage by Emperor Nero. When he returned home after completing his mission he found the nation beginning a revolution against the Romans. Despite his foreboding that the cause was hopeless, he was drafted into becoming commander of the revolutionary forces in Galilee, where he spent more time controlling internal factions than fighting the Roman army. When the city of Jotapata he was defending fell to the Roman general Vespasian, Josephus and his supporters hid in a cave and entered into a suicide pact, which Josephus oddly survived.

    Did Josephus Refer to Jesus?
A Thorough Review of the Testimonium Flavianum
    By Christopher Price
The most important extra-biblical references to Jesus are found in the writings of Josephus. Although some have questioned the authenticity of the passages, modern scholarship has rightly recognized that one of them is completely authentic and the other, though embellished by Christian scribes, provides an authentic core of material confirming much about Jesus. This article thoroughly examines the authenticity of the disputed reference to Jesus, the Testimonium Flavianum referred to hereafter as the "TF".

Who Was Josephus? Josephus returned with Titus to Rome, where he was awarded for his service with a house and a pension. With time and resources, Josephus turned to writing of history. In the 70s, he wrote Jewish Wars , which provided a chronicle of the wars of the Jewish people. He thereafter in the 90s wrote a much broader history of the Jewish people

    Flavius Josephus.
Born in 37 AD to a priestly family, and raised in Jerusalem, Josephus first visited Rome in his early 20's as a political intermediary for the Jews; and when the Jewish revolt began he initially fought against the Romans. But, when captured by Vespasian, Josephus declared that Vespasian was destined to fulfil an ancient Jewish prophecy by becoming Emperor of Rome. When this actually happened, Vespasian gave Josephus his freedom and later adopted him, adding to him the family name of Flavius. Rejected as a traitor by his own people, he sought unsuccesfully to persuade the defenders of Jerusalem to surrender; and personally witnessed its fall. These experiences, together with his access to both Jewish and Roman sources were the basis for his two great works. 'The Jewish War', published about 78 AD, was a history of the revolt, and the 'Jewish Antiquities', a 20 volume history of the Jewish people, was published about 93 AD. Two other works by him also survive: 'Against Apion', a defence of Judaism against a Roman critic, and 'The Life', his autobiography, published in the early second century. It is not known exactly when he died. Josephus' work contains a number of references that provide corroboration for the historicity of the gospel records.

CONTAINING THE INTERVAL OF THREE THOUSAND EIGHT HUNDRED AND THIRTY-THREE YEARS. FROM THE CREATION TO THE DEATH OF ISAAC. CHAPTER 1. THE CONSTITUTION OF THE WORLD AND THE DISPOSITION OF THE ELEMENTS. 1. In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. But when the earth did not come into sight, but was covered with thick darkness, and a wind moved upon its surface, God commanded that there should be light: and when that was made, he considered the whole mass, and separated the light and the darkness; and the name he gave to one was Night, and the other he called Day: and he named the beginning of light, and the time of rest, The Evening and The Morning, and this was indeed the first day. But Moses said it was one day; the cause of which I am able to give even now; but because I have promised to give such reasons for all things in a treatise by itself, I shall put off its exposition till that time. After this, on the second day, he placed the heaven over the whole world, and separated it from the other parts, and he determined it should stand by itself. He also placed a crystalline [firmament] round it, and put it together in a manner agreeable to the earth, and fitted it for giving moisture and rain, and for affording the advantage of dews. On the third day he appointed the dry land to appear, with the sea itself round about it; and on the very same day he made the plants and the seeds to spring out of the earth. On the fourth day he adorned the heaven with the sun, the moon, and the other stars

It would be unwise to discuss Preterism without taking a good look at what happened during the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD. Preterism derives its teachings from two main sources, the Bible (comparing Revelation with other Scriptures to see what the symbols would have meant to 1st century Jews) and history (the writings of Jewish/Roman historian Flavius Josephus being prominent). Below you will find the symbols and ideas used in Revelation compared to their uses in other Scriptures, as well as their possible fulfillment in history at the fall of Jerusalem.

    Synopsis
The writings of the Jewish historian Josephus are invaluable as a primary source of New Testament background material. Without them it would be all but impossible to verify or in some cases even to understand some of the historical references in the Gospels and in the book of Acts.[ ] Born a priest of royal (Hasmonean) descent,[ ] he was captured by the Roman army in Galilee in AD 67, were he was leading the Jewish revolt against them. Later, writing with the sponsorship of the Roman Emperor Vespasian,[ ] he appears to have had two main purposes. These were to demonstrate both the veracity of the Jewish religion and to promote his thesis that the Romans were God's instruments in punishing Israel for her departure from the observance of the Law. Not surprisingly Josephus was regarded as a traitor by his own people.[ In the past the works of Josephus have suffered widespread misunderstanding and misuse.[
