Classroom Issues and Strategies
Students of the 1960s and early 1970s (as well as today's college-age youth) thought about and acted on nonfamilial kinships, that is, relationships between individuals having agency ; groups, personhood in the community, space or turflocal/national/global; responsibilityprivate and corporate; power/powerlessness; most of the "-isms" and phobias of historical and contemporary societies worldwide. These are some of the recurring subjects in Jordan's three poems included in The Heath Anthology Moreover, hearing Jordan is crucial to appreciating and understanding the power of her poetry. Beyond urging my students to read all poetry aloud (and we read aloud in class), I stress the rich orality of poetic expression by many African-Americans (from Dunbar to Hughes and Brown , from Hayden and Walker and Brooks to Evans and Sanchez and Cortez, as well as Lorde Knight Reed Clifton , and Harper ), among whom Jordan is outstanding for the "being-spoken-now" qualities of her poems. Two of the "talking passages" (describing aptly the entire 114 lines) in "Poem about My Rights" are its opening and lines 45 to 49. Reading this poem aloud in a class need not be difficult in any college for at least two reasons: its personal, intimate, talking-directly-to-you quality and the generally acknowledged present-day awareness of the twenty-five percent probability that rape might become real to any woman in the U.S. Single voices (including those of male students) reading the poem in sequence diminish possible embarrassment over the sustained and repeated use of the words "rape," "penetrate," and "ejaculate" as reality and as metaphor. The poem's insistence upon the

Archives Statement by the Quartet, Dead Sea (Jordan) - June 22, 2003 Representatives of the Quartet – United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan, Russian Foreign Minister Igor Ivanov, Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou, U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, High Representative for European Common Foreign and Security Policy Javier Solana, and European Commissioner for External Affairs Chris Patten - met today at the Dead Sea in Jordan.
The Quartet members reviewed developments since their last meeting in Washington, on December 20, 2002. They welcome the appointment of Palestinian Prime Minister Abbas and the strong start he and his government have made in difficult circumstances, and the acceptance by Israeli and Palestinian authorities of the roadmap presented to the parties on April 30, 2003, leading to realization of the goal expressed by President Bush and shared by the Quartet members, of two states - Israel and Palestine - living side by side in peace and security, in 2005. They strongly endorse the results of the Red Sea Summit meetings, and pledge to support actively Prime Minister Abbas and Prime Minister Sharon in carrying out the commitments made at these meetings.
The Quartet welcomes the discussions between Israel and Palestinian authorities over transfer of security responsibility in Gaza and Bethlehem. They call on both sides to reach agreement as soon as possible on workable arrangements and timetables for implementation.

WASHINGTON (AllPolitics, June 9) Vernon Jordan testified Tuesday for a fifth, and likely final, time before Independent Counsel Ken Starr's grand jury investigating the sex-and-perjury allegations against President Bill Clinton. Jordan, a confidant and golfing partner of the president, spent half the day before the panel. Emerging from the courthouse shortly before 1 p.m. EDT, Jordan said he had been assured by Starr prosecutors that "barring unforseen circumstances," this would be his last appearance.

"And I got to thinking about the moral meaning of memory… [A]nd what it means to forget, what it means to fail to find and preserve the connections with the dead whose lives you, or I, want or need to honor with our own."
New this month: Some of Us Did Not Die: Selected Essays of June Jordan . (Click to purchase.) Diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992, Jordan was given a 40% prognosis of surviving more than five years but she lived for more than a decade. While she had been a tireless advocate for the voiceless, the nameless, the faceless, and the despised for more than 30 years, she also, with her diagnosis, became an advocate for other women afflicted with the disease. The author of 28 books of poetry, fiction, and social criticism, Jordan was one of the most prolific intellectuals of her generation. But I am sure there are many, of all races, who perused newspaper accounts of her death, with no knowledge of who this woman was… is. In a society that believes that inane dictums embraced by American youth like "Be Like Mike" or "I Am Tiger Woods" are evidence of a color-blind, classless, genderless, and discrimination-free America, June Jordan worked as an activist tirelessly in the very trenches that Nike, Gatorade, McDonalds, Viacom and two national political parties claim in the name of commercial products and pop slogans. We are unlikely to hear any slogans in mainstream media… ever… that proclaim we should "Be Like June."

90. June Jordan Introduction
The effect of reading june jordan s work is that it makes a reader less capable of passing by, less susceptible to coercion. june jordan is insistent.
http://www.diacenter.org/prg/poetry/96_97/intrjordan.html
Introduction by Brighde Mullins A poet who desires a larger than personal narrative and who commits to a vision that is responsive to the very world that we live in is one that is truly taking risks. The effect of reading June Jordan's work is that it makes a reader less capable of passing by, less susceptible to coercion. June Jordan is insistent. PAY ATTENTION, she says. DID YOUR TEACHERS EVER TELL YOU? she asks. CAN YOU SAY IT? She prompts. She sifts through the detritus of the daily injustices and horrors and she iterates and re-iterates that language is a site for revelation, that poetry is a site for imagined changes to begin. June Jordan has re-vitalized the task of the poet. POET not as autonomous ego, but as shaper of meanings, as active participant. The description of the shaman, the proto-poet, is "The one whose eyes are open." (I'm) "a female member of an endangered species, I am searching for relevant proof." she says. In her essays, her plays, her poems, she requires that we look at ourselves. In her collection, entitled Haruko/Love Poems , she gathers love poems, new and selected, twenty-two years worth.

June Jordan Quotes I am a feminist, and what that means to me is much the same as the meaning of the fact that I am Black: it means that I must undertake to love myself and to respect myself as though my very life depends upon self-love and self-respect.
June Jordan

If any of us hopes to survive, s/he must meet the extremity of the American female condition with immediate and political response. The thoroughly destructive and indefensible subjugation of the majority of Americans cannot continue except at the peril of the entire body politic.
June Jordan

The purpose of polite behavior is never virtuous. Deceit, surrender, and concealment: these are not virtues. The goal of the mannerly is comfort, per se.

Body and soul, Black America reveals the extreme questions of contemporary life, questions of freedom and identity: How can I be who I am? Americans have begun to understand that trouble does not start somewhere on the other side of town. It seems to originate inside the absolute middle of the homemade cherry pie. As a poet and writer, I deeply love and I deeply hate words. I love the infinite evidence and change and requirements and possibilities of language. As I am a poet I express what I believe, and I fight against whatever I oppose, in poetry.
